Sivakumar maintains stand

Speaker Sivakumar today provided more clarification over allegations that he lied about not knowing about notice for assembly sitting:

Perak Assembly Speaker V. Sivakumar vehemently denied he had known about the issuance of notices on the May 7 state assembly sitting as alleged in a report in an English daily Monday.

In a faxed statement Tuesday, Sivakumar reiterated that he had never been aware of the notices and had only first heard about the sitting from an assemblyman last Thursday.

“The assemblyman said that a reliable source had said that assembly sitting would be held on May 7. Before that day, I never knew anything about the sitting,” he said.

Sivakumar was responding to an English daily report Monday in which an unnamed source supposedly close to the Mentri Besar’s office had accused Sivakumar of lying about his knowledge of the notices.

The source had claimed that Sivakumar had even met with State Assembly secretary Abdullah Antong Sabri last Friday prior to notices being issued.

During the meeting, the source claimed the duo had allegedly even examined official documents from the palace pertaining to the Ruler’s consent for the May 7 sitting.

I only met with Abdullah at 3pm that day, after Friday prayers and only after the notices had already been distributed.

“In that informal meeting, I never saw any documents from the palace,” Sivakumar said.

Sivakumar added that he had only known about the notices earlier Friday morning, following phone calls from several assemblymen who had received them.

He said that he had also phoned his office in the State Secretariat and found out from his staff that the same notice had been delivered to him there at 10am

… Earlier Tuesday, Abdullah, when approached by reporters at the State Secretariat here, told reporters that the issue of whether he had met with Sivakumar on the May 7 sitting “should not arise.”

He said that it had already been common knowledge that the Ruler had granted consent for the sitting.

“Rest assured, proper legal procedures were followed. The issue of whether Speaker and I met does not arise,” he said.

He however refused to comment on whether he had briefed or informed Sivakumar on the notices before sending them out.

So, looks like some “unnamed sources” is creating havoc.

Hindu Temples in KL agree to relocate

Well, 28 out of 29 agree to relocate, says Deputy FT minister Saravanan:

Twenty-eight out of 29 Hindu temples sitting on disputed land around Kuala Lumpur have agreed to relocate by May.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said all 28 temple caretakers had agreed to relocate to several locations provided by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) except for the Sri Muniaswarar Temple in Jalan Air Panas, Setapak, which remained adamant in staying put.

“It is the government’s policy not to demolish any house of worship without first giving it an alternative area to relocate to.

“To those who refuse to relocate, they will be given 30 days and an alternative location, following which we may proceed to demolish the building,“ he told reporters at the Buddha Miao You Temple in Setapak yesterday.

Saravanan said the temples had been given notices to relocate last year but many refused to do so until the DBKL issued the last notice on March 1.

“We did not force them to move out without giving them another place to go; several alternatives had been suggested,” he said.

Its indeed a good news as ugly confrontation leading to demolishment of temples have been avoided. However, it will be better if the list of temples, date of establishment, registration status of the temple committee,  cost of relocation, land status and location of new sites, are also revealed (both offline and online)  so that we don’t find temples end up next to sewerage ponds or water tanks.

And what is the reason for the sole temple not agreeing to relocate?

Speaker Sivakumar lying?

This is quite serious accusation. State Assembly speaker Sivakumar said he was not informed about the call for assembly sitting.  But NST published the story below:

Sources close to the menteri besar’s office told the New Straits Times yesterday that state assembly secretary Abdullah Antong had even a 30-minute meeting at the speaker’s office on Friday, before the notices were sent out to all 59 state assemblymen.

A source said: “It was a blatant lie when he claimed to have only known about it from several state assemblymen and newspapers. He was properly informed of the sitting and the meeting (on Friday) was granted by none other than Sivakumar himself.”

“During the meeting, Abdullah fully briefed him on the proposed sitting and explained that the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, had given his consent for the sitting.”

The source also revealed that documented evidence of the ruler’s consent and assurance that all processes and procedures had been adhered to were also explained at length to Sivakumar.

“It was even pointed out to him that the sitting must be carried out in a dignified and honourable way, befitting the institution,” he said, adding that the meeting was carried out in a cordial manner.

“All the necessary procedures were followed, the ruler’s consent was obtained, notices were sent out and the speaker was duly notified of the proposed sitting.

“Why is he denying all this by issuing a statement to that effect?” asked the source.

Sivakumar, at a press conference at his office at the state secretariat building here on Saturday, said he had suspended Abdullah for issuing the notices without his knowledge or consent.

If its proven that Sivakumar lied, it will seriously erode his credibility and make it easier to replace him. So, who is correct? The speaker or the assembly secretary?

Sikh community request

The Sikh community took the opportunity to request for few things when DPM Muhyiddin attended their Vaisakhi dinner:

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has given the Sikh community an assurance that they will not be left behind in the country’s progress.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who strongly reiterated the need for Malaysians to stay united, said the Sikh community has done a lot for the country, and called on them to continue contributing to the nation’s development.

“The Sikhs have had a long tradition in Malaysia. They are a hardy race, determined and united community,” he said at the Grand Vaisakhi charity dinner hosted by the Malaysian Punjabi Chambers of Commerce and Industries (MPCCI) last night.

Muhyiddin said that being united would allow the country to surge ahead and would lead to a clear and tangible change.

“Whatever our origins, we are all Malaysians,” he said in reference to the 1Malaysia concept.

Muhyiddin said the Government was aware that the recent fragmentation among Malaysians was due to insufficient attention being paid to unity.

“Some have fallen through the gap and this has led to unhappiness and dissent in certain quarters,” he added.

Earlier, MPCCI president Datuk Daljit Singh Dhalliwal called on the Government to recognise Vaisakhi as a national event for Sikhs and that Vaisakhi open houses be sponsored by the Government at the national and state level.

Daljit Singh also requested for more federal aid to be given to Sikh non-governmental organisations and hoped that the Sikh community would not be left out when new policies were formulated.
