No support for Hindraf rally from MIC and 25 NGOs
November 24th, 2007Cancel march, urge Indian groups
KUALA LUMPUR: Community leaders from 25 leading Indian associations have backed MIC’s call for tomorrow's Hindraf march to the British High Commission to be cancelled because there are too many political, economic and social concerns at stake.
“Investors are watching us closely, and if they do not have good vibes about this country, they will shift their attention elsewhere.
“The country and its people stand to lose tremendously. If the intention is sincere, just get a few men to hand over the memorandum to the High Commission,” said Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry public relations and publicity chairman K. Ramesh.

Ramesh was one of 25 community leaders present at a press conference yesterday at the MIC office called by party information chief Datuk M. Savaranan to protest the gathering.
Saravanan said calling off the gathering was the best approach to prevent any untoward incident.
Like Ramesh, Saravanan questioned the motive behind the gathering.
“The High Commission is not even open on Sunday, so why plan the march on a rest day?” he asked.
Malaysia Hindu Sangam national central council member C.M. Kopalan said the MIC and the Government had helped to fund, build, repair as well as settle relocation and land issues for temples nationwide.
Malaysia Punjabi Chambers president Datuk Daljit Singh said the group would not support any gathering with a hidden agenda to foster ill will.
The leaders said they would advise their 500,000-odd members to steer clear of the gathering.
In Putrajaya, Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the “silent majority” should make itself heard and stand up to people with their own agenda.
He said racial and religious sentiments made for a dangerous cocktail that could spell disaster. He also cautioned Umno Youth members to remain calm.
In Kangar, Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail advised the people not to join any illegal assembly.
No support for Hindraf rally from MIC, 25 NGOs
By : K. Harinderan
| Representatives from 25 Klang Valley Indian NGOs voicing their opposition to the Hindraf rally yesterday at a press conference convened by Federal Territory MIC chairman and national information chief Datuk M. Saravanan (front row, third from left). |
KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-five Indian non-governmental organisations here deny that they will support the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) rally tomorrow.
Federal Territory MIC chairman and national information chief Datuk M. Saravanan said: "Hindraf's claims are baseless and the Indians here will not support the gathering.
"As Malaysians, we have lived in peace and street protests are not a part of our culture.
"I urge the parties to discuss and resolve the matter. History has shown that demonstrations always end in violence."
Saravanan was speaking yesterday at a press conference convened by the MIC and the NGOs, which claim to represent 500,000 Indians in the Klang Valley.
Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry vice-president for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Ramesh Kodammal, said demonstrations would affect the business community and, on a greater scale, the image of the country.
Malaysian Punjabi Chambers of Commerce and Industries president Datuk Daljit Singh Dalliwal said: "Our message is clear, we support the Barisan Nasional government and do not support any element that goes against the peace and economic viability of the country."
The Hindraf rally outside the British High Commission is in support of a class-action suit against the British government for bringing Indians to Malaya as indentured workers, for exploiting them for 150 years, and for failing to protect their rights as a minority in the Federal Constitution when independence was granted.
The group is seeking STG4 trillion (RM27.7 trillion) in damages in a suit filed in Britain on Aug 30. They plan to petition Queen Elizabeth II for a Queen's Counsel to argue their case
NST editorial condemns hindraf rally
November 23rd, 2007I think if there was no police, it would have been more peaceful. many people are complaining of roadblocks all over klang valley, which is quite unneccesary. children nearly miss SPM exams, many people turn up late for work. Why have roadblocks two working days before the event? this is not like during Bersih campaign, which the preceding Thursday was Deepavali and many took leave on Friday. Thus, it looks like the police are the one causing distress, not Hindraf, which have a good record of gatherings, unlike political parties like PAS, PKR, UMNO etc.
Publicity stunt or not, it seems important enough for NST to comment on it. Syabas to Hindraf!
I don't think its a competition with BERSIH rally since these dates were announced much earlier and one can never predict how many people will turn up eventually. Oh..the editor forgot to mention the Bar Council's march. So, BERSIH followed the lawyers?
I suppose another pathetic attempt to pull wool over one's eyes.

Editorial: Call off that rally
http://www.nst.com.my/Friday/Columns/2090881/Article/index_html
THE law is clear: no police permit, no public assembly. So the non-governmental group Hindu Rights Action Force appears prepared to break the law this weekend, declaring it will proceed with a planned rally at the British High Commission without a permit.
Ostensibly, the rally is to ask Queen Elizabeth II to appoint lawyers to represent the Indians of Malaysia in a US$4 trillion (RM 28 trillion) suit filed against Her Majesty's Government.
Already, Hindraf's suit – seeking damages of STG1 million for every Indian in Malaysia for 150 years of oppression – has been consigned to the "Odd News" bin of international coverage. To proceed with the rally this weekend, when the queen will be in Uganda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, smacks of a publicity stunt.
Surely, if Hindraf truly believed its claims have merit, it would see the process through the UK courts. Surely if it had genuine grievances, then patience, and some semblance of dignity, is really what is needed. Surely if there was really US$4 trillion in damages at stake, raising funds to cover the legal costs would be a cinch?
To gather 10,000 people to present a piece of paper in Kuala Lumpur taints the whole enterprise as frivolous. Why hold the rally? Why put thousands before police lines when its own leaders have warned of signs there are groups out to cause trouble?
No doubt that many Indians are not doing well, that an underclass, and not just of Indians, may be forming. No doubt Hindraf has the right to express its opinions in ways that do not break the law. This planned rally comes just two weeks after the Bersih demonstrations, the Pas-dominated show of strength which brought parts of the capital to a standstill, perhaps just to show it could. Civil groups should not be like children who on discovering their first swear word think it's exciting, and cool, to keep using it.
Malaysia is no dysfunctional state. The machinery of government works, excruciatingly slowly sometimes, but it is serviceable. The political process works, not painlessly but it is viable. It allows for reform and for change, through the ballot box and through dialogue.
So the country's laws are valid and should be respected – there's no such thing as "being forced" to hold an illegal assembly. Citizens cannot pick and choose which laws they find expedient to obey.

subject Hindraf meeting – a journey of facts
Hi all,
It was abt 3.30 pm yesterday (18th Nov 2007) when I moved from our UMIC
Deepavali gathering for 300 kids in Klang.
I had to move early leaving our UMIC function to be handle by other CC team
to avoid any delay to HINDRAF’s meeting in Brickfield due to roadblocks.
Pick up few frens in Kelana Jaya and we drive thru Federal Highway.
On the way we called few others to see if there were any blocks ahead near
Brickfileds, the reply was no roadblocks.
By 4.45 pm we were there in front of the hall in Brickfields. It was just 25
mins drive from Kelana Jaya.
There were only a few of them near the gate at that time, so we drive to
have a small chaya at nearby restaurant.
Walked to the hall at 5.45 pm and saw the crowd slowing coming in.
This is the 1st meeting we are going which organized by HINDRAF to seek more
info and as well to show support to them.
There were few people giving away form to pen down support sign for the UK
case.
The mix crowd of old and young, man and woman soon filled the hall and
around 6.45 pm the hall was almost full.
Sharp at 7.00 pm, the 1st speaker, Mr Mano introduce himself and talked
about fundamental discrimination of right happening in Malaysia towards
Indians.
This followed by Mr Genga and Mr Wathya on the current situation and support
on the suit.
The whole atmosphere in the hall was very vibrating as the crowd claps for
every point made by the speakers.
The crowd also echoes with high spirit support with clear loud voices.
He even called the people not to worry to the police presence outside as it
is LEGAL and PERMIT APPROVED gathering.
There were a lot of things and facts shares in this gathering which needs to
be known by all of us.
This is must attend meeting by every Indian in Malaysia regardless of age,
religion, education or status as long as they are Malaysian Indians.
This group of lawyers from Mr. Mano, Mr Genga, Mr Waytha, Mr Uthaya and Mr
Rao has put the community above all to serve them with high dedication.
Their speech full of facts on
* the reason and the way the Indian were brought into Malaysia
* the promises given by the British before independence
* The suffering and pain by the Indians here under British colonial
* the contribution and glory made by our Indian towards British
* the dirty ways of the current government cleaning Indian history and
icons
* the discriminations by umno lead government in last 50 years
* the right that every Malaysia Indian have in law and constitution
* the wrongdoing by the PM as the government leader to save Indian as
whole.
And the most important thing was the reason why the suit was filed against
the UK and how the Reid commission failed the Malaysian Indians !!
This information shared was the most crucial and interesting parts.
I have to salute to this team of lawyers whom dedicated so much time and
life in preparing the findings and filing the suit.
As Mr Watya said, this suit is the bull’s eye shot that will open the eyes
of world towards the suffering of Indians in Msia.
It was a bit sad part to see only abt 2000 plus people came from Klang
Vallley to this meting despite Brickfields is well known as Indian hub.
Nevertheless the HINDRAF gathering at the other parts of Malaysia pulls huge
crowd in Sban ( ~7000) and Penang (~5000), Butterworth (~4000) and Kulim
(~4000).
As said, may be people are still worried on Bersih gathering reaction
recently. But this is total is different gathering with NON POLITICAL
purpose.
The other request made in the speech were,
1. The signature support by Malaysian Indian on the suit against UK
a. Each Indian to get at least 10 signatures and make 10 copies
of the form
2. The peaceful gathering to support the memo submission to the UK
counsel on coming 25th Nov 2007 at 9am in front of British Council, Jln
Ampang KL.
a. Request made if possible to be in “orange” to assemble peace
and sacred gathering. ( Amathiyum Thuimaiyum)
b. Be in peace and total calm during the gathering as it
resembles the Indians in Msia to pledge the HRH Queen of England to appoint
Her Queen’s Counsel to represent us.
c. The international media will be present at the gathering to
record this peace wave.
d. It will be a legal peace gathering with police permit.
e. Be there early to avoid traffic jam and possible to take
public transport like LRT Star to Ampang Park Stn which is only 50m walk to
the council.
3. Do daily prayers and light up a “agal villaku” in front of every
Indians house daily from 7pm – 8 pm to shown support on the suit against UK.
The gathering came close to end at 10.30 pm with standing recognition to the
brave hearts that fought their life to save the recent Kg Jawa Amman Temple
followed highly motivated song and the IKRAR reading.
It was a stunning and high vibrate gathering that I ever been.
We need more Malaysian Indian to support this team that is fighting for the
rights of all of us whom are poor, oppressed, suppressed and permanently
colonized.
As your simple contribution, pls pass this info to all the Indian tht u
knew.
Pls seek for the form and pen down your signature of support.
Be there in all the meeting to get to the root of the truth.
“KAMI MAHU HAK KAMI”
“KAMI MAHU HAK KAMI”
“KAMI MAHU HAK KAMI”
Thanks for reading and seek for support.

shah alam temple issue is administrative weakness ?
November 11th, 2007MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the solution was reached after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi directed him and Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo to sit down and resolve the matter.
"Earth work for the temple relocation has begun," Samy Vellu told newsmen at the Putra World Trade Centre on Wednesday after the presidential address at the Umno general assembly.
Samy Vellu, who is Works Minister, stressed that the MIC had never looked at the temple demolition issue as a religious problem but more as an administrative weakness.
"Only I as the president had voiced my view on the matter to the Prime Minister and Mentri Besar," he said.
"I have spoken to the Prime Minister and I have told him that we will all celebrate Deepavali," he said, adding that he would also attend the national-level Deepavali celebrations in Brickfields on Nov 11.
