Alice Smith School Scholarship for A-Levels 2011
url: http://www.alice-smith.edu.my/html/s02_article/article_view.asp?keyword=Scholarship
The Alice Smith Schools Association is offering a limited number of full academic scholarships in 2011 for post-SPM Malaysian students to study for British A Levels at the Secondary Campus, Equine Park.
The Alice Smith Schools Association is a not-for-profit educational foundation, established in Kuala Lumpur in 1946. It has flourished in Malaysia and educated many hundreds of children and it would like to extend its social responsibility into scholarships for Malaysians. The underlying aim of the Alice Smith Scholarships is to benefit bright Malaysian students with limited financial means. In return, the selected scholars will be expected to try their hardest and achieve high levels of excellence in both academic and non-academic fields.
Applicants will be very bright, aiming for an international level of education at a good university, and fulfill all the criteria for entry into the Alice Smith School Sixth Form. As the scholarships are aimed at low-to-middle income families, the family of the applicant must be able to disclose income through tax returns.
The length of each Alice Smith Scholarship will be two-and-a-half years. This is in order to acclimatise the chosen scholars to the British education system (and to potentially different learning styles) and to allow for a two-year A Level course.
The scholarships will run from January 2011 to July 2013. From January until July 2011 of the first year, the scholars will join Year 11 (GCSE Year) and take some GCSE examinations in chosen core subjects such as Mathematics, English and Sciences. Others may be available depending on the individual scholar’s strengths. They will then progress to the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) and take their A Level examinations the summers of those years.
Applications for the Alice Smith Scholarships are online and the application form is available for download until 10th September 2010.
The application must be submitted by no later than the 17th September 2010 to the following address:
Ms Eirene Mutto
Education Secretary
The Alice Smith School
No. 3 Jalan Equine
Equine Park, 43300 Seri Kembangan
Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia
Applicants must be prepared to sit for a non-verbal reasoning test at the Alice Smith School in mid September in the event that they are shortlisted. Successful candidate(s) will be interviewed in early October with scholars announced later that month.

These fees include all textbooks and materials, external examination fees, curriculum-based trips, transportation to and from school, lunch, uniform and school trips. Dear lavender
I feel sorry for you girl. At a stage when you should stay focus and study, you are being haunted by thoughts that if STPM is the right thing to do. STPM science is definitely tough but this is the ticket to a degree and post graduate studies. A level is “expensive” and equally tough I must say. I have nephew, nieces and friends’ kids who sat for STPM, HSC and A levels, trust me they are all on par!!!
People who have money will say STPM is a waste of time and opt for A levels which is fine if you got the money. I did my HSC (science) 25 years ago at a time when there were no private colleges and so called university colleges. But to do form 6 back then you need to have an aggregate of not more then 10. STPM today is no less inferior to it in any way but due to political reasons which leads to the people undermining this quality exam.
STPM is indeed a poor man’s path but for SMART students ONLY as it is very demanding but very rewarding in the end. Private colleges in Malaysia are all simply in the “$$$ Business” and none of the foreign universities listed are anywhere in the top 100 in the world. Money gets you the course you want even without the basic qualification but is that course recognized worldwide.
Here is some encouragement for you.
My daughter did STPM in 2009 and scored 4 A and 1B. She studied at her norm and only went for tuition in Literature because it was not offered at her school and she took it as her 5th subject. She never had tuition from year 1 till form 5!!! All she did was focus in class and studied at home under our guidance and did revision with work books and lots of it.
She never burned the midnight oil nor quit watching TV or listening to her favourite songs etc.
She was normal teenager. She was in science and scored 8A’s in SPM. She had her mind set since form 4 that she will do SPTM and get her 1st degree in a local university in her choice of course. She told us from day 1 that she wants a degree from a reputed local uni and not any college.
Her passion is English and literature and so she is pursuing her dream of being a writer. We taught our kids to be passionate about life and to do what pleases them and that brings joy. We also showed them that “$$$” is secondary in Life. Happiness is what counts and money can never buy you happiness and good health.
Get the myth out of your mind that STPM is a waste of time. Please enjoy your life as a teenager doing what you should be doing for you will never come this way again path again in your life. Study as you plan to, play and enjoy time with family and friends. Stop talking about suicide as it is such a negative mindset. Watch quality movies and not run down the mill movies.
Do not let others dictate you on your choice of career in life. Stay focus and achieve your goals and always trust in GOD for HE never fails those who believe in HIM

@martin, Hi, Martin Uncle! You are the one who encouraged me after my parents.Even until today , i am worried whether i took a right decision or not by doing STPM .This because i am a SPM 2009 straight A’s student.Rest of my friends are doing foundation in private college although they have little A’s with them in SPM .
I become very sad as money makes a big difference in our life. However, my dad had retired &my mom is just a house wife.I don’t have the heart to ask them to send me to private college although they are willing to send me .
But sorry to say , i don’t really think about doing STPM till the JPA SCHOLARSHIPS results comes out.Somehow, i will study hard in STPM again and promise will obtain straight A’s again in 2011.By the way , can i know whether ur daughter was in science stream or arts for her STPM??
Again, UNCLE MARTIN , I would appreciate a lot of your encouragement that you have given to me….. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

sir,
i completed my SPM in 2009 with 10As (6A+/4A). i applied for the JPA scholarship but was unsuccessful. I appealed via the website & MIC but when the appeals & local scholarship results came out, i was unsuccessful yet again. currently, my family is not in a position to afford financing my education as my father has just lost his job. due to this, i’m doing form 6. i wish to pursue a degree in medicine. besides the JPA scholarships, i have applied for SimeDarby’s but never got a reply from them either. are there any other scholarships i can opt for? your advice on this issue will deeply be appreciated. thanks & regards.

I got a degree in Computer Science(Bioinformatics) course offer in UTM.I would like to get some opinions about this course and its beneficial criteria from you.And Im a stpm bio students. Do tell me about the future prospects on this course and is it worthy to be studied?
Thank You.

poobalan reply on June 20th, 2010:
hi jo,
UTM’s computer science program is well known among the IPTA (my biased opinion since i graduated from there
)
firstly read about bioinformatics here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioinformatics
since its much related to the healthcare industry, i must say that the job opportunity is limited. many of the “bio-” courses having problem since graduates can’t find suitable employment.
however, if you can learn extra skills in computer science, then can venture into other areas of IT, and IT is a very wide industry.
for me, the advise is that computer science involves learning the theories and also acquiring the latest skills. if you are able to learn new skills, then you are more likely to get a job compared to fellow graduates.

Dear sir, I have obtained 11A’s for my SPM 2009.And yet I didn’t secure for any scholarship that I applied such as Sime Darby,Petronas, matrix and etc..I was called for the interview for JPA but at last I didn’t get through it.I was very frustated as that was my only hope to pursue my further studies. My family is just a middle class and I didn’t to burden mt parent as my younger brothers are still schooling.Currently I am doing my Form 6.I felt some kind as my other friends have already studying foundation in private colleges while I am here doing Form 6.I believe I can score strait A’s for my STPM too..the question is that will I get any scholarship if I score strait A’s for my STPM???I couldn’t take the pain anymore as being a strait A student but not geting any scholarship…………..Or any other alternative way??? plzzz!!!I desperately need a guidance now>>>

well i’ll be miserable as well if i were in your position. tough luck, life’s not fair in short term.
since you can’t afford private colleges (actually some colleges will give you full scholarship for foundation since you got more than 10As), then Form 6 is only option. and since you feel can do well in form 6, then go for it! stay focused and try your best.
if you get 4As, then apply for IPTA and hope that can your course of choice. once in IPTA, you can apply for JPA scholarship.

hi shanti,
the application will open soon. exact date not sure since everyone is waiting for JPA to announce. expect to be in july when the new intake students come in. it will be announced on major newspapers, and at http://esilav2.jpa.gov.my. of course, you can refer to this blog too
yes, 2nd year students can apply but i think CGPA should be 3.50 above. as for the course, its subject to change, but last time Food Science was in the list of accepted courses.

i’m a medical student who has finished his 1st year at Moscow Medical Academy, Russia . unfortunately due to some unavoidable circumstances i apparently need a study loan to pay my fees for my future medical years there. other than MIED loan, where else can i apply. or is it possible for me to apply for scholarship whatsoever?
what are ur suggestions?

poobalan reply on June 29th, 2010:
raj,
many students doing medicine seem to be asking the same thing, and my answer also the same:
- JPA loan (after finished 1st sem and from selected uni only)
- bank loan (personal loan scheme)
- MIED (small amount and higher interest rate)
- MCEF (need to talk to them)
i’m not aware of other loans/scholarships for students already studying in overseas uni for medicine programs.

having 2nd class lower may be a big problem. you need to refer to international scholarship websites. refer to page two of scholarships on this blog. there’s a link to Scholarship Online website.

generally, salary from degree holder is between 1500 and 2500. but currently, the demand for biomedical grads are not much. even scholarships aren’t many, and most, if not all, are closed already.

Sir, may I ask if I can apply for PTPTN loan using my A-Levels result. I plan to do pharmacy in the future. Some say I wont obtain PTPTN using A-Levels, if it’s true then I am doomed. Please clarify to me sir? Thanks in advance.

poobalan reply on July 2nd, 2010:
sham,
as far as i know, PTPTN only accepts SPM results or cert from kolej komuniti, or diploma from politeknik. so, even though you have a-levels, you still apply using SPM results, which just needs 3 credits.

poobalan reply on July 12th, 2010:
jojo, jpa will not offer scholarship for IPTS other than those sponsored under PIDN and those cases under PILN who got to study locally only.
as for alternative for medicine scholarship other than JPA, this is popular question and the answer is none that is available now.

hi tiro,
you should check with your employers, maybe they can sponsor your study. other options is to check other hospitals or medical centers to see if they are willing to offer scholarship. you can try write in to their HR department.

if you aim to enter IPTA, then have to do STPM. if you plan to study elsewhere, then take a-levels if you can afford it.

poobalan reply on July 12th, 2010:
hi abi,
the USM for Medic is a twinning program with Indians uni. and so the cost is different. JPA does offer loan but depends on the uni and also you must have completed at least a semester first before applying.
if you can’t afford to cover the cost, may try other option like bank loan.
as far as i know, MBBS and MD are terms used in different countries, and nothing more.

Reply
poobalan reply on July 16th, 2010:
abi,
if you were to study in mahsa, PTPTN will cover about 160k (depending on family income) of the cost. you will still need about rm120k more. option left is bank loan or maybe mortgage/sell property. or if later MAHSA offers scholarship, you can try for it (IF they offer).
sir, where n how can apply loan for the arcitectural course?

poobalan reply on July 14th, 2010:
you can always apply for PTPTN loan if its an MQA approved program.

poobalan reply on July 18th, 2010:
if you want to apply for overseas uni, you can apply directly to them or go through the placement agents. There’s a few registered placement agencies. i’ve listed some at:
http://poobalan.com/blog/education-help/websites/
you will need to take entrance exams or foundation programs. also, you will need an NOC certificate from MOHE. your placement agent will guide you on the procedure.

Hai,
I’m Lilis. I have financial problem and I dont know if i can further my study because of this matter. I have been offered by Bangor University, Wales to further study in MSc Environmental Forestry. I had my scholarship before from JPA for my bachelor study at UPM. I had applied to them for this master programme but they rejected my application. I have also gone to mara to consult on this matter but they only give loan to students who pursue at their recognize universities.
What else can I do for this matter? I really2 want to further my study in this course since it’s my passion.
Hope you can reply me asap via email if possible.
Thanks & regards,
Lilis (^_^)

lilis,
you can ask the uni itself if they can offer position as research assistant or tutor, which can help to cover the cost of living. they may also have internal scholarship programs. another option is to try for those companies related to forestry and environment, like plantation firms (IoI, Sime, KLK, Guthrie etc) , timber firms, and also international bodies related to your field. you can write to them to inquire about scholarship offers. another option is Maxis, but i think the postgrad application is in end of 2010 only.
if its not recognised uni, you will have a problem securing scholarships locally.

muslin,
i think many people will be envious, disappointed, proud, and even angry to read your comments! spoilt for choices is not an everyday scenario, and in fact, i think its the first time for to get such a question.
to answer this, compare :
bond/not bonded. if bonded, the duration.
amount sponsored
what the sponsorship covers (foundation, degree, cost of living, flight tickets, internship etc.)
because its medicine, you can skip the first criteria because you have to come back and serve the housemanship period.
if the difference is not much, just pick one of them. after all, its the govt’s money.
hey, its not hard to decide is it? after all, if you got 3 offers, you must be a brilliant student

hi kiat,
i’m not aware of anyone offering loan for a-levels. however you can apply loan for foundation program from selected IPTS via PTPTN.
you should try the chinese clan association, Kojadi etc. in case they offered loans for pre-uni program.
