MMSP still making news

…but for the wrong reasons. now there’s a row over the president’s post after one group held an AGM.  I think ROS has to step in and settle this before this guys make a fool out of themselves and also spoil Hindraf and community name.

The results:

…Vaneson Micheal became the deputy president while Dr M. Thuraichelvan, M. Ganesan and S. Sanjeyiramah were voted in as vice-presidents.

R. Sathiaseelan, S. Krishnan, N. Ramu and C. Sathiavathy were elected as secretary-general, treasurer, Youth chief and Wanita chief respectively.

Kannan said the party decided to hold the elections after 14 of its 27 central committee members quit.

He dismissed claims by sacked president R.S. Thanenthiran that the EGM did not have the mandate of the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

“We notified the ROS three weeks ago. They would have stopped us if we are not supposed to hold the elections,” he said yesterday.

…Kannan claimed that 14 CC members had passed a no-confidence vote against Thanenthiran.

“The reason is that he had tarnished the image of the party by locking the office and giving statements against the party’s objectives and for not being transparent about the accounts of the party’s launch (on Oct 10, 2009),” he said.

He said the other 13 CC members were stripped of their posts for failing to attend three consecutive CC meetings without reason.

Kannan Ramasamy (the previous Secretary General) was  elected as the new president on Saturday based on the AGM held:

Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party (MMSP) secretary-general Kannan Ramasamy was elected the new party president today amid disputes over the validity of the Indian party’s AGM.

Kannan, who was party secretary-general till today’s AGM, won the presidency unopposed amid cheers from the 250-odd party delegates.

Kannan’s appointment as the new leader of the troubled party will not sit well with embattled former president R.S. Thanenthiran (picture), who claimed that the AGM was unlawful and had not been given the go-ahead by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

Thanenthiran had on Thursday claimed to have contacted the RoS who had informed him that it had not “issued any letter or endorsement for the September 25 AGM or EGM.”

He had also said that he would lodge a police report over the AGM.

However, Kannan insisted today that the scheduled AGM was legitimate, saying that he had personally obtained permission from the RoS to go ahead with meeting.

“Is Thanenthiran now speaking on the behalf of RoS? I spoke to the RoS yesterday, they told me to continue with the AGM and EGM according to the party’s by-laws. They (RoS) had said that they would not be making any statements yet regarding today’s AGM. The RoS will only recognise the latest developments after we deliver the reports of today’s AGM to them,” Kannan told reporters today.

He accused Thanenthiran of lying concerning Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor’s attendance at the AGM.

Thanenthiran had said that Tengku Adnan had informed him that he had not received any invitation to the party’s AGM, and would not be attending.

“What Thanenthiran is saying is b******t. Tengku Adnan replied two days ago, saying that he could attend today’s AGM.

“I went to Tengku’s open house in Putrajaya yesterday and had a discussion with him on the party’s situation… Tengku told me he was disappointed with how Thanenthiran had misquoted him,” claimed Kannan.

The newly-minted party president likened Makkal Sakti’s situation to BN component party MCA’s own internal feud between former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and current president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

“What we are adopting now is the same resolution taken by MCA during its party crisis… There were two teams in MCA, so they had fresh elections to solve the issue,” said Kannan.

He also accused Thanenthiran of collecting funds under the “guise” of Makkal Sakti but kept all the money to himself.

“Thanenthiran keeps on collecting funds under his name using the banner of Makkal Sakti. We will be lodging a police report against him very soon,” added Kannan.

The MMSP has been rocked by internal conflict since the end of last year — with one faction aligned to Thanenthiran and the other to deputy president A. Vathemurthy expelling each of the leaders and taking their woes to the RoS.

The party was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on October 10 last year and is seen as a catalyst to regain declining grassroots Indian support for the ruling coalition.

This is what Thanenthiran said:

Thanenthiran insisted today that he was still the party’s rightful president, refusing to recognise Makkal Sakti’s AGM today which saw Kannan elected unopposed as the new party president.

“As far as the party is concerned, and as far as I am concerned, I am still Makkal Sakti president. I was legally elected while Kannan is a sacked member, I had sacked him so he is not even a member, how can he be president?” said Thanenthiran.

He accused Kannan of being a “power-hungry liar”, saying that today’s AGM showed Kannan’s true motives.

“He is showing that he is hungry for power, having an unlawful AGM to elect him as president… the people who are there are not even party members, they have not even paid their subscription fees.

“My party members know who the real president is, I have informed them and they know that today’s AGM is illegal,” Thanenthiran told The Malaysian Insider.

He said he would go ahead and conduct Makkal Sakti’s “real AGM” on October 10.

“I will go ahead and conduct my AGM, the proper lawful AGM. My members, those who have paid the subscription fees will attend the proper AGM and elect its members in a way that is recognised legitimately.

“He has gone ahead and had his little AGM, the joker, no one will recognise it,” said the embattled “former” president.

…Ironically Thanenthiran alleged that Kannan’s response earlier this afternoon was a blatant lie, and that Thanenthiran had himself met Tengku Adnan last night at the same function.

“I do know what he is saying. I was at Tengku Adnan’s open house last night and he didn’t say that to me. Tengku Adnan should clarify this then,” said Thanenthiran.

Promise to build Tamil School in Serendah

Which school will be relocated here?  Obviously not a NEW tamil school because its government policy not to built new schools. What a pity because foreigners can set up private schools and international schools here but own rakyat can’t get permit to open new Tamil school. Some quarters will say this: Nope, this is not proof of discrimination. The Indian community must be grateful for whatever reasons. Yeah, we can hear it coming…

Can the school be up by GE13?

Malaysia Makkal Sakthi Party hopes that the Federal Government will deliver its promises to the Hulu Selangor voters by building a Tamil primary school in Serandah.

MMSP president R.S. Than-enthiran said many Indian students in the area now had to travel far to get to the nearest Tamil school in Rawang.

“The school is urgently needed in the area and I hope it will be built as soon as possible, preferably in the next two years,” he said yesterday.

For Sunday’s by-election, Thanenthiran said he had mobilised about 800 MMSP members from Selangor to campaign.

“They did this over a period of 10 days prior to the event.”

He said he was also grateful to the Indians for coming out in full force to cast their votes.

“I believe Barisan Nasional’s victory is due to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s presence there,” he said.

Thanenthiran said it was now important for Barisan to fulfill its election promises fast as the general election was around the corner.

Masing Masing Sack Party

I guess you know what I’m taking about 🙂

Latest news says there’s two presidents (but I think its three actually, including Thanenthiran, since ROS haven’t replied):

The crisis-ridden Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party (MMSP) is set to have two presidents by this weekend.

The 14 central committee (CC) members, who sacked the party founding-president RS as a member on Jan 17, will appoint a stand-in president during a scheduled CC meeting in Shah Alam on Sunday Feb 7.

Two names have been submitted so far by the two factions within the party.

The pro-Thanenthiran faction are championing Klang-based businessman ‘Ohms’ P Thiagarajan – a close friend of former MIC deputy president S Subramaniam.

However, the anti-Thanenthiran faction is proposing another name as well – R Kenghadaran, a former detainee under the Internal Security Act.

Rival faction leader and MMSP secretary-general R Kannan said both names would be tabled for the perusal of the 14-member CC.

Once a ‘new president’ was appointed, an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) would be held to legitimately select a new president.

Until the EGM happens, the MMSP would have two presidents next week – one heading each faction. The result will be Malaysia’s latest Indian-based party having two parties, two constitutions, two presidents and two CCs.

Thanenthiran (right), on the other hand, has already sacked the 14 ‘troublemakers’ from MMSP, staking his claim to being ultimate party president.

MMSP was launched by Barisan Nasional chairperson and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak last October as a breakaway group from Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) and intended to help Najib and his Umno-dominated federal government to regain lost Indian electoral ground.

However, as predicted by political pundits then and now, MMSP had split and was believed to be nearing a natural demise.

Both factions have now referred their cases to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to decide the legitimate inheritor of MMSP – meaning Najib is set to have the final say on the fate of MMSP.

I lost count of who sacked who, and who appointed who. Go ahead and read the articles below, and hopefully someone can enlighten us poor folks.

MMSP faces crisis

Looks like Malaysian Makkal Sakthi Party is facing its first internal crisis, barely 3 months after its launching by PM Najib.  Similar to MIC, MCA, PPP, and IPF, the issue is related to the top leadership. The other leaders are claiming that he’s high-handed, dictatorial, and so on. Demand is there for him to resign. Well, it may be the end of MMSP which tried to ride on Hindraf and Makkal Sakthi tags.

I guess MMSP has served its purpose to jolt MIC into some sort of action.

Launched just two months ago by Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the Makkal Sakti party, one of a host of disparate political parties formed from what remained of the Hindraf movement, is now in turmoil with a majority of its leaders calling for its president R S Thanenthiran to quit with immediate effect.

The group of dissidents, led by deputy president A Vathemurthy is claiming the backing of more than 15 out of the 27 central committee members.

“We want Thanenthiran to relinquish the presidency. A motion to remove him was supposed to have been discussed today but the central committee meeting was cancelled at the last minute,” said Vathemurthy at a press conference here.

The central committee was supposed to meet tonight, but party secretary-general R Kannan issued a notice to cancel the meeting today.

The newly formed Makkal Sakti Party, which Prime Minister Najib is hoping will help him win over the Tamil working class, appears now to be in a major split over what some senior party leaders say is “the Samy Vellu-style, dictatorial” tendencies of president Thanenthiran.

The rebels have accused Thanenthiran of high-handedness and failing to share decision making with other senior leaders.

The senior leaders had requested an emergency general meeting for today.

The party, which was formed in May this year, launched by Najib on Oct 10 and largely considered as an alternative political party to the Indian community. MIC had expressed its objection, saying that the formation of Makkal Sakti would split the Indian community further.

Vathemurthy said that majority of CC members and ordinary members have absolutely no confidence in the leadership of Thanenthiran “ … and think that his continued presence as president is a severe threat to the stability, progress and future of our newly-formed Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party and the larger interest of Malaysian Indians.”

About 12 members of CC that he claimed were supporting him on this issue attended the press conference today.

He added that they were extremely unhappy to note that, without any prior notice and their approval, the Secretary General has yesterday unilaterally decided to postpone the said meeting of the CC fixed for this evening.

“We have taken legal advice and believe that this conduct of the Secretary General is illegal and very unfair to us,” he said.

He claimed that Thanenthiran had been “absolutely derelict and careless” and had shown no signs of effective leadership, thereby causing the party to be split into two factions.

“He runs the party as a one-man show, with the association of his family members and relatives as CC members,” he said.

Thanenthiran’s brother is also one of the party’s vice presidents.

The deputy president also claimed that Thanenthiran was not transparent and accountable in his financial dealings.

“We asked him how much money was collected and the source, but he ignored us and said that we should not ask him such questions. So where is the element of democracy in the party that we fighting for?” he said.

He also asked the Prime Minister and all parties to disengage from any dealings with Thanenthiran.

“As the matter deserves serious attention, we will explore all avenues to save our party.

“In this interim, we make a sincere plea to our Prime Minister and all parties to disengage from any dealings with Thanenthiran as it will not be in the interest of our party,” said Vathemurthy, who stressed that his group will remain in the party.

Asked about his next move, Vathemurthy said that he would ask for another CC meting soon.

“We will give them another chance to discuss the agenda. Then we will move from there,” he said and added that they would appoint someone either from inside the party or even an outsider as the new president.

However, he declined to reveal any more.

Makkal Sakthi

Malaysian Makkal Sakthi Party has thrown its support behind PM Najib and BN for the upcoming Bagan Pinang by-election. Not surprising since the PM will be launching the party just a day before the by-election.

MMSP president RS Thanenthiran said the Indian voters of Bagan Pinang have much more to gain should BN’s yet-to-be named candidate win, as the coalition is the ruling state government.

“But if the seat falls to the opposition, it will be a waste for the Indian community there, because they cannot do much in terms of social, educational and economic development,” said Thanenthiran when contacted today.

“This (Bagan Pinang) is a test ground. The prime minister has made various promises to the Indian community. We should give him and his 1Malaysia concept a chance,” he added.

Thanenthiran said a MMSP delegation has met Najib twice – in March and in July – where the prime minister listened to their grouses and pledged to resolve the woes of the Indian community.

“We appreciate that he made time for us and he realises that something must be done – education, gangsterism, alcoholism and work opportunities – these problems were highlighted and he even took down notes,” he said.

However, Thanenthiran stressed that MMSP will remain an “independent” party, despite cozy ties with Najib, adding that the latter was invited to launch the party as the prime minister, and not as the BN chair.

“We are greatly honoured because our PM has an open mind…. We are the Makkal Sakti (people’s power) party and it is clear that this PM is a people’s PM.

“We are attracted to his 1Malaysia concept. This is what we are asking for. We hope by inviting the PM, we can get a clear picture of the 1Malaysia concept,” he said.

I think deep down, people will be happy if MMSP manage to get things down. However, outwardly, it seems like Thanenthiran is riding on Makkal Sakthi and Hindraf name for his party benefit. However, they must be careful to not end up puppets for either coalition. With a claim of 50,000 members, MMSP can try to do something beneficial, but so far, I haven’t heard them speaking on any of the latest issues – Kg Buah Pala or Seksyen 23 cow head protest, for example.

MMSP has an ally in ex-PM Mahathir :

“There seems to be a lot of support for the formation of this party. I think it is a good thing because we don’t want to lose the support of the Indians,” he said to newsmen at his Hari Raya open house in Seri Kembangan on Saturday.

When asked if the formation of another Indian party would dilute MIC’s influence further, he replied: “Well, I think the influence of MIC has already been diluted.”

Ouch!

Meanwhile, HINDRAF’s Waytha is not happy that the movement is being linked with MMSP:

Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Front) chief P Waythamoorthy is livid over news reports that attempts are being made to connect the strictly apolitical human rights and equal rights movement with the newly-registered Malaysian Makkal Sakthi Party (MMSP).

“There seems to be a convoluted agenda to draw similarities between Hindraf and MMSP and this is being encouraged by the powers-that-be,” said Waythamoorthy in a statement toMalaysiakini.

“It is strange that the prime minister agreed to launch a party which is not a member of the ruling Barisan Nasional. The speed with which MMSP was registered speaks for itself.”

Waythamoorthy (left) pointed out that MIC, a founder member of the BN, has also warned several times that it would veto any application by the MMSP to join the BN. Admission to BN must be unanimous, while expulsion is by a simple majority.

“The pair behind the MMSP were ordinary members, if the term can be used, of Hindraf,” said Waythamoorthy.

MMSP is headed by RS Thanenthiran (below), who is party president, and Kannan Ramasamy, the party secretary-general. [I thought they both were some sort of coordinators in HINDRAF]

Both men were active with Hindraf after the government crackdown where a number of the movements lawyers and a volunteer were arrested, noted Waythamoorthy.

‘Makkal sakthi’ expropriated

Explaining the differences between Hindraf and MMSP, Waythamoorthy stressed that the latter is trying to capitalise on the term “makkal sakthi”, Tamil for people power, which was made popular by the rights movement in late 2007.

… “Hindraf will continue to be an umbrella NGO for 30 Indian-based groups which agreed and contributed towards its formation,” said Waythamoorthy. “We are neither pro-Pakatan or anti-BN despite our support for the opposition in the last general election.”

The thrust of Hindraf, according to Waythamoorthy, is to support whoever is pledged towards dismantling the apartheid-like structure of race and religion which has descended on Malaysia.

At the same time, he pledged, the movement will oppose anyone who wants to divide the people of Malaysia along racial and religious lines in politics.

“In short, we are for the truth, regardless of how some people may feel about it,” said Waythamoorthy. “The truth cannot be politicised or sacrificed for reasons of political expediency.”

Drawing a distinction between BN and Umno, the Hindraf chief vowed that his movement will have nothing to do with the Malay-based party, which he blames for all the woes of Malaysians of Indian origin and other Malaysians too.

He does not see Umno redeeming itself ever in the eyes of the Indian community “because it is too set in its ways and politics, and will continue on its death-wish path and implode sooner rather than later”.

Elder brother has right to form own party

The MMSP, claimed Waythamoorthy, is like many other Indian-based political parties who want to emulate the MIC and bring in the Indian votes for the BN to shore up Umno in power “in return for some crumbs from the spoils of office”.

“MMSP is not even a splinter group of Hindraf,” stressed Waythamoorthy. “Neither is the Human Rights Party which is headed by my brother P Uthayakumar and still awaiting registration, unlike the MMSP.

Uthaya has never been a Hindraf activist. He was only the legal advisor.” [This is very confusing statement!]

Uthayakumar thinks that the objectives of Hindraf need to be given a political platform, according to Waythamoorthy.

While he has no quarrel with his brother, he begs to differ since “Hindraf is not his call”.

However, Waythamoorthy concedes that his brother has a right to form his own political party to at least drive home to the electorate the lessons that he has learned during his years in detention under the ISA.

He declined to dwell further on the Human Rights Party, which he was given to understand has no links either with the MMSP.

Waythamoorthy is in self-imposed exile in London where Hindraf has an office, in addition to India, Australia and New York.

The movement’s main work is to liaise with the United Nations, the US State Department and the UK Parliament. Hindraf is also awaiting recognition from the European Parliament.

It also releases the Malaysian Indian Minority and Human Rights Violations Annual Report at the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin and Pravasi Bharathiya Divas international conference every year.

The latter is a gathering of the Indian diaspora where Hindraf and MIC, among others from Malaysia, are represented.

I won’t be surprised if its all some sort of drama. MMSP may end up merging with MIC after Samy leaves, or it may bring in Dato Subra as a heavy weight.  Or it could end up like KIMMA and IPF, forever waiting outside of the coalition.
