50 NGOs and 30000 supporters

As we all know, the rally participant numbers between 6,000 (police) and 50,000 (foreign media, rally organisers, participants). I wonder what the Indian NGOs below would have said after the rally. Where were their 30,000 supporters?

30,000 / 50 Ngos = 600 supporters per NGO. Not to mention, how many percent of the supporters are also supporters of the other NGOs.

I really wonder if these folks did any analysis of their membership strength and activeness. Or simply talk.

A coalition of 50 ethnic Indian NGOs says it will mobilise 30,000 supporters to join the Bersih 2.0 rally tomorrow.

Known as the Angkata Warga Aman Malaysia (Warga Aman), the coalition said it whole-heartedly supported Bersih 2.0’s rally and hoped the authorities would cooperate to make the event a success.

Warga Aman spokesperson Gobi Krishnan said the coalition hoped police would respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s mediation effort between Bersih 2.0 and the government.

“We advise the police to stop all harassment and arrest of people who support Bersih 2.0,” Gobi said in a statement issued late yesterday.

The group said it would gather in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, before marching to Stadium Merdeka.

The 50 NGOs involved include Persekutuan Pertubuhan India Malaysia (Prima), Malaysian Indian Voice (MIV), Persatuan Kemajuan Pelajar Tamil Malaysia and Majlis Kemajuan Belia Bell Tamil.

Two ex-ISA detainees lend voice

NONEGobi’s statement was also endorsed by two former Internal Security Act (ISA) detainess V Ganabatirao (right) and T Vasanthakumar.

The duo were active in the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) movement in 2007 but are now playing the same role in DAP and PKR respectively.

Bersih 2.0 intends to rally at Stadium Merdeka tomorrow but police have denied the coalition a permit for an assembly.

The movement chose to accept the government suggestion to rally at a stadium after the Agong stepped in as mediator on Tuesday.

However, Bersih 2.0 is now accusing Prime Minister Najib Razak of reneging on his word by refusing to do the necessary to facilitate the stadium rally.

Continuing from Day 1 yesterday (BTW, the photos are a bit darker at time due to flash malfunction. The battery leaked).

The exhibition hall at GMI:

Today was the big day for the teams. Both students and teacher will know who will be the champions for 2011.

The day started early at 7am with breakfast, followed by preparation for the public viewing session at 10am. So, the booth were a scene of hectic activity as students and teachers toiled to fix torn papers, top up materials, arrange their presentation and so on. In between, there was a talk on the judging process for the teachers in a separate venue.

Head Judge Mr Shan:

Students testing their equipments:

At 10am, the doors opened for public to enter the exhibition. The public session was until 2.30pm. Personally, I think the crowd was much less as compared to the Selangor/KL region fair held last year (that’s the one I attended, thus able to compare). Maybe because the hall is wider? Or is the location of GMI, which is quite secluded and relatively unknown to the Indian community? Anyway, I estimate about 300 to 500 people attended this fair today (excluding the students and teachers).

Volunteers too are impressed:

During the public session, few booths were set up at the entrance. Among there are MISI (Malaysian Indian Science Intellectuals) who promoted their educational magazine for kids named Thumbi, DHRRA Malaysia, Arivan Fan Club (where I was on duty), Grolier Books, Tamil Foundation and so on. A few games and quizzes were held for visitor to liven up the environment.

Participants:

First was speech by project director Capt Dr Viknesvaran. He said that 300 schools took part in the School Fair Roadshow, while the Science Fair saw participation of 274 schools this year.

Capt Dr Vicky:

This was followed by MCEF’s Mr Satish Ramachandran’s speech. He gave some suggestions on how to improve the fair for the coming year, for example focusing on certain theme, and also to compile CDs of the projects.

MCEF director Mr Satish Ramachandran:

Next to speak was head judge Mr Shanmugam who  mentioned about the judging process. He also mentioned that some of the teams needs to improve in terms of understanding the fundamental principles.

Head Judge Mr Shan:

Media appreciation followed, after which all the teams were invited on stage to receive participation certificates along with tokens of appreciation.

Presentation of participation certificates and tokens of appreciation to all the students:

This was then followed by MyNadi’s Dato’ Dr Jeyaindran’s speech. He announced that the top 5 winners will be given a trip to Petrosains KLCC and also to the Perdana University in Serdang. He also sprang a surprise by announcing that the 1st place winners (and the teachers) will be taken on a tour to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bangalore!!! This is in collaboration with Air Asia and Indian High Commission. This is definitely a wonderful surprise for the participants, and added more tension to the tense environment. Everyone was waiting for the announcement.

MyNadi chairman Dato’ Dr Jeyaindran:

Two new categories were introduced this time: Most Innovative Project and Best Conference Paper. The winners are as below:

Most Innovative Project

Winner: SJKT Kangkar Pulai

2nd: SJKT Ramakrishna

SJKT Ramakrishna:

SJKT Convent:

Best Conference Paper

2nd: SJKT Sg Tukang

3rd: SJKT Yahya Awal

SJKT Kangkar Pulai:

There was another speech (to add to the tension!), this time by MISI representative Mr Saminathan.

Finally, the moment everyone was waiting for. The winners announcement.

5th place went to SJKT Mukundan

3rd place: SJKT Permas Jaya

2nd place: SJKT Tun Aminah

Their booth:

and champions are SJKT Ladang Lanandron!

For the first time, the top three places were swept by schools from the same state, Johor.

The ceremony ended at 5.50pm, and the crowd slowly trickled away.

National Science Fair for Young Children 2011 Day 1

This is the 4th year running the Science Fair (http://www.nsfyc.org/)  is being organised. I attended the central region competition last year while the national level competition was held in Kedah, which means I couldn’t attend it. The organisers this time include DHRRA Malaysia, Tamil Foundation, Vijayaratnam Foundation, MISI, Tamil Schools HM Council, Malaysian Government, MyNadi,  ECMLibra, MCEF, Putera MIC, Astro and few others.

This time, its being held at German Malaysia Institute (GMI) in Bangi. The location is next to the KWSP training center. If you can find the UKM Komuter station, then you can locate GMI.

This year, 60 schools are taking part. Representative from each state is proportionate to the number of Tamil schools in the state.  Each region had their own competition and the selected winners are now in the final round at national level.

The list of schools:

The students (and teachers) started arriving on Friday afternoon. I was at the venue on Friday night, and helped around a little bit. There were some activities like looking at planet Saturn via telescope.

Yesterday (Saturday) started at 8am with the student and teachers preparing their booths.

Preparing the booths:

At 9.30, students were given written test, followed by judges going around judging the projects. This took nearly 4 hours. The judges led by my ex-school teacher Mr Shan were impressed with the projects. BTW, met some of ex-uni mates like Capt Vicky, Vicky Balan, Sathia etc.

Judging Session photos:

I found that the students are quite well prepared. Their projects were amazing indeed. I’m sure the visitors will be equally amazed with the exhibitions on display.

One of the schools that interested me is SJKT Sg Biong from Kuala Kangsar. They have four young participants (I guess Year 3 and 4),which represents HALF their school population! They were regional champions. Must thank the school and teachers for their dedication.

SJKT Sg Biong:

The afternoon program involved the opening ceremony, but I had left by then. At night, there’s a conference for the children, whereby each team will present a paper.

Today morning will see a “viva” session whereby the students will answer questions based on their conference paper. This will be followed by opening of the exhibition for public from 10am till 2pm. The event ends with prize giving ceremony at 3.30pm.

OK, gotta make a move now. Will update the results later tonight in next posting.

MyIndians launches Helping Hands

MyIndians.com has a new look 🙂

I had the opportunity to help out with their Workshop for SPM Leavers 3 months ago. I believe they did a good job and will be able to help more people if got enough volunteers. MyIndians did some advertising blitz via radio (remember the weird  “just click” ad ?) last year. There were (and still is) some suspicion by some quarters that the people behind them are political in nature, mainly since there’s lack of transparency in terms of ownership, organisation and management of the group (not much info on their website regarding this). But so far, they seem to be doing well without any political leanings in their programs. Well, as long as the programs are beneficial to the public and not aimed at pushing any political agenda, then makkal should support them.

So, how to help? You can submit any case via their Helping Hands section on their website, be it education, citizenship,  or poverty cases. You can also choose to help any of the cases displayed in their directory.

A one-stop portal called MyIndians.com has been created to provide information on various issues affecting the community.

The portal will provide information on citizenship issues, education, Tamil school development, skills training courses, job vacancies, business opportunities, scholarships and loans as well as a community forum.

Programme coordinator and one of the portal founders Datin Vasanthi Ramachandran said they started in October last year followed by a launch a month later to disseminate information to the people.

She said during the Thaipusam celebration in January, they registered 3,000 members and about 1,300 did not have citizenships.

Plenty of features: The MyIndians.com portal recently unveiled a Helping Hands section.

By working together with the National Registration Department (JPN), MyIndians.com addressed 44 cases with citizenship problems.

“Our call centre and website receive many applications for MyKad, birth certificate and citizenship every day.

“We get the necessary documents, make the arrangements before presenting the cases to the department and following through the cases,” Vasanthi added.

She said they had linked about 200 SPM students to scholarships, colleges and skill training courses.

Right papers: Dhiban Raj, 2 (left) and Kevend Raj, 6 received proper documentation after seeking help through the portal.

She added they had referred poor people to the Welfare Department and registering them for the e-kasih programme.

“We connect the people to the right government department and also check the legitimacy of each case,” she said.

In April, the portal launched the Helping Hand section, where it allows users to upload their problems and others to provide help.

The portal will go on a nationwide roadshow to get the community involved.

There are 6,000 members registered with MyIndians.com

Vasanthi said they wanted to help deal with social issues and stigma concerning the community.

“There is a Facebook page with about 500 registered volunteers from various sectors who are passionate about MyIndians.com and what it stands for.

“So we would like to urge those who want to help or can offer services to join us,” she said.

As part of promoting a healthier lifestyle, MyIndians is organising a futsal tournament on Sept 24 at Ferro Futsal, Jalan TS 6/1, Taman Perindustrian Subang, Subang Jaya.

It is open to all irrespective of age, gender and race with a team of 10 players. Registration fee is RM250 per team and the closing date is June 30.

The winning teams stand a chance to take home RM5,000 followed by RM3,000 and RM2,000.

MyIndians UPU Application Workshop for SPM Leavers

April 8th, 2011

I helped out a bit at MyIndians UPU Application Workshop for SPM Leavers which was held on 26th and 27th March. It was held at the office in 3 2 Square PJ. About 400 over students/parents came for the workshop (held over two days). There was  a general briefing, followed by individual counselling (if needed) by volunteers who represented various careers (medicine, engineering, skills based, teaching etc). This was followed by briefing on how to apply to UPU. And interestingly, the organisers managed to get BSN to open a counter to sell PIN numbers on the spot! The irony is that some students/parents don’t even know that they need a PIN number to apply to IPTA. Good thing the BSN counter was there. The organisers had also printed a simple booklet explaining about what to do after SPM.

As a follow-up event, they are having workshop for JPA scholarship applicant on interview tips:

MyIndians.com calls all those who have applied for JPA scholarships for a special training this Saturday, 9th April 2011 (10 am to 12 noon) on how to conduct yourself on the interview day. Please call our help centre or Asha at 012-3431656 for details

SPM students can register with them to get more info. Go to:
