180 in Taman Suria get CFs after 15-year wait
KUALA SELANGOR: About 1,000 residents of Taman Suria here received their certificate of fitness (CF) for the 180 houses in the estate after waiting for 15 years.
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu also announced that the flood problems faced by the residents in the housing estate the past five years were also being tackled with the expansion and deepening of the drain near the area.
Hundreds of residents of various races had gathered to greet Samy Vellu, who is Works Minister, and the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Ijok by-election, K. Parthiban, 38, yesterday.
The residents, 90% of whom comprise the Indian community, also expressed their appreciation to the BN Government for looking into the problem caused by smoke emitted from a glove factory nearby.
Samy Vellu said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment had asked the factory to install an appropriate device to overcome the smoke pollution.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said the opposition was being narrow-minded and had deliberately confused the voters in Ijok by saying that Muslims could not vote for non-Muslims.
“Muslims can vote for anyone for cooperation, as was practised since the time of the Prophet,” he said.
“We have to be fair to anyone even if they are of a different religion and even if we have to fight a war for them, we would do so because in Islam, we have to take care of the non-Muslims who can cooperate with the Muslims,” he said after handing over sponsored Science and Mathematics workbooks to schools in Ijok. – Bernama.

KUALA SELANGOR: When will Barisan Nasional’s K. Parthiban get hitched?
Parthiban, 38, the coalition’s candidate in the Ijok by-election, laughed when asked about this.
“I haven’t found my match yet. Can you help me? If there is someone special, I will get married but I don’t have a girlfriend yet,” he said.
Parthiban, who is Tanjung Karang MIC secretary, said he “forgot” about looking for his Miss Right due to work commitment and family obligations – he became the breadwinner after his parents died.
Mingling with the locals: Parthiban (centre) talking with Kg Ijok resident Atom Arfis, 19, as he stops by a fruit stall during his visit to a night market in Ijok yesterday. “It’s not that I’m choosy but I just don’t have the time,” he said.
Parthiban said life was difficult when his father, an estate worker, died when he was in Form Six. His mother died seven years later.
“It was only after I completed my studies at the Seri Kota Teachers College in 1994 and accepted an offer to teach at the Ghandiji Tamil Primary School in Tanjung Karang that life became slightly better for me and my four siblings.
“Life was not easy though because, at times, we still had to go on empty stomachs. I gave tuition classes to earn extra income,” he said.
His sacrifices have been worthwhile.
One sister is now an accountant while two other sisters are pursuing medical studies. The youngest, a brother, is a contractor.
Parthiban will face Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, 61, in a straight fight in the by-election, which is being held following the death of Barisan’s Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4. Polling is on April 28. – Bernama

Email to friend Print article KUALA LUMPUR, MON.: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today said that all members of Barisan Nasional (BN) components, especially the MIC, must accept and fully support the candidate nominated to defend the Ijok state seat.
The deputy prime minister, who is also the BN deputy chairman, said the decision of whom would be nominated was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after a deep scrutiny.
“The important thing is the decision that we make on the candidate is to select one who is thought to be the most suitable to ensure victory for the BN. So, as party members, we have to accept the decision. That’s the meaning of us serving the party and abiding by the party’s principles,” he told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the Malaysian Smart School International Conference here.
He was commenting on a threat by Kuala Selangor MIC chief P.
Thirumoorthy to resign from the post if he was not named as the BN candidate for the Ijok by-election. The seat fell vacant following the death of Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, of the MIC in Chennai, India, on April 4. The Election Commission has set Thursday for nomination and April 28 for polling in the event of a contest.
“During elections, we cannot do something like that,” Najib said of Thirumoorthy’s threat.
On the BN candidate for the by-election, he said: “I want the candidate that we will announce today to be a candidate for all races in Ijok. We’ve decided that in this constituency, the MIC will contest but we all know that this constituency has many Malay and also Chinese voters besides Indian voters.
“So, our candidate must be one who will serve the interests of all races and is willing to go down to the field and meet all groups in Ijok,” he said.
Najib also said he did not want the selection of the candidate to be turned into a racial issue by the opposition.
“I know the opposition will try to exploit it,” he said.
He also advised voters not to look at the race of the candidate, but cast their votes based on the success achieved by the party and government.

SEREMBAN: The Barisan Nasional candidate for the Ijok by-election has already been approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said. He said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, who is state Barisan chairman, would announce the name of the candidate at an appropriate time. “I called the Prime Minister and submitted one name at 4pm. He has approved it,” he told reporters before opening the Negri Sembilan MIC state convention here yesterday. On whether the candidate was a local, Samy Vellu said: “I cannot say anything and there are no further details. “You will all have to wait for the announcement by the Selangor mentri besar.” Asked whether the chosen candidate was a young or veteran politician, Samy Vellu said: “We don’t give to veterans anymore”. He said the person named was not among the 23 candidates who had applied to be considered. “Although 23 had applied, I submitted only one name to the Prime Minister after discussions with Dr Khir Toyo on Tuesday,” he said. Speculations are rife that Selangor MIC Youth chief S. Murugesan, a lawyer, is the likely candidate. Murugesan, 40, contested on his own accord and won one of the two Youth seats in the MIC’s Central Working Committee last year after a fallout with MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran. The Ijok by-election is being held following the death of state assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam in Chennai on April 4. Nominations have been fixed for April 19 with polling scheduled on April 28 if there is a contest.

4.9mil yet to register as voters

KUALA LUMPUR: There are 4.9 million eligible Malaysians who have not registered as voters.
Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said these people were denying themselves the right to elect their leaders.
“Malaysians like to do things at the last minute – even for registering as voters. But they forget that there is a three-month period for their names to be validated into the electoral roll.
“When their names are not in the electoral roll in time for an election, they will blame the EC for not providing enough facilities and venues for them to register themselves.
“This happens every election,” he said during the launch of the nationwide campaign by the Malaysia National Sikh Movement (Gerak Sikh) to register voters.
Wan Ahmad said the EC had done everything to make it easy for people to register as voters, including establishing over 640 counters at post offices nationwide.
“They can walk in and register in 15 minutes. But while people don’t mind queuing up to buy stamps, they complain of having to queue up at the EC counters,” he said.
There are 10.3 million registered Malaysian voters.
As at December 2006, Selangor had the highest number of eligible people yet to register as voters, followed by Sarawak (450,000), Johor (400,000) and Perak (375,000).
Seventy per cent of these people are between the ages of 21 and 35.
Wan Ahmad said the campaign by GerakSikh was the first time a non-governmental organisation was working with the EC to mobilise people to register as voters.
Under the campaign, GerakSikh would organise the registration of voters at various venues, with the EC providing mobile units.
