SHAH ALAM: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim came under heavy criticism from MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin over allegations that the MIC had neglected the welfare of the estate workers.
When Anwar was deputy prime minister, he “did nothing” for the estate workers, let alone the Indian community, said Samy Vellu, who is also the Works Minister.
“I have copies of letters I sent to him seeking assistance (for estate workers when Anwar was deputy prime minister), but he did not lift a finger to help,” he told reporters after opening the MIC Wanita, Youth and Puteri general assemblies here.
Anwar had also claimed that estate workers were intimidated and bribed into supporting the Barisan Nasional during the recent Ijok state constituency by-election, which was won by the Barisan Nasional candidate from the MIC, K. Parthiban.
PKR had fielded former Guthrie Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in the by-election.
In his address to the MIC Youth assembly, Khairy said Anwar had been touted as Malaysia’s future but Barisan had proved that he was part of history and finished.
“They also claimed that Ijok was a comeback for Anwar and PKR but we have thwarted the nuclear bombs and missiles thrown at us.
“They did everything. They spoke ill of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak but now they don’t have anything any more,” he said

Samy fires back.

“In Batang Berjuntai, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the practice of pouring development projects in a by-election was not new as it was well practised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was deputy prime minister.
“He is a good teacher and I learnt well from him,” he said in reference to claims that projects to upgrade roads in the Ijok constituency were only coming into the area due to the by-election.”
Samy fires salvo: Anwar gets a dose of his own medicine.
BN will win as machinery working well, says Najib

KUANTAN: It is going to be a tough by-election with aggressive opposition campaigning but the Barisan Nasional is prepared to face the challenge in Ijok.
BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the coalition machinery had gone through similar election battles and knew how to handle them.
“We have experienced this before. Our people are tough but at the same time we respect the law,” he said when asked to comment on the tense situation in Ijok on nomination day on Thursday.
Speaking after launching the Malaysian Unit Trust Week 2007 here yesterday, Najib said he was satisfied with the preparations made by the BN machinery and urged party workers to continue their excellent work.
“I was there until midnight (Thursday) and could see that our machinery is working well.” The April 28 by-election for the Ijok seat will see a straight fight between BN’s K. Parthiban and PKR treasurer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
In Batang Berjuntai, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the practice of pouring development projects in a by-election was not new as it was well practised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was deputy prime minister.
“He is a good teacher and I learnt well from him,” he said in reference to claims that projects to upgrade roads in the Ijok constituency were only coming into the area due to the by-election.
Anwar is now PKR advisor and has been campaigning intensively in Ijok.
Samy Vellu explained that all the projects were approved at least six months ago and were part of the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
On complaints that Parthiban had not been seen campaigning in Indian and Chinese areas, he said the BN candidate was busy covering the Malay areas.
“Once he is done with the ground work in the Malay areas, he will move on to the Indian and Chinese areas.”
