KLANG: Sungai Pinang state assemblyman Teng Chang Khim wants to push a bill that would require all selected representatives and appointed politicians in Selangor to declare their family assets. 

He has submitted a notice to the State Secretary for a motion to table the proposed Declaration of Family Income and Asset Bill 2007 to make this compulsory. 

Teng said the proposed Bill would cover the mentri besar, state executive councillors, state assemblymen, state senators and local government councillors as well as their spouses. 

The declaration, he said, would then have to be gazetted and made public, adding that anyone with information on assets or income that had not been declared could report to the authorities. 

He said the notice was submitted on Nov 5, giving the state government ample time to discuss it at the state executive council meeting and to decide if it would be tabled at the next state assembly sitting, which begins on Nov 19. 

“The need to make it compulsory for all politicians to declare their income and assets has been discussed for a long time and it is time to finally implement it," he told a press conference here on Wednesday. 

Under the proposal, anyone making a fraudulent declaration would face a minimum jail term of one year and one day or a minimum fine of RM3,000 which is enough to make an assemblyman lose his seat.

Happy Deepavali!

I know its kind of late, anyway, to all Hindus readers, belated Deepavali naalvalthukal (Happy Deepavali)! May the spark of godliness in us remove veils of ignorance and ego in us. Let us strive to illuminate our lives and also of those around us.

As with most Hindu families, the eve was spent having prayers for the demised.

On Deepavali day, we were at my parents house for prayer, followed by visit to Then’s hometown. The next few days were spent visiting relatives around Klang Valley.

One of the conversation topic wherever we went was the temple demolition at Padang Jawa which was not highlighted in media, except in tamil papers for the first few days. Most of the people I met were extremely unhappy about the issue, and condemned Selangor government and MIC for this. I think BN have lot of salvage work to do in the coming elections.

Perak never rejected application for temple land titles

Apply for land titles, temples told MIC: State has never rejected applications

Perak MIC chairman Datuk G. Rajoo said he was confident the state government would not reject their applications, as it had not done so before. 

“Since 2000, the state has issued land titles to 38 temples,” he told reporters at his Deepavali open house in Ipoh recently. 

His comments came following the demolition of a temple in Shah Alam by the Selangor Government on Oct 30 that sparked off a controversy. 

On the 38 temples issued land titles, Rajoo said, some had been allowed to remain in their current location while others were given alternative plots of between 0.404ha and 0.808ha. 

“The state government also gives an RM300,000 annual allocation for the maintenance of the legalised temples,” he said. 

Despite this, he said, there were still so many illegal Hindu temples in Perak. 

“This is because the temple committees are not willing to move from their current locations. They do not apply for land titles as they may be asked to relocate to a new spot,” he said. 

He added that in Ipoh alone, at least 400 Hindu temples were squatting illegally on government land. 

“Still, Perak has never demolished temples to make way for development,” he said, adding that with negotiations, such problems could be resolved amicably. 

“However, we would like to urge all temple committees to legalise their temples and apply for the grants. 

“They must register their details with the Malaysia Hindu Sangam and their applications can be sent to the state government through the Perak MIC,” he said. 

Earlier at the open house, Rajoo donated RM5,000 each to six orphanages in Ipoh.

shah alam temple issue is administrative weakness ?

I hope to see some accountability over these administrative weaknesses. Khir Toyo and Shah Alam mayor must take responsibility over this "weakness". They must apologise and resign. We have gone so long without any accountability from our leaders and lots of passing the buck acts. The rot must stop here. More on this later.
 
 
Samy: Demolished temple issue resolved
KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of the Hindu temple in Shah Alam that was demolished has been resolved, with the Selangor state government allocating a plot of land for the temple's relocation. 

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the solution was reached after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi directed him and Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo to sit down and resolve the matter. 

"Earth work for the temple relocation has begun," Samy Vellu told newsmen at the Putra World Trade Centre on Wednesday after the presidential address at the Umno general assembly. 

Samy Vellu, who is Works Minister, stressed that the MIC had never looked at the temple demolition issue as a religious problem but more as an administrative weakness. 

"Only I as the president had voiced my view on the matter to the Prime Minister and Mentri Besar," he said. 

"I have spoken to the Prime Minister and I have told him that we will all celebrate Deepavali," he said, adding that he would also attend the national-level Deepavali celebrations in Brickfields on Nov 11.

KUALA LUMPUR: "We are hurt. That's all I am going to say. Hurt is hurt."

This was the reaction from MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu yesterday on the demolition of a 36-year-old Hindu temple in Shah Alam by the Selangor government. Samy Vellu said he was so hurt by the state government's action that MIC almost cancelled all its Deepavali open houses as a mark of respect to all Hindus. The MIC had issued a statement on Monday announcing that all open houses by MPs and state assemblymen would be cancelled, but the notice was retracted hours later.

Samy Vellu expressed displeasure at the handling of the temple issue at Kampung Karuppiah, Padang Jawa, by the authorities, but said he was ready to move on. "There are discussions and meetings going on between MIC and the state government. "It is our hope that in the future, something like this will never happen," he said after presenting the Jalur Gemilang to 15 youths who will represent Malaysia in the 39th World Skills Competition in Shizuoka, Japan.

"For us (MIC), we are part of the government. We want to solve problems, not fight with the government." Samy Vellu said the state government had allocated a 10,000 square feet land in Shah Alam for the temple to be rebuilt. "The menteri besar has given his word that they will help to rebuild the temple." Samy Vellu also assured Hindus that the statues of deities had been removed safely.

He blasted a group of residents in Padang Jaya who are adamant in rebuilding the temple at the original site. Samy Vellu said he was aware that many are unhappy with the demolition of the temple. "I am also unhappy and have expressed this point to the cabinet and to the council of menteris besar and chief ministers."

 
In a function on Monday in "Little India" in Jalan Tengku Kelana, Klang, Samy Vellu said he would be calling for a meeting of all committees of temples built on private or government land in Selangor. "This is to help resolve the problem of temporary temples, which do not have their own land and are not registered," he said. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had decided that in future, issues relating to temples must be dealt with by the menteri besar and himself.
