Alamak! Looks like Minister Nazri had unwittingly proven what parents and disgruntled Malaysians suspected all along. 10% quota allocation for normal Malaysians for PSD scholarships all this while. He clarified that 7282 students were shortlisted from 15220 (previously, PSD director gave a rough estimate of 7500 out of 15000 students).

PSD claims cream of crop selected for scholarship
May 18th, 2008After Dr S.Subra suggested automatic scholarships, and many disgruntled SPM achievers gathered at Perak and Selangor, PSD comes out with explanation. How nice if this explanation is given earlier. It would answer many questions.
Now it is revealed that minimum of 13A1s is the cutoff point for academic criteria. In others, all the 140 students who complained earlier don’t stand a chance. Not qualified la! PSD should make the criteria public as soon as the closing date for application is reached. This will ensure students and parents would not wait anxiously and can make alternative plans. In fact, data on number of A1 achievers should be read from MES and matched with the number of scholarships available. In this way, it is possible to know how many A1s is needed to qualify for academic criteria. Probably, if 2000 places are available, PSD can pick the top 4000 or 5000, and do their shortlisting from there. » Read more: PSD claims cream of crop selected for scholarship
MIC unhappy only 34 offered JPA scholarships
May 15th, 2008We read yesterday about Kamine Devi who scored 10A1s not being offered anything by PSD (JPA). She should also consider registering an appeal via MIC since they have a representative in cabinet. The community has no choice but to rely on MIC in this case because of the race based politics.
As Samy suggests, it should be an automatic offer for students who fulfill certain criteria – certain number of As and/or family income. The should be a system integration between MES and JPA so that details of students can be linked. This will avoid cases of not being able to apply online, loss of data, incomplete/invalid application, incorrect data entry etc., and most importantly ensure no deserving students are left out. We are sick and tired of reading in the papers, year after year, students begging for scholarship. Simple thing also cannot solve.
Imagine only 34 get scholarship, out of possibly 2000++ places. Not even 5%, but about 2% only! And already have 194 appeals.
Let’s wait for MCA to reveal the numbers. » Read more: MIC unhappy only 34 offered JPA scholarships
nearly 12 percent normal malaysians in MRSM
May 14th, 20083094/26251 = 11.79%, which is more than the allocated 1% places in MRSM. A better reporting would be breakdown in terms of (i) normal/privileged Malaysians and their grade levels; (ii) races and their grade levels; (iii) gender and their grade levels.
A total of 3,094 non-bumiputera students are studying at 40 Mara Junior Science (MRSM) colleges throughout the country, Entrepreneur & Co-operative Development Minister Datuk Noh Omar said. He said MRSM colleges reserved 10% of their places for qualified non-bumiputera youths.
“For this year, we received 334 applications from non-bumiputeras to go into Form 1 at MRSM, of which 172 were accepted.
“Overall there are now 3,094 non-bumiputera students out of the total of 26,251 students in MRSM colleges nationwide,” he told Roslan Shaharum (PAS-Bukit Gantang).
Devendran urges youths to make use of MIC
May 10th, 2008Interestingly, TAR and UTAR (MCA-affiliated) have more than 90% chinese students. How about AIMST and TAFE?
Its a good start to highlight what MIC can offer, but I hope its more than announcing there are colleges and universities. Affordable fees and effort to provide loans and scholarships are important as well. Of course quality of education goes without saying. » Read more: Devendran urges youths to make use of MIC
