SHAH ALAM: Seri Andalas assemblywoman Kamala Ganapathy will be appointed as the new Selangor executive councillor for Unity and Welfare of Estate and Mine Workers.
The two-term assemblywoman takes over from the late Datuk K. Sivalingam, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo announced after the weekly state Exco meeting yesterday.
Kamala will be sworn-in on May 14 and will be the second woman executive councillor for Selangor, after Seri Setia assemblywoman Datin Paduka Seripah Noli Syed Hussin, who is in charge of Welfare, Women and Culture.
Kamala said she is looking forward to carrying out her new role.
“My priorities will be sowing the seeds of unity in Selangor as well as solving any outstanding problems faced by estate workers. “Housing for workers at a few estates needs to be looked into and I will get down to the task after I take my oath on Monday.”
Kamala added she was grateful to Dr Mohd Khir and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu for having confidence in her and giving her the opportunity to serve.
The 57-year-old widower from Petaling Jaya is a mother of four.
Her late husband, S. Ganapathy, was the former press secretary to Samy Vellu.
Kamala started her political career in 1985 when she established the Kampung Maarof MIC branch in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. She currently resides in Kampung Tunku in Petaling Jaya.

JJ apologises to Sheena
Boston: Jamaluddin Jarjis yesterday offered an apology to student Sheena Moorthy over remarks he made during a lunch with about 40 students, including Sheena, in Los Angeles last week. The minister told a gathering of a few hundreds students here that he had said some things in jest; nonetheless, he wished to apologise to “the student in LA” if he had offended her, an aide told me on the phone.
I have sent Sheena a couple of mails seeking more info since she sent me her mail on May 3 about how upset she was. JJ has come under fire on-line, with some blogs even calling for his sacking [here]. Sheena confirmed in her latest mail this morning that she was away in Boston the last couple of days. I’ve shot her another mail asking her views about the apology. Am awaiting her comments.
JJ did right to apologise, in my opinion. It is a quality missing in many politicians. Even journalists. Till today, for example, people are still waiting for Kalimullah Hassan to apologise for the June 11 column he wrote in The Sunday Times [read here]. Khairy Jamaluddin also hasn’t apologised for his racial slurs he made against the Chinese last year [incidentally, Rustam Sani mentioned KJ’s refusal to apologise in his posting today; read here].

PM – reprimand and discipline JJ for racist remarks against Malaysian Indians in California
The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi should reprimand and discipline the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Seri Dr. Jamaludin Jarjis for his disgraceful conduct in making racist and derogatory remarks about Malaysian Indians when he met Malaysian students in California on Monday (30th April).
During his official visit to California on Monday, Jamaludin met some of the Malaysian students studying in California especially the ones from TPM Academy twinning programme at the Belacan Grill Malaysian Restaurant, Redondo Beach, Ca.
One of the students was Sheena Moorthy, a third-year Biotech Malaysian student in CALYPOLY.
Sheena complained that during the 3 ½ hour session, Jamaludin passed a few racial remarks on her, being one of the two Indians present there.
Sheena has formally written to the Prime Minister to complain against Jamaludin for the “totally uncalled-for racial insults”, citing the following instances:
Incident 1 – Each student had to briefly introduce themselves. When it came to her turn, while speaking he interrupted her and asked if she knew Samy Vellu, because he knows him. She did not see any relevance in that and he mentioned it a few times for no apparent reason.
Incident 2 – He gave a speech regarding how agriculture started in Malaysia. He mentioned how the British invested in Malaysia and made farmers work. Due to the lack of work force, “buruh India” was brought in. While mentioning this, he looked at her saying “that’s how we get Indians in Malaysia”.
Incident 3 – After saying he is going to get MARA to help the Bumiputra students, he looked at her and asked “How many Indians are here?” Sheena did not keep track of number of Indian students so she mentioned that in the room there were two (pointing to another Malaysian Indian friend, who is fair skinned) and Jamaludin looked at him and asked “Oh. You are an Indian? Which means you are an upper class Indian and she is the lower class one” (pointing at her). Jamaludin went on to say that, “Oh, I am not going to help upper class Indians, I only help the lower class ones. They are the ones that need it’.
Sheena left the room feeling very insulted as the Minister had judged her based on her skin colour.
This incident happened in front of a crowd of about 100 people including students, officials from the Malaysian Consulate, TPM, Tourism Malaysia, etc. But everyone is afraid and nobody is prepared to stand up to speak the truth.
I can fully understand Sheena’s hurt feelings at being humiliated and insulted by Jamaluddin in public. All right-thinking Malaysians should support Sheena’s demand for a public apology from Jamaludin.
Sheena’s sister, Dr. Sheela Moorthy, who is currently living in the USA and supporting her sister’s education at CalyPoly, is so incensed that she has written to the media to express her disgust and anger that a Minister of a multi-racial country should be making such racist and derogatory remarks about Malaysian Indians at a function abroad, giving the country a bad image.
Sheena has also written to complain about Jamaluddi’s biased and disgraceful conduct to several Malaysian Ministers, including the MIC President and Works Minister, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
I hope Samy Vellu would raise the Sheena issue at the Cabinet meeting next Wednesday to add his voice to the growing demand for public apology from Jamaludin and to support the Prime Minister to reprimand and take disciplinary action against the Science, Technlogy and Innovation Minister.
Jamaludin is still in the United States as he is currently leading a 300-man Malaysian delegation to the Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) Convention in Boston, Massachussets.

SHAH ALAM: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim came under heavy criticism from MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin over allegations that the MIC had neglected the welfare of the estate workers.
When Anwar was deputy prime minister, he “did nothing” for the estate workers, let alone the Indian community, said Samy Vellu, who is also the Works Minister.
“I have copies of letters I sent to him seeking assistance (for estate workers when Anwar was deputy prime minister), but he did not lift a finger to help,” he told reporters after opening the MIC Wanita, Youth and Puteri general assemblies here.
Anwar had also claimed that estate workers were intimidated and bribed into supporting the Barisan Nasional during the recent Ijok state constituency by-election, which was won by the Barisan Nasional candidate from the MIC, K. Parthiban.
PKR had fielded former Guthrie Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in the by-election.
In his address to the MIC Youth assembly, Khairy said Anwar had been touted as Malaysia’s future but Barisan had proved that he was part of history and finished.
“They also claimed that Ijok was a comeback for Anwar and PKR but we have thwarted the nuclear bombs and missiles thrown at us.
“They did everything. They spoke ill of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak but now they don’t have anything any more,” he said

SHAH ALAM: Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu’s claim that he can prove how Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ignored the needs of Indians while in government is no empty boast.
The MIC chief still has the letters of rejection issued by the Parti Keadilan Rakyat leader to members of the Indian business community who had applied for opportunities to better themselves.
“For nine years, he rejected all applications from the Indian business community and I have the letters to prove it,” he said after opening the general assemblies of MIC Wanita, Pemuda and Puteri 2007 at Dewan Jubli Perak.
He said Anwar, who was the former deputy prime minister, was out of touch with reality and had no grounds to accuse the MIC of neglecting the needs of Indians.
“He never helped the community while in government,” he said in rejecting Anwar’s allegations made in Malaysiakini. On the defeat of Parti Keadilan Rakyat candidate Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in the Ijok by-election, he said Indian voters wanted to teach him a lesson as he had also ignored the needs of Indians.
‘The reality is this. He (Khalid) had forced Indian workers off estates. I have the photographs to prove this.”
Samy Vellu also rejected allegations that the Barisan Nasional had used money politics to win by-elections.
He said the Indians had found their feet in business and other sectors with the Barisan Nasional government, reducing the number of Indians in estates from 80 per cent to 38 per cent.
“Opportunities for Indians to obtain higher education followed by jobs have brought changes to the community.”
Samy Vellu added that the MIC was evolving with new leaders coming to the forefront to work with veterans.
“This is a healthy trend with young leaders like new Ijok assemblyman, K. Parthiban, emerging to enhance the party leadership.”
Earlier, Samy Vellu said Wanita MIC should look into the plight of the 10,000 single Indian mothers who were largely in dire straits
