Tamil programmes in RTM2

After MIC raised the purported ban of foreign Tamil dramas on RTM2, RTM clarified that no such ban exists. While I disagree with the issue raised by MIC in the cabinet nonetheless, I am interested in the amount of airtime mentioned by RTM. Its reported that the Tamil  (not Indian?) programmes constitute 8.63% or 14.5 hours per week. After checking RTM2‘s weekly schedule, I discovered the following:

Tamil News – 30 mins x 7 = 3.5 hours

Tamil Movie – 2.5 hours x 2 = 5 hours (but i think one of the slot alternates with other languages)

Tamil Drama – 30 mins x 5 = 2.5 hours

Karuthu Kalam Forum – 60 mins x 2 = 2 hours

Musical shows = 3.5 hours

Islamic talk = 0.5 hours

Total is 17 hours, so I’ll count the movie slot as one only to make it 14.5 hours.

News and musicals each take up 24.13%, movie and drama slots each take up 17.24%, forum is 13.79% and the balance 1.7% is the Islamic talk. The drama is aired at 1.30am on weekdays, while one of the tamil movies is on Sunday late night (Monday early morning). Thus 34.48% of the airtime is after midnight!

News is at prime time (8.30pm) and the other programmes are between 6 and 7pm. » Read more: Tamil programmes in RTM2

IT experts to help MIC counter online allegations

Good move by MIC. Better leave things to the experts. This is a better idea than getting all the division/branch heads to blog!

Again, its not only the media but the content also. The experts must be given correct information so that they can reply accurately. They should also have some level of freedom in order to make decisions and write-ups. Best if these experts sit down and go through MIC documentation, newspaper archives, blogs, and generally understand the Indian community socio-polito-economical issues.

So, I guess can see more comments in my blog soon 🙂 The more the merrier.

KUALA LUMPUR: The MIC has hired two information technology (IT) specialists to rebut allegations against the party on the Internet.

“We would make sure that the allegations are replied to within 24 hours,” president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said here at the 62nd Selangor MIC delegates conference here on Saturday.

The IT experts would also attend to the complaints through the party’s call centre. The centre, currently under renovation at its headquarters, is expected to be operational next month.

“They would also refer the problems to the respective MIC leaders who would raise them with the relevant government agencies if required,” he said.

PKR newsletter named Makkal Sakthi

Alamak! Would Hindraf allow this? Makkal Sakthi is a common word, no one copyrighted it yet, so technically PKR can call their newsletter as such. However, if HINDRAF is to remain apolitical and as a pressure group and still be associated with the term “Makkal Sakthi”, then HINDRAF must ask PKR to not use the term for their newsletter. They must not be seen swaying too much to any one side, even though currently they are supportive of Pakatan side due to their similar causes.

KUALA LUMPUR: “Makkal Sakthi”, previously the rallying cry for the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), is now the name for the Tamil edition of Suara Keadilan, Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s newsletter.
The first issue hit newsstands yesterday and the copies were quickly snapped up by members of the Indian community.PKR information chief Tian Chua said yesterday that despite the “rebellious” title, the weekly newsletter is printed with permission from the Home Ministry.

It was interesting to read the reports on March trade surplus. The Star projected a positive vibe, stating the surplus was higher if compared to corresponding month in 2007. However, MK put a negative note on the numbers, stating that the trade surplus is on the decline if compared to January and February 2008 values, and that imports grew 14.8% if compared to February. It did mention that exports grew 9.5% compared to February 2008, so that’s a bit of good news. » Read more: numbers talk

After making a mess of denying the renewal of Makkal Osai’s publishing permit, Home Minister providers more comedy time for us.

I can only shake my head in amazement at the attempts these guys make!

In Putrajaya, Syed Hamid explained that the ministry had not cancelled Makkal Osai’s permit but merely delayed the approval for renewing its publishing licence. He said the newspaper’s permit had expired and its management had applied for renewal.

“(In the appeal letter) they said they needed to publish the newspaper and that they were supporting many people.

“They pledged to abide by the guidelines and contribute to nation-building efforts. I think their request was reasonable, so I approved it,” he told reporters yesterday.
