Canteen closed at Ipoh GH during fasting month?

Surprised to read this situation which was report last week, but then, looking at the way things are going, not surprised anymore. Can anyone update if the canteen is still closed? Does this infringe on the rights of anyone? Of course, you can say that one can find food at other places.  But then, why should one be forced to look for food in other places? And this is in Ipoh, not some 90% Muslim dominated area. Sign of things to come?

If non-Muslim entrepreneurs are given opportunities to take up a booth or two at the hospital at reasonable price,  I think can avoid this issue.  The Muslim operators would have difficulty running business on fasting month since majority (let’s say 60%) of their customers won’t be around.

Malaysia Nanban reported that many non-Muslims who visited the Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital in Ipoh were shocked to find the canteen closed temporarily for the current fasting month.

Tronoh state assemblyman V. Sivakumar who visited the hospital yesterday said the closure of the canteen had affected the non-Muslims, especially the in-patients, visitors and employees of the hospital, as they had to look for food elsewhere.

The hospital’s management, he said, must also cater to the needs of other races.

religions with divine revelation

I’m curious, is there only one religion that involves “divine revelation that is complete and encompasses all aspects of human life”? A bit confused after reading the article in MK. Maybe MK got it all wrong? The other parts are clear to me, just the “one religion” is confusing.

Muslims in this country can accept the good elements in other religions but cannot admit that all other religions are the same as Islam as it is different, says former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

According to Abdullah, who is chairman of the Malaysia Institute of Islamic Understanding (Ikim), Islam is different from other religions in the world as it involves divine revelation that is complete and it encompasses all aspects of human life.

Abdullah said this in the text of his speech which was read out by Ikim director-general Nik Mustapha Nik Hasan at the opening of a seminar on the Quran and religious pluralism with the theme, ‘Lessons from the past, current issues and future direction’.

However, he said, in administering the country, the welfare of the people of other religions should not be neglected and that they be given the space in practising their religions in peace.

“Besides extending goodwill which is enjoined by Islam, it is also incumbent upon us as Muslims to keep our promises made, including with the people of other religions,” he said.

Abdullah said all issues involving religion in Malaysia must be resolved justly and in a spirit of mutual respect.

I do receive comments from readers asking about converting back to original religion after making hasty/ill-advised decision earlier to convert out. Well, I guess one way is to seek asylum in foreign country, if you got the cash to go there. But if you don’t even have a proper birth certificate or MyKad, can’t use this option.

China Press reported that 55 Malaysians sought asylum in Britain last year, citing reasons which touched on their religion, sexual orientation and political freedom.

Five of them said that they were seeking religious freedom, six said they wanted to escape prosecution for being homosexuals while three sought political asylum.

Wonder why no masterplan. Should have one right? Then there won’t be inconsistent decision or flip-flops.  Or is it different rules for lesser citizens? Without proper legislation it will also be firefighting activity  – solving problems instead of avoiding creating problems in the first place.

A DEVELOPER must allocate places of worship for non-Muslims for housing projects involving more than 40ha under the Selangor government policy.

State Health, Plantation Workers, Poverty and Caring Government committee chairman Dr A. Xavier Jeyakumar said the developer had to abide by the rules after the project plan for a housing project was sent to the local council for approval.

He said there was no masterplan for the building of non-Muslim places of worship like Buddhist and Hindu temples, tokong, churches andgurdwara.

“However, from time to time, the state will monitor and resolve the situation on these places of worship,” said Dr Xavier.

He said there was also discussion on the status of the land at the places of worship.

“From 2008 to now, the state has allocated 90 non-Muslim places of worship covering 127.76ha — tokong (114.6ha), temples (7.67ha), churches (4.74ha) and gurdawara (0.75ha),” said Dr Xavier.

The state also approved a temporary building permit for a temple in Section 23, Shah Alam in October last year.

Dr Xavier was responsing to a question by Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei (PR-Sri Muda) at the Selangor state assembly on the status on the non-Muslim places of worship.

Meanwhile, the state government reiterated that the 30% sales quota for each housing development and 7% discount for houses for bumiputras will remain and not be abolished.

State Housing, Building Management and Squatters committee chairman Iskandar Abdul Samad said the quota and discount would ensure that people staying in Selangor would be able to afford houses in the state.

“Besides the 7% bumiputra discount on homes, a 10% bumiputra discount is also given on commercial and industrial plots.

“With the discounts, the bumiputra buyers can afford to own land and houses.

On a rumour that the state will abolish the 30% sales quota and the 7% discount, Iskandar said it was not true.

Iskandar was responding to a question by Datuk Marsum Paing (BN-Dengkil) on whether the state wanted to abolish the 30% quota and 7% bumiputra discount on houses.

The Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry Tuesday approved three more sites to be developed as places of worship or gurdwaras for the Sikh community.

Letters of approval reserving government land for the three gurdwaras, namely in Sungai Besi, Jalan Padang Merbok and Cheras, were presented to the recipients by the minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

Nong Chik said the approval would also prevent the sites from being misused for other purposes.

“The move is in line with the government’s policy of ensuring that non-Muslims can carry out their religious activities in comfort and an orderly manner,” he told reporters, here Tuesday.
He said to date, 11 lots involving 2.23 hectares (5.58 acres) for gurdwaras had been approved for the Federal Territory. – BERNAMA
