30 percent bumi equity quota and racial composition of employees

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 5, 2007): The government has defended the move to introduce a guideline requiring 30% bumiputra participation in wholesale distribution business by foreigners.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk S.Veerasingam said the 30% bumiputra equity ownership contained in the guideline had been approved and accepted by the Cabinet on Oct 20, 2004. "It is in line with the national development aspiration, which is to rectify the economic and social imbalance and pay attention to the development of a bumiputra industrial and business community," he said in his winding up to points raised by MPs in the Budget 2008 debate in the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament) today. He however added that the guideline requirement could be negotiated, whereby the ministry could provide such companies a grace period to find the necessary bumiputra partner or investment company.

On the guideline relating to racial composition of the directorship and composition of personnel in such companies, Veerasingam said the move was to ensure that all Malaysians, irrespective of racial background, would be able to benefit from such foreign investments.

Samy retracts MIC Deepavali open house ban

i was first alerted via SMS by Mahendran on Monday evening that MIC is not going to have Deepavali open house this year. Later caught the news on TV3 that said the statement was retracted.

Samy retracts ‘no big Deepavali do’ advice

PETALING JAYA (Nov 5, 2007): Hours after MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu issued a statement on Monday afternoon, advising all MIC wakil rakyat (elected representatives) not to hold big Deepavali celebrations as a sign of the party’s respect for Hindus mourning the demolition of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Padang Jawa, Shah Alam, the request was retracted.

It is learnt that Samy Vellu retracted the advice at 6.30pm, in view of the overwhelming requests from MIC members and Hindus to continue with the tradition on Deepavali, which falls on Thursday.The first statement said Samy Vellu’s advice was aimed at all MIC MPs and state assemblymen, deputy ministers and parliamentary secretaries.

“He said the MIC was saddened by the temple’s domolition and the act had hurt all Hindus in the country.

“However, he said MIC wakil rakyat were encouraged to celebrate Deepavali on a moderate scale with their family and relatives at home.”

Last Tuesday, 14 residents were arrested in the protest that ensued when the the 100-year-old temple in Kampung Karuppiah, a surau and some 200 houses in Kampung Rimba Jaya were demolished with the participation of the Shah Alam City Hall, some 300 police personnel, including the Federal Reserve Unit.

Samy Vellu turned up at the scene but he could not do anything to stop the demolition of the temple, and later, four lawyers who tried to help the residents who were held in the Section 11 police station were also detained. The lawyers were arrested for creating a scuffle after they were refused entry. Later that day, six were released on bail – two residents and the lawyers. The remaining 12 who were said to be injured during the fracas, were also released on bail last Friday.

i thought the demolition happened on tuesday morning! the ways it was done as if purposed want to destroy the deities and just make a mess. the walls were still there, the building structure was still there.  to me, looked like purposely want to provoke the anger of the people.

given two days to remove deities? what deities? haven't they been smashed up during the day?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor government has allocated a 10,000 sq ft piece of land in Shah Alam for the rebuilding of the temple it ordered demolished in Kampung Karuppiah.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu yesterday said the state government will also assist in its construction.

He said the demolition of the temple in Kampung Karuppiah, Padang Jawa, which started on Tuesday night, had been put on hold under orders from the prime minister.

This followed a meeting between Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.

It was agreed that the temple would be given two days to remove statues of deities and other religious artifacts.

Meanwhile, the Bar Council is asking why four lawyers representing the temple congregation on the demolition issue had been arrested.

A statement said lawyers P. Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, P. Waythamoorthy and Ganapati Rao were arrested in the course of carrying out their legal professional duties.

The lawyers had turned up at the Section 11, Shah Alam police station to represent their clients who were earlier arrested for hindering the demolition work and were reported to have been denied access to their clients.

Upon complaining to the police, they were arrested.

Bar Council vice president Ragunath Kesavan said: "The recently amended section 28A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) allows a detained person the right to communicate with a legal practitioner of his choice upon arrest.

"We are concerned that these arrested persons, including the four lawyers, were denied this right, which is a flagrant breach of the CPC."

The lawyers have since been released on bail.

PM says react with moderation over religious issues

this really takes the cake. coming from the very person who did not entertain top leader of indian community, pembela rakyat india di malaysia who went to meet him at shah alam.

Abdullah also pointed out non-Muslims also had their religious sensitivities. (yah..like smashing up deities).

“So it is important that we all take great care in what we say and ensure what we say is always right and moderate. We don’t have to be harsh in our words or go overboard even though we feel angry and hurt,” he said, adding that his message was also meant for the non-Muslims. 

“Even though many things are not right, what is important is that we discuss things among each other. Muslims must work to make others understand them (wow…what does that imply in the case of selangor MB and the MBSA?). Religious tolerance is when everyone understands what is happening and takes the correct action,” he said.

React with moderation over religious issues, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Muslims should react with care and moderation even though they are rightfully hurt and angered by insensitivities to their religion.  

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said religion was a sensitive matter to everyone and Malaysians should be thankful that they are able to honour religious sensitivities so as not to create a situation that benefited no one. 

He noted that there were cases such as the caricature of Prophet Muhammad which had rightfully angered Muslims around the world, and they reacted strongly with outrage. 

“Those of other religions did not understand the strong reaction by Muslims and asked why it was such a big deal. We do not regard it as small matter but as a serious one. 

“The Muslims’ reaction reflected their frustration over the episode not because they were being emotional but because they took it as an insult to Islam and reacted spontaneously,” he said when closing the National Umno Religious Bureau Chairmen Conference here yesterday, where he also launched the Umno religious bureau website and bulletin.

samy velu attacks MP for Tangga Batu

Samy Velu seemed to be quite ferocious today at parliment. MP for Tangga Batu (BN) who asked him about road connectivity to highways got it left and right. Really kena hentam. In his words "Saya sudah berumur 71 tahun. Saya tak takut dengan siapa pun". I think Tangga Batu really loose face. Anyway, his face was not shown on TV, probably to save his image. Better for him to hang himself than show his face in parliment any more. SV is unbeatable in parliment. sadly he lose to half-indonesian khir toyo over the temple. I'm sure SV won't forget this betrayal.

I'll try to post the hansard later.

I think the events from the preceding day has emotionally affected samy velu, that's why he wants to tunjuk belang.
