500k /28,000 = M17.85 per person. Well, something is better than nothing, as they say. And its coming from an allocated sum of RM3.5 million for the non-Muslims. So the other communities (Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, etc) are left with RM3 million.

IPOH: Half a million ringgit for a community of more than 28,000 people may seem paltry for some, but for the leaders of the Sikh organisations here, the annual allocation of RM500,000 beginning next year is their wish come true.

Union of Perak Sikh Organisations (UPSO) chairman Dheer Singh lauded Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir for providing an allocation for the state’s Sikh community.

“We never had any budget that recognised Sikhs as a community deserving of financial assistance from the government.

“I salute Zambry for the announcement,” he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

On Wednesday, Zambry announced a RM500,000 allocation to the Sikhs, which will come from the RM3.5 million allocated for non-Muslim affairs in Perak.

The state government gave the allocation following talks between Zambry and UPSO over the last few months on issues facing the Sikh community.

UPSO represents eight major Sikh organisations in the state: Khalsa Diwan Malaysia, Guru Kalgidhar Diwan Malaysia, Sikh Single Mothers Association, Perak Sikh Union, Perak Sikh Youth Association, Perak Sikh Education Aid Fund, Milap Club and the Punjabi Party of Malaysia.

Zambry said he understood the plight and struggles of the Sikh community.

“I hope with this allocation, the Sikhs will be able to carry out important projects for the good of the community,” he said, adding that the state government was prepared to increase the allocation in subsequent budgets.

Non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the state goverment would work with UPSO to identify how the allocation should be spent.

This article came out on Star few days ago. The BN state government also allocated 2000ha for Islamic religious schools aid and 1000ha for private Chinese school aid. The aim is to use the proceeds from the cultivation of the land via an education fund to help the poor students.

It is indeed a good news. We can only hope that capable people are given the trust to manage the land, and all the three lands receive similar returns.

In what is seen as a Deepavali gift, the Perak government has announced the allocation of 800ha of land to generate funds for an Indian education fund in the state.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said earnings from the land, to be cultivated with oil palm by the Perak Foundation, would be channelled into the fund (Tabung Pendidikan dan Pengupayaan Pendidikan Kaum India) for distribution to poor students.

“I hope this will come as good news for the Indians who will be celebrating Deepavali tomorrow.

This is the state government’s commitment to ensure that all races facing problems related to education are given aid,” he told reporters after attending the 2009 Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here.

He said the state government had also allocated 2,000ha for the benefit of more than 700 Islamic religious schools and 1,000ha to aid private Chinese schools.

At least there’s some good news in the papers today!

The Perak Government has gazetted the land on which the popular Sri Maha Karumariaman Muneeswarar Temple sits in Jalan Lahat, Falim here as a “worship area.”

Announcing this Thursday, state executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the Hindu temple had a rich history dating back 80 years.

“People of different races and from different parts of the world come to worship here. It is also a popular tourist destination,” he told reporters after visiting the temple with state Indian affairs adviser Datuk S. Veerasingam.

Temple committee president K. Kanesan said the committee had been applying for the land title to the 0.5ha plot since 1974.

“We’ve been waiting for so long to get a land title and having the land gazetted as a worship area is far better than anything else.

“It is the best gift we could ever have,” Kanesan said while thanking the state government and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

According to its priest Harcharan Singh, the temple attracts about 3,000 devotees with the number swelling to about 10,000 people during festivals.

One less temple to worry over land issues now. After 35 years of misery, they manage to get this “worship area” status – whatever that means and holds.  Hopefully its something permanent and valid in the eyes of the law.

Perak govt propose changes to solve land problems

The current Perak government is proposing changes in order to solve land problems in Perak. Remember the issue of land titles for New Villages? Perak’s current MB mentioned that the populist by PR government did not get much response. Any comments?

The Perak Government has submitted new proposals to the National Land Council (NLC) in hopes of solving land problems faced by Perak folk.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the suggestions not only dealt with converting leasehold titles to freehold in new and planned villages but encompassed a more holistic approach to solving the people’s land problems.

“We have submitted our proposals to the NLC and they will decide at their meeting.

“However, it is important to note that we do not want to focus specifically on one particular area or group.

“Land matters in Perak are faced by all and there are many inherent, long-running issues that need to be addressed,” he said after opening the Beruas Umno division delegates’ conference at Dewan Inderawati here yesterday.

Dr Zambry said there were numerous areas where farmers had toiled on the land for decades but had yet to receive land grants or even temporary occupational licences (TOLs).

“In places like Kuala Sapeteng, there are people living in river reserves, which is not appropriate.

“In these kinds of situations, TOLs cannot be issued and we have to think about relocation but I do not want to impose anything on the residents if it goes against their wishes and cause them further hardship,” he said.

Dr Zambry said a more comprehensive approach was needed to solve the state’s land woes, unlike the Pakatan Rakyat’s style of introducing populist policies that would not benefit everyone in the long run.

“It is my dream for each Perak family to have land or at least a home to call their own.

“And I have always stressed that when it comes to land matters, there will be no discrimination amongst different groups or races. Everyone is equal,” he said.

On the move to allow houseowners in the state’s 349 planned and 134 new villages to convert their leasehold titles to freehold at an 80% discount on the land premium, Dr Zambry said the response had been very poor.

Not many can afford it. There are those who can and those who cannot. This is why I said there needs to be a better approach in handling the matter,” he said.

State exco member Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said only 2,401 houseowners in the 55,233 in new villages had applied for the conversion.

In planned villages, only 463 houseowners out of the 73,730 had done so.

KTMB approves land for school after 10 years!

This news came out on Malaysiakini (July 28). The community which slogged for KTM in the yesteryears have to wait 10 years for an approval (and that too with the struggle of a political party). Syabas to KTM!  We should be thankful that at least they gave the approval.  Let’s give them full marks for the CSR.

The 10-year struggle by MIC to get railway land approval for the reconstruction of termite-infested SJK (T) Perak Sangeetha Sabah has finally seen the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel when Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) approved the application recently.

The wooden-double storey wooden building situated on a 0.3ha land along Jalan Tun Abdul Razak is in the heartland of the Indian community in Ipoh city and has an enrolment of 178 pupils.

Malaysiakini had recently highlighted this long-standing problem when the dilapidated primary school (right) could not accommodate the growing number of Indian schoolchildren in this area.

Today, Perak MIC chief G Rajoo told the media that all the pupils and staff of the school will be temporarily relocated at SK Buntong at the end of the month.

“The construction work on the new four-storey building costing RM2.3 million will commence on Aug 17 and is expected to be completed in a year’s time,” Rajoo stated.

Old school replaced

The old school, built in 1934 consisted of six-classrooms, will now make way for a 12-classroom new school.

On July 10, MIC president S Samy Vellu had expressed his frustration at KTMB’s refusal to approve the railway land for construction of the new school.

He is said to have wanted to take up the matter with Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat.

Rajoo (left) further stated that a total of RM 6 million has been allocated for the construction and expansion of three Tamil primary schools which includes SJK (T) Sangeetha.

The other two schools which will have a new extension wing each are SJK (T) Ghanthi Kalasalai in Sungai Siput with 10 additional classrooms and SJK (T) Tan Sri Datuk Manickavasagam situated in Tanjong Malim with six additional classrooms.

“Another eight Tamil schools will either undergo reconstruction or extension of the buildings,” said Rajoo.

The schools are: SJK(T) Ladang Beruang River in Tanjung Malim, SJK(T) Methodist (Malim Nawar), SJK(T) Ladang Kota Bharu(Gopeng), SJK(T) Ladang Batuk Rabit (Teluk Intan),SJK(T) Ladang Flemington(Sungai Sumun), SJK(T) Noba Scotia 2 (Teluk Intan), SJK(T) Jebong Lama(Matang) and SJK(T) Ladang Gabis( Padang Rengas).

Earlier, Samy voiced out his frustation (and he should do more of this so that the community can know who the culprits are):

“They have forgotten the sacrifices made by Indians who played a major role in the construction of the railway track from Ipoh to Padang Besar,” said Samy.

… “KTMB must remember that the railway track could not have been completed without the manpower of Indians. Many sacrificed their lives when the Padang Rengas railway tunnel was being built,” said Samy

“KTMB has conveniently forgotten the history of the Indian community’s contributions to the construction of the railway network,” he added.

He said there is a big Indian community concentrated in this area and more Indian children want to enrol in SJK (T) Perak Sangeetha Sabah.

“But there is not enough space to accommodate them unless KTMB gives permission to rebuild the school.”

Samy pointed out that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak (right) had given RM100 million, and former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had allocated another RM30 million for the construction of 60 new Tamil schools.

The money is also for repairs and extension of buildings for Tamil schools in the country.

“SJK (T) Perak Sangeetha Sabah is on the list schools which is to benefit from the allocations, but KTMB is denying the Indian community the right to study in a newly-built school.

‘I’m going to speak Tee Keat’

“When we have the funds (to build new schools)… we do not have the land and, when we have the land… we do not have the funds,” said a frustrated Samy (below).

“I’m going to speak to transport minister Ong Tee Keat about this matter (KTMB’s decision not to allow MIC to build a new school),” he said.
