family in Sungai Petani too poor until eat soil!

I was shocked to read this in the Star today. While people may question the parents (and rightly so), what about the social welfare nets that failed to catch this family?

This family has five children, the last just born 10 days ago. The father not working (reason not given, but pick your choice from: illiteracy, attitude, health problem (including alcoholism), social stigma (ex-convict perhaps?), physical disability). Why end up in this situation? Both self-help and external-help not available?

Why low income families seem to have more than the average number of children? I think there have been some research on this already.

Would the parents be charged for negligence?

The neighbors probably did what they could by giving food and stuff.

Just imagine the fate of the 10 day old baby or the education of the other four children.

Four siblings who allegedly ate soil for a week to stave off hunger are undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of a hospital here.

They had vomited and complained of stomach pain earlier.

The girls, aged seven, eight, nine and 10, were taken to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital after one of them revealed their condition to Jerai MIC chairman R. Supra maniam last Friday.

The matter came to light when the eldest girl was taken by her 70-year-old grandfather to a medical camp organised by the division at Kampung Padang Lembu, some 20km from here.

The girl suddenly vomited when the doctor was about to examine her.

Supramaniam said he was about to send the girl to the hospital when she told him her three younger sisters at home were also in pain.

“She told me that they had eaten soil as they were very hungry and there was not enough food for them,” he added.

Supramaniam said he visited their house and found the girls groaning in pain.

“They were weak and could barely move,” he added.

The children’s mother, who had just given birth 10 days ago, and their father were at home then.

Supramaniam said he then took the children to the hospital and they were admitted to the intensive care unit.

“I was told by a doctor who examined them that the children must undergo blood transfusion since they had eaten soil for a week.

“The girls are in stable condition but have to be warded for a week,” he said.

It is learnt that their father, who is in his 30s, was unemployed and the family relied on food donated by neighbours.

However, the amount of food was insufficient to feed the family.

Supramaniam said he would monitor the health condition of the children and assist the family.

Does the news below sound right to you? To me, it looks a stop-gap measure to hide some deeper issues. Already two years, don’t tell me now only want to “provide” funds? Can the authorities provide a list of funds or assistance provided so far? Maybe publish in their website or hand out to the media.

The Kedah government will provide funds for Tamil schools, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said yesterday.

He said the allocation would be according to the enrolment and infrastructure needed.

Azizan spoke to reporters after a meeting the chairmen of 58 parent-teacher associations of Tamil schools in the state.

The meeting was chaired by the state Domestic Trade and Consumerism, Siamese and Indian Affairs, Unity and Plantation Workers Committee chairman S. Manikumar at Wisma Darulaman here.

The Mentri Besar said requests for small amounts of aid would be handled immediately while those for large amounts would be included in the next Budget. – Bernama

One wonders if the enrollment is low because the schools can’t accommodate more students or if there’s any logistics reasons for asking for another school. How near are the three schools to the writer’s place? Anyone from Sg Lalang can clarify?

Thaipusam starts early but still no holiday in Kedah

As the crowd grows bigger every year (and not to mention the negative elements which tend to create chaos and anger among devotees), Thaipusam at Batu Caves sees devotees fulfilling their vows as early as a week before. With the coming Thaipusam falling on a weekend and part of a 3 days holiday in the Federal Territory, one can expect more tourists, and curious onlookers in addition to more crowd from outstation.

Thaipusam may be a week away but there are already devotees making their way up the 272 steps in Batu Caves here to pray and give thanks to Lord Muruga to avoid the crowd on the day of the festival.

Businessman K. Karthigan said his wife and him shaved their heads to give thanks to Lord Muruga for blessing them with a baby boy.

“My wife and I had been trying for a son but my wife had some gynaecological problems.

“However, after praying, her condition got better and was able to bear our son, who is now four months old,” said the 35-year-old when met at the Sri Subramaniam Swamy Temple in Batu Caves on Saturday.

“We came to perform our prayers earlier so that my wife and son would not have to join the Thaipusam crowd,” he added. Karthigan lives in Seremban.

Retiree R. Pathmavathi, 71, who was carrying a pal kodam (milk pot kavadi), said her family and her decided to come early to the temple because she had a difficult experience previously on Thaipusam Day.

“I could not even go beyond the foot of the Batu Caves steps. There were so many people. As we get older, we want to avoid such crowds,” said the grandmother of two.

Indian tourist K. Shrawan, 50, said the majestic Lord Muruga statue at the foot of the caves reminded him of the 17m-tall Sravana Belgola statue at a Jain temple in his country.

“I find Batu Caves very nice and peaceful. We don’t normally see limestone caves back in India,” said the banker, adding that in India Thaipusam was also celebrated on a grand scale.

Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam chairman Datuk R. Nadarajah said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein would attend this year’s celebration on Jan 30.

“We are expecting about 1.5 million people. During the PM’s visit, we will urge him to make Thaipusam a national holiday.

“Then, all Malaysians can participate,” he told reporters yesterday.

The Thaipusam celebrations will kick off with the Holy Silver Chariot procession that leaves the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee early in the night of Jan 29.

It is expected to reach the Batu Caves temple at 11am, followed by a flag-raising ceremony at 4pm to mark the official commencement of the festival.

KTM commuter train service will be available at the Batu Caves station on Thaipusam Day.

Yeah, there are calls every year to make more states declare Thaipusam as a public holiday. I especially wonder what is happening in Kedah. Its the second year running under the PAS government and the promise of public holiday is for Thaipusam still remain unfulfilled. I hope the makkal there will start to pressure their state representatives.
