Samy removes Kuala SelangorÂ’s Thirumoorthy

IJOK: Kuala Selangor MIC division chief P. Thirumoorthy, who threatened to resign if he was not chosen as the Barisan NasionalÂ’s candidate for the Ijok by-election, has been replaced. 

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the party had already appointed a new division chief and replaced six of the 33 branch chairmen who supported Thirumoorthy. 

He declined to comment further. 

Meanwhile, Thirumoorthy said he considered himself out of the party following the announcement of the by-election candidate here yesterday. 

“IÂ’m leaving,” he said.  

When asked whether he had tendered a resignation letter, he said: “There is no need for me to tender a resignation letter because Samy Vellu had said he did want to see me and has expelled me already.”  

Thirumoorthy also claimed that 34 out 76 Kuala Selangor MIC branch chiefs would be leaving with him.  

“They will inform the headquarters soon,” he said.  

On Sunday, Thirumoorthy threatened to resign if he was not chosen and Samy Vellu immediately slammed him, calling him a traitor.  

In a statement faxed to the press last evening, Thirumoorthy said he was saddened being labelled a traitor when he had been loyal to the party president for the last 27 years.  

“This is a cruel accusation, which hurts me and the Ijok voters,” he said. 

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Dr Khir Toyo announced yesterday that Tanjung Karang MIC division secretary K. Parthiban would be Barisan’s candidate for the by-election. 

The Ijok state seat became vacant after incumbent K. Sivalingam died on April 4. 

Thirumoothy claimed that Samy Vellu had sent Sivalingam, who was facing a court case then, to Ijok in 1990 and added that Sivalingam would have lost the election if not for him, a division secretary then, who had worked day and night to ensure SivalingamÂ’s victory.

Email to friend Print article KUALA SELANGOR, MON.: A former Co-Academic officer at the Kuala Selangor District Education Office, K. Parthiban, 38, was chosen as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the by-election for the Ijok state constituency today.
Selangor BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, who is also Selangor Menteri Besar, made the announcement in front of about 3,000 BN supporters at Dewan Harmoni, Batang Berjuntai, here this afternoon.
All those present in the hall gave a loud applause to demonstrate their solid support to Parthiban as soon as he was announced as the candidate at 5.20pm. The event was broadcast live on TV over RTM 1.
Among those present were MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, his deputy Datuk G. Palanivel, MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib.
In his speech shortly after he was introduced by Dr Mohamad Khir, Parthiban promised the BN supporters and voters in the Ijok state constituency that he would continue the tradition of the BN to champion the cause of the people regardless of race or religion. “I will ensure that the BN retains the seat and I appeal to you all to help me (do it),” he said.
He also pledged to continue implementation of all the current and future development programmes by the government.
Born on Oct 6, 1968 in Ladang Raja Musa, Kuala Selangor, Parthiban, who is also the secretary of the MIC Tanjung Karang division and a former Co-Academic Officer at the Kuala Selangor District Education Office, holds key positions in several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including as president of the Council of the Federation of Kuala Selangor District Youth Associations.
He is also chairman of the Tanjung Karang Hindu Youth Organisation (HYO) and the Ladang Raja Musa Rukun Tetangga sector and a former secretary of the Kuala Selangor Tamil Youth Club from 1990 to 2001.
Parthiban has a Masters in Education Management from the University of Malaya and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from the same university.
He joined MIC in 1989 and among the key political posts he held were as special officer to the Tanjung Karang Member of Parliament, personal representative of the Permatang Assemblyman for the Indian community, a committee member of the Tanjung Karang Barisan Nasional and head of the Kampung Bukit Belimbing MIC branch.
Parthiban is also a member of the Kuala Selangor District Council.

Email to friend Print article KUALA LUMPUR, MON.: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today said that all members of Barisan Nasional (BN) components, especially the MIC, must accept and fully support the candidate nominated to defend the Ijok state seat.
The deputy prime minister, who is also the BN deputy chairman, said the decision of whom would be nominated was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after a deep scrutiny.
“The important thing is the decision that we make on the candidate is to select one who is thought to be the most suitable to ensure victory for the BN. So, as party members, we have to accept the decision. That’s the meaning of us serving the party and abiding by the party’s principles,” he told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the Malaysian Smart School International Conference here.
He was commenting on a threat by Kuala Selangor MIC chief P.
Thirumoorthy to resign from the post if he was not named as the BN candidate for the Ijok by-election. The seat fell vacant following the death of Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, of the MIC in Chennai, India, on April 4. The Election Commission has set Thursday for nomination and April 28 for polling in the event of a contest.
“During elections, we cannot do something like that,” Najib said of Thirumoorthy’s threat.
On the BN candidate for the by-election, he said: “I want the candidate that we will announce today to be a candidate for all races in Ijok. We’ve decided that in this constituency, the MIC will contest but we all know that this constituency has many Malay and also Chinese voters besides Indian voters.
“So, our candidate must be one who will serve the interests of all races and is willing to go down to the field and meet all groups in Ijok,” he said.
Najib also said he did not want the selection of the candidate to be turned into a racial issue by the opposition.
“I know the opposition will try to exploit it,” he said.
He also advised voters not to look at the race of the candidate, but cast their votes based on the success achieved by the party and government.

Parthiban, a co-curriculum academic officer with the Kuala Selangor District Education Office, was named the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Ijok by-election today. After Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo announced his candidacy, Parthiban, 38, made this appeal to BN component party members: “Tolonglah saya (Please help me).”
Parthiban, a teacher by profession, hails from Ladang Raja Musa in Kuala Selangor. He holds a Masters in Education from Universiti Malaya and a Bachelor of Science degree from the same institution.
He is also a Kuala Selangor district councillor, the Tanjung Karang MP’s special officer, Tanjung Karang MIC division secretary and Kampung Bukit Belimbing MIC branch head, and a panel member of the Kuala Selangor Juvenile Court.
Met after the announcement, he said he found out about his candidacy from deputy MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel last Thursday.
He said: “I’m familiar with the area and I’m prepared to work for the community. I’m also prepared to face my opponent.”
He said he would try his best to win the seat and go against the Parti Keadilan Rakyat candidate, who is expected to be named tonight.
Asked about a statement by Kuala Selangor MIC division chairman P. Thirumoorthy on Sunday that the 35 branches in the division wanted a candidate from within its ranks, Parthiban declined comment.
Thirumoorthy had said the 4,200 party members in the branches would reconsider their position in the party if the leadership did not revise the choice of candidate. They had heard that it was an “outsider.”
Asked what his immediate plans were and the areas he felt needed the most attention, Parthiban said he did not know yet, and that he would seek guidance from the party president.
However, he said, among the problems which needed attention were basic facilities like roads and electricity supply.
Mohd Khir said he would ensure Partiban worked hard for the community.
He said all BN component parties would work together to ensure another by-election victory for the BN as in Machap, Batu Talam and Pengkalan Pasir.
Dewan Harmoni, where the announcement was held, was packed with party members. There were a lot of flies which posed a nuisance.
When a reporter remarked about this, Parthiban quipped that this was because of a chicken-processing factory nearby which however, had had its licence revoked to overcome the problem.

BATANG BERJUNTAI: The MIC Kuala Selangor division chief and 33 branch heads aligned to him have threatened to resign following a disagreement over the party’s candidate for the Ijok by-election.
Division leader P. Thirumoorthy, 55, said he was disappointed that party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had overlooked him for the seat despite his many years of service in the MIC.
“I have been in the party for more than 30 years and the grassroots want me to contest.
“If I am the candidate, there is no need to campaign. We will surely win as I know the people here,” he said at a press conference.
The MIC candidate for the seat will be officially announced today about 5pm in Ijok. It is understood that the candidate will be 38-year-old K. Parthiban, who is Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar’s special officer in his Tanjung Karang parliamentary constituency.
Thirumoorthy said he would only resign from his division post but remain as a party member.
“I am a loyal supporter of Samy Vellu and will always work for the party. However, the feelings of the grassroots here are very strong. They never consulted us before deciding on the candidate.”
He wanted the party leadership to reconsider the decision on the candidate.
Samy Vellu, who was at the MIC service centre just 100 metres away, said the choice of the candidate was up to the party president.
“If he wants to leave, he can do so and I don’t feel threatened about this.”
He also refuted Thirumoorthy’s claims of support in many branches, saying he was the division chief only because he had been saved by the party president from the division’s in-fighting.

Former teacher Parthiban, who is single, is currently a co-academic officer at the Kuala Selangor district education department.
He was born in Ladang Raja Musa, Kuala Selangor, and has a Master’s in Education from Universiti Malaya.
