The issues are:

–  no announcement in Tamil at international airports around the country.

– television news readers had failed to promote Indian culture through their dressing

– deejays on radio channels, especially Thr. Raaga, were not fluent in Tamil

In response, Dr S Subra said at the Tamil Bell function:

… agreed to bring the matter up to the Government, said television and radio channels should use proper Tamil in their programmes.

He said the influence of Western media and culture among the community’s youths had resulted in the lack of support for the community’s own religious and cultural programmes, adding that Indian organisations should act to preserve the Tamil language.

Subramaniam, who is also MIC secretary-general, said the party had urged the Government to include religious studies as a subject in Tamil schools as a way of inculcating moral values in Indian schoolchildren.

Yawn.

Everywhere is 1Malaysia…

Frankly speaking, I’m getting overloaded with the favorite catch-all phrase of the moment.

1Malaysia.

Hope I don’t go crazy.

Every leader/politician/official/tom-dick-harry worth his salt mentions it in the speech, or writes about it. Its being bandied about like a magic cure for all the problems in the country. Soon, even AH1N1 will be linked to it. Won’t surprise me.

Whatever happened to Wawasan 2020? Islam Hadhari? Not a single mention in papers since April.

Pusing – pusing, its the same thing only, just use different words to explain. Why not just use the 64 nilai murni learnt in Moral? 🙂 Much easier. More than 40 percent of the youths know them by heart since study for Moral.

Just call it Moral. That’s why school teacher says. Can’t be wrong there, can they?

1Malaysia is in danger of being used for the wrong reasons.

Kannadi Thundughal on adultery

Yesterday’s edition of Kannadi Thundukal talked about adultery and marital problems. The story started with a lady, Mrs A,  telling how her husband, Mr B, was fooling around with the Indonesian maid. The couple was doing catering business, and employed few Indonesians. The incident was witnessed by the lady’s teenage daughter who complained to her.  One day,  Mrs A caught them both red-handed. The husband left the house. It did not end there. The husband then hooked up with the lady’s brother’s wife!!! The lady’s brother (C) was ill and wheel-chair bound. The brother had 5 kids with wife (D), and yet the wife hooked up with Mr B who is relationship-wise is of brother status to her.

The lady mentioned how heartbroken her brother was until he even try commit suicide. The episode then aired interview with a guy (not sure from where) who talked about couples needing to understand each other. He said the blame could also be on the wife side for failing to understand psychical needs of the husband or maybe the husband is oversexed. He advised couples to seek counseling or medical attention in cases like this.

Imagine now, the impact on the children. What the teenage girl saw will forever scar her life – father in bed with another woman. Imagine the social stigma the family will carry. How in future, will the lady get her kids married off easily?

The story yesterday reminded me of someone I’ve known for the past one year or so. He is actually involved in one of the initiatives that I’m involved as well. I found out last week that the person has left his wife and kids, and now going around with another lady.  Due to work reasons, the person was always on the move, while the family was located in another state. Thus he did not have much quality time with family for last few years. And now, he seems to have dumped the family for a foreign lady. It is sad to hear that while we are fighting for our community’s well being, we have such “educated” people creating bad name for us.  Another broken family. Another single parent in the making. More headache for NGOs and community.

For me, if the marriage is not working out, seek help/advise and if really cannot work together, opt for legal separation. Ensure welfare of spouse and children is settled, and then you can romp around with whoever or whatever you want. Don’t leave things in limbo and create problem for others.

Then said : this kind of people should be shot to death.

MIC launches new portal…finally!

It was with great anticipation that I surfed to www.mic.org.my to view MIC’s new website (it was first mentioned last year April). Well, at first look, its not great. But for me function is more important than form and I lowered my expectation. It has a poll sections, blog section, video and photo gallery. I’ll say its still work in progress, maybe 50% complete.

mic-portal

By the way, first time I browsed the URL, there was an error, but it disappeared when I refreshed the page.

The new portal was launched by Information Minister Rais Yatim.

Samy has high hopes for the portal:

Meanwhile MIC president S Samy Vellu stressed that the content of the website must be made most attractive to the younger generation.

“The most important and challenging aspect of the MIC portal is the content. It must be constantly updated with real-time news so that the portal will capture the minds of the people, especially the youths.

“The MIC portal will now be the centre of information for the Indian community to attain the latest and accurate information on MIC,” he said.

Samy Vellu, who has come under attacks by many after the party suffered a devastating loss in the general election last year, lashed back at his critics that the website will regain MIC’s glory.

“The community can now interact and communicate with MIC officers any time and anywhere in real time. We want to hear from the community, we want them to tell us what they want and how we could assist them.

“When we do mistakes, we want the community to let us know, to advise us and make recommendations,” he said.

“This is the kind of relationship we want to have with the community… even before this, the MIC was able to read the pulse of the Indian community but perhaps there existed a gap, and this led to many Indians, especially the younger generation keeping away from the Barisan Nasional.

However he said tha this gap could be bridged with the launch of the portal.

If indeed the portal is able to be a focal point – an OSC – for the community, it will be great. For that, it must look something like www.gov.my, but at the the moment, the site needs a lot of rework. Also, there’s a problem of coordinating information from various sources. It requires huge resource. Not many Indian-based websites are able to arrange such information and cater for the community.

For example, if you browse the Education section under Opportunities menu, you will find Scholarship by MARA, (!) plus few other entries that have expired.  Its not easy to run a portal. Definitely need at least 3 full time staff – one designer, one content manager, and one programmer/developer.

Anyway, the portal has a e-community and e-feedback function whereby makkal can write in their problems/complaints etc. I think  one should give it a try and see if its effective or not before passing judgement. I know I will be trying it soon.

Oh ya…forget to add, I was being quite lenient and generous when evaluating the website. I can already hear it coming – WHAT??? No Facebook? No Twitter? No Youtube? Want to attract younger generation??? No RSS also??? Want to attract Internet savvy generation? Who are they trying to kid?

Kannadi Thundukal

I’ve been listening to Minnal FM’s programme called “Kannadi Thundukal” (Pieces of Glass) – hopefully I got the name correct. It airs on Thursday nights at 10.30pm.

So far I heard three episodes already. The most striking one was the one on the gum-sniffing guy. The fella talked about how he fell into the addiction and what it did to him. Very touching story.

The second episode was on ignorance of families who do not take effort to apply for identity cards. One guy said he lost his IC, couldn’t afford to pay the fine because he was so poor. So until now, no sort of identification on him. A guest lawyer also commented on public giving donation to poor families, until the families need not take effort to come out of their problem. He termed it as lifestyle disease. I kind of disagree with the generalisation made by the lawyer but he did mention that we have to investigate the root cause of the problem faced by the families instead of just giving groceries or cash aid.  I agree on that point. We have to ensure the aid given is properly spent. For most cases, we will directly pay the rent or school fees on behalf of the parents, so that there’s no possibility of money being misused.

Yesterday, I heard a case of a youth who turned into gangsterism/rowdyism due to influence of his father. Luckily, after marriage and being guided by MCPF people, he managed to turn a new leaf.

By the way, Minnal FM is on Facebook, so says the Djs in the morning show, Kalai Kathir. Anyone joined their group?
