I do read his articles in the Star at times – he writes about disability issues and also reviews worldwide radio channels. Hope that Mr Anthony will not only represent the disabled people, but all Malaysians. At the same time, he should impress on other councilors to consider the plight of the disabled people as well.

All the best to you sir!

Disable councillor: It’s a calling

Wheelchair-bound Anthony Thanasayan has been at the forefront of advocating the rights of the disabled for the past decade and local authorities have regularly been the brunt of his criticism. So it was no surprise when he describes his recent appointment as one of Petaling Jaya’s 24 city councillor as “a calling”. “This is a chance given to me to make a difference, so to me it is a calling from God to take up the position,” said Anthony, who heads the Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association.

And even before he was officially made a councillor, Anthony had already came across a MBPJ officer who would use some lessons in sensitivity when dealing with the disabled.

Yesterday, he had a discomforting call from the officer who wanted Anthony to fill up certain paperwork pertaining to his appointment as a councillor. “The office called me and asked me to come over to the MBPJ office immediately to pick up the forms and to submit a photo but how can they expect me to show up whenever they like knowing my condition,” lamented Anthony. “When they thought of hiring a disabled person they must have been prepared to make changes necessary to accommodate to the needs of the disabled persons,” he reiterated.

Geared for change

The episode with the MBPJ officer reminded Anthony that he has an uphill task ahead of him, but the plucky activist believes that he is ready to face any challenges to champion the rights of the disabled in the council. “I’m happy I was given the opportunity, as this is a chance for a disabled person to speak for the disabled rather than having an able-bodied person to voice our concerns,” he said.

“We (the disabled) believe that we must be apart of any decisions made for us. There is an international saying among us disabled – ‘nothing about us without us’. Therefore, I’m happy I’ll be apart of the decision-making process,” he added.

Anthony said his first agenda was to propose for specials queues and parking lots for the disabled and elderly as these amenities are not available at all avenues in Petaling Jaya.  “The previous government promised us many things but nothing really materialised. I feel like I’m under house arrest because I’m not able to go to the neighbourhood grocery shop because it is not disable friendly,” he said.

“All this has to change and I’ll speak up for it until it does. And I won’t hesitate to quit, if I don’t see anything materialising,” he stressed.

Pas Youth sent away with tails between its leg

Well, we can always trust PAS to create problem for the triumvirate. DAP and PKR are more liberal and encompass general Malaysian values, while PAS only represents a section of the society.

This time, PAS Youth opposed the selection of performers for Sultan of Selangor Cup (annual football match between Selangor and Singapore) and threatened to organise a demonstration. The organisers chose Ella and Mas Idayu. I heard of Ella, but not the other singer, so don’t ask me. You can ask PAS since these guys said the ladies dress sexily and danced provocatively (like those middle east belly dancers?). I guess that depends on the eye of the beholder (PAS Youth may have some eyesight problems) since other Malaysians don’t seem to complain.

Their protest received condemnation from practically everyone. The singers gave them an earful.

Are they saying that if all artistes were banned from performing on stage, social illnesses would be eradicated?

The Sultan saw it fit to reply in anger. He said their action was “trivial”. My, is that an insult or what! All this would have made PAS to sweat.

The public  meanwhile, laughed at this jokers.

Khalil, alarmed at the controversy, plans to arrange meeting between PAS youth and the palace.

And today’s breaking news says that PAS dropped its plan to protest. It would only send a letter to the organisers.

Please wake up PAS. You are in Selangor, not middle east.

Selangor free water not free?

Service charge Rm6???? What the hell is that?

Menteri Besar Khalil says (The Star):

“If the usage is less than 20 cu m or RM11.40, he (the consumer) does not have to pay the water charges but he has to pay a RM6 service charge,

I never seen such charge before in my bill. Is this pulling wool over our eyes? Why announce free, when its actually not so. Free means no need to pay. Are they too stupid to understand this simple thing? Don’t be like those jokers who made the “free schooling” statement la.

Pakatan should be transparent announce how much they will subside monthly. Why Syabas need to collect RM6 when KDEB is supposed to pay on behalf of the rakyat.

We can use free water up to RM11.40, but need to pay RM6. Meaning, we actually can benefit RM5.40 only. So, should I collect this amount of water and sell it for a discounted price of RM4 or RM5?

Well, i think the community should learn from illegal immigrants on how they go their PR and other documents. Interested parties who are concerned for the community can set up a fund to pay for such documents. I’m sure there are many syndicates who can help 🙂 Depending on the relevant agencies will take forever, so might as well look for alternative avenues. The foreigners are enjoying more benefit due to their “initiatives”. Why not learn from them?

Remember just before election, MIC Youth hijacked an independent group’s (Makkal Sakthi?) programme and went around the nation to register Indians without identity documents? Wonder what happened to those applications. Wait for next election campaign is it?

Since Pakatan had taken over Selangor, Perak, Penang and Kedah, all states with high number of Indians, perhaps they should re-initiate action to get people without proper identification documents registered. Even when MIC Youth held the program in Klang, many people from other races also turned up. So, this is a common problem among the poor and rural inhabitants.

School kids expelled for not having birth certs

Human rights and social welfare groups are increasingly concerned that up to 40,000 ‘paperless’ Indian Malaysian children in Selangor may be deprived of an education.

Last year, 13 students who failed to produce their birth certificates were expelled from their Tamil primary school – the SRJK (T) Vallambrosa in Kapar. » Read more: Kids without birth cert expelled from tamil schools

Free Water in Selangor

I thought Khalil’s plan will fall flat, especially when Syabas said they could not come to an agreement regarding the payment period. However, in the last one day, the Selangor government, through Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) has managed to successfully negotiate a longer payment period.

Even though the free water plan is starting from June 16 and will be reflected from next month’s bill onwards, nonetheless its been successfully pulled off by Pakatan government. But for how long it can be sustained is a question mark. The subsidy is expected to cost RM1.1 million per month for 20 cubic metre per household (according to Malaysiakini). However, NST reports that its going to cost a whopping RM10.8 million per month! The Star provided its own figure of RM1.8 million per month. Looks like 3 parties with three different figures.

There are arguments that providing free water will make people more wasteful and less concerned about conserving water. Anything free won’t be appreciated easily.

What do you think?
