Not sure about other political parties in Malaysia, but it seems in MIC, the president can sack a member. This is provided for in the constitution of MIC. Most recent case is that of Bayan Baru division head Nganana Sagaran:

After consulting deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel yesterday, we have decided to sack the division chief.

“He was found to have worked for the opposition in the run-up to the March 8 general election.

“We have also received reliable information that the division leader was planning to jump to the opposition. This is unacceptable to the party and its leadership,” MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said yesterday.

At least there were some consultation before executing this decision. Meanwhile, the victim tries to clear his name:

Nganana Sagaran, meanwhile, told the New Straits Times that the allegations against him were baseless.

“I have always been a party loyalist. As such, it came as a surprise to me that I had been sacked,” he said.

Nganana Sagaran said the only thing he did which may have irked the party leadership was to attend an anti-ISA forum held at Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s residence recently.

“I was asked by reporters at the event about my attendance there and I told them that I was totally against the use of ISA and that it was meant for terrorists.

“That was it. I had done nothing wrong.”

He said party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had brought up the matter at the party central working committee meeting last month where it was decided that he would have to face the party disciplinary board.

“I did not received any show-cause letter. Suddenly, I am sacked,” he said.

Well, Malaysiakini did it again. It broke the news that PM Badawi will not contest in the next UMNO elections and is quitting in March. Its insider information:

“PM to step down in March, DPM to take over. He won’t stand for Umno election,” a component party leader told Malaysiakini via an SMS message. The meeting is still underway.

It is also learnt that the BN leaders are presently thanking Abdullah for his leadership.

I was thinking that he’ll live to fight another day, but looks like he’s closing shop.

I had a gut feeling that PM Badawi would not let go off his post easily. He may have given indication of doing so to rat out his political enemies. According to a blog posting by UMNO’s Ruhanie Ahmad, the PM had a meeting with his staunch supporters from 11pm yesterday until 2am today morning and the decision was to remain as president of UMNO and to stand for president post in the upcoming UMNO elections. Not sure for how long. So far, no confirmation of the posting yet nor any news from Putrajaya. Today may yet turn out to be another significant day (we are having many of those this year). By the way, the meeting was attend by representatives of Ali Rustam, who is standing for vice president’s post.

UPDATE: Malaysiakini quotes an insider who says:

Confirming that the meeting did take place, an influential Umno insider however told Malaysiakini that the meeting was nothing but a “casual meeting”.

“He has made up his mind. He will step down. I don’t think Abdullah decided this morning that he would defend his post,” said the source.

The source insisted, however, that this is “most unlikely” to happen as many BN leaders are dissatisfied with his performance.

“His execution of his reform plans is slow and many BN leaders are unhappy. Like I said, he will step down as planned and not defend his post,” stressed the source.

Hindraf national co-ordinator Kannan Ramasamy today denied the accusation by PM Badawi that only one person wished him festive greetings.

“We went there in peace and there are no photographs or video footage showing us being unruly,” said Kannan.

He said he knew many Hindraf supporters attending the open house had extended Raya greetings to Abdullah.

“I am surprised the Prime Minister was not aware of this.”

Xavier Jayakumar who visited the demolished temple met with over 300 people. He briefed them on the plans for Indian temples in Selangor. He urged all Hindu temples in Selangor to register with the relevant municipal councils within a month so that the government would have a record of all temples in the state and also ensure that no temple would be demolished in the future. He said committees fighting for ownership of land for their temples in Selangor could meet him to submit their applications.

This news appeared in Makkal Osai. Not sure if he apologies over his earlier statements on temple demolition being a small issue.
