SJKT Ladang Bukit Jalil missing from KL City Plan

Remember SJKT Ladang Bukit Jalil? It is the school that is being relocated to a cemetery area. It has the infamous publicity of being flooded 3 times in a month. Well, looks like its not on the KL Draft City Plan 2020 ! I don’t suppose the idea to temporarily house the school in ground floor of the flats has anything to do with its disappearance?

Chin, who paid RM150 for the two-volume draft plan, complained that there are mistakes in it. He pointed out that SJK (T) Ladang Bukit Jalil school and the detention camp are not included in the plan.

Education Ministry to draw mini blueprint

Hmm…Education Minister can ask others about their plans, but own ministry now only  “WOULD” draw up a special “MINI-blueprint”. Reminds me of the a 50 years old gigantic pot calling the 100-days old small kettle black.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the ministry would draw up a special “mini-blueprint” focusing on the development of various types of schools receiving capital grants. This, he said, would be incorporated into the main blueprint to form a complete masterplan and would ensure that the schools receive the same attention as national schools.

“This shows how much we value Chinese schools, Tamil schools, mission schools and religious schools. “This is part of comprehensive measures my ministry is taking to help all students, regardless of what type of school they come from,” he said.

… According to Hishammuddin, the mini-blueprint will address the welfare and development needs of the schools. Aspects such as the development of basic facilities, allocation of land for building new schools, upgrading of infrastructure and other financial needs will be looked into.

Perhaps that’s what Samy meant when he announced recently that Education Ministry “agreed in principle” that all Tamil schools will be converted to fully-aided status. Meanwhile, PPP’s Deputy Minister Murugiah is busy talking about Tamil Schools Fund. What is actually happening? Can these two parties sit down and talk first before making further announcements that may confuse the community?

PPP plans fund for tamil schools

About three weeks back, Murugiah talked on creating a foundation called Tamil Schools Foundation. Now he talks about setting up a fund. What I don’t understand is why need to meet Prime Minister and Education Minister if money for the fund is to be sourced from donations from public and corporate figures.

Secondly, along with proposing such funds, PPP should also focus on getting schools to be fully-aided and try not to burden the community by asking for more money.

Not only independent committee, but a transparent-based set-up – from collection to disbursement. Nowadays, nothing seemed to be independent.

BTW, will Samy allow this or continue with his “sole champion of the community” mantra?

IPOH: The People’s Progressive Party is proposing to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein that a fund for Tamil schools be set up. It suggests seeking donations from corporate figures and the Indian community.Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s department Senator T. Murugiah, who is the PPP National Youth chief, said the fund would help schools in poor condition and lacking facilities. “The fund will finance the construction of facilities in such schools, which are suffering a drop in enrolment. The lack of facilities is one reason parents refuse to send their children there.”

Murugiah said the fund would be managed by an independent committee with similar committees formed at the state level to disburse aid.
“There is no political motive for setting up the fund. Our goal is to make Tamil schools conducive for teaching and learning, whether or not the schools are located in opposition-held states.”

NLFCS willing to transfer land for Tamil Schools sake

I guess NLFCS is taking the first step to aid in conversion of partially-aided schools to full-aided status. Other plantation owners should follow suit. With the rising price of palm oil and rubber, surely a bit of corporate social responsibility is in order. Once converted, the government cannot simply wash its hands off these schools.

But why does it take NLFCS such a long time to come to this decision? Surprising that an Indian based cooperative was unable to do so earlier. Rather than spending RM5 million all this while, it could have given the land to government and helped out in other ways.

THE National Land Finance Cooperative Society (NLFCS) is willing to give land to eight Tamil schools if the Government fully supports the schools.

Tamil Nesan quoted its executive director Tan Sri K.R. Somasundram as saying that the board of directors had agreed to a proposal to transfer the land to the schools for the sake of the children’s education.

He said that currently the Government was only giving partial aid to Tamil schools as many were situated on private land.

He said it was the expectation of the Indian community that Tamil schools be fully-aided schools to enable the pupils to study in a conducive environment.

He said NLFCS had spent nearly RM5mil to maintain schools under its supervision.

Tamil schools to be made fully aided?

Well, if this becomes true, it will be a big victory for HINDRAF and makkal sakthi. They managed to achieve something even though MIC will get the name. This possibility would have not been even dreamed of by the community if MIC was still in absolute power. A good kick in the back does work wonders.

Of course, its just an agreement in principle, and Cabinet is yet to see any details yet. The implementation, if it happens, may take decades.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the Education Ministry had agreed in principle to convert all partially-aided Tamil schools into fully aided schools, the Tamil Nesan reported.

However, the Cabinet still has to endorse the decision first.

Of the total 524 Tamil schools, 322 were partially aided while the rest were fully aided.
