My name is Poobalan. I hail from Klang, Malaysia. This blog is my contribution to the online community. I cover a range of topics that is mostly relevant to the Malaysian Indian community. This includes social, political, economic, and religious/spiritual issues. This blog also focuses on Tamil schools, education, equal rights, ethnic relations, Indian political parties and NGOs, plus occasionally my interests – movies, gardening, photography, and my dog.  I also write about interesting places I visit.  Between November and July, I would talk about post-SPM/STPM options and scholarships. Keep up the good work.

I have always maintained and still maintain, primary problem to us Indians in Malaysia is MIC. When leaders of our party select the candidates, thats a problem. Thats dictatorial. They will select people who they are indebted to. Usually the kind of people you see in this current election. It is a self serving vicious cycle. So, the only direction MIC can go is from bad to worse. I try to tell this to as many Indians I can find, but no luck so far.

Malaysian Indians in a way are a loyal bunch. MIC is like the husband or wife or a voting person. It is hard to disassociate one self from it. It is our past. It had a very good past. When the British turned their back against us, it was MIC that took us forward with the Malay govt.

Make no mistake, the first govt. of Malaya, was Malay. This metality has never faded away among the Malay politicians.

Malay folks in general have been very kind to us compared to what’s going on in other countries, including neighboring countries, except for Singapore.

MIC is for the few, for “friends and family” of MIC leaders. Unless it opens up, the vicious cycle of nepotism, corruption, greed will continue.

Finally, make no mistake, the Chinese will only look after themselves. I spend 1/2 my time in the US, 1/3rd of my time in Hong Kong and China, and visit Malaysia often. No one is going to look after us, but us!

Indians need to stick together. We need to FIX MIC. Samy Vellu is corrupt, and greedy. I doubt his greed will ever subside, and I doubt he will ever change. They say you can’t teach old dogs new tricks. This is defintely true with Samy. He is an old dog.

Maybe DAP sounds good right now. Maybe we should vote for DAP. For the long term, maybe MIC has to lose, for it to be rid of croneys and crooks. The re-build it. It is time for a new generation of Indians. Time to give them a voice.

COPY OF MY EMIAL SENT WHICH COULD BE OF INTEREST TO ALL AT THIS BLOGG.

      My email – jaychelliah@yahoo.com

      Dear YB Datuk Murugiah,
I am fortunate to write this email to you and I wish to advise YB of my proposal below, without going into too much detail at the present time. Your agreement, sanction and assistance what ever these would be is appreciated.

The background is that Indians are at present seeking political power and via this mechanism hopefully will enhance their lives. Although, we have a multitude of Indian parties representing Indians we need the following.

      (1) A coalition of Indian Parties under one Malaysian Indian National Patriotic Front. This will give the platform to have the consolidation of the fragmented indian parties and a force in the Political Arena. YB, you are a veteran politician and you are best placed to appreciate this. Indians in general as a whole will welcome a United Front similar to the BN. Thats the way forward.

      (2) TThe following is the primany motive for this email and my involvement. I am not politically inclined but I am more business orientated. Indians need to empower themselves to further their econimic determination by self help. I propose a “investment fund” funded my monthly contribution by working Indians and their families. The fund will give Indians the opportunity to capitalise on the investment opportunities that we would encounter to further the Indian Community and at the same time provide job opportunities in much larger numbers in the business world. We have opportunities with India at our doorstep to obtain the techical and development support. Indians will continue to integrate with India and we are best placed to undertake this with a strong capital base. This capital base is our catalyst to empower Indians in Malaysia.

I anticipate that with the appropriate marketing – the receipts into this fund would be 20 Million Ringgit per month. YB, I have applied the sensitivity analysis on this quantum of this fund and 20Million per month is on the conservative side. A capital base of say US100 Million per year from the Indian community will enhance their investment and economic staus for many years to come. It is envisaged that with the upturn in the Global Economy in 2010, the fund will be best placed to secure good investments.

The Fund is unlike a bank and will work on separate methodology and risk analysis. This will give the Fund a competitive edge.

YB, there is an unfortunate, lack of enterprise culture within Maika Holding and the current intended disposal of some of the most profitable components of Maika. We need to STOP, this now. We need to develop and train Indian techocrates and entrepreneurs with a business development programme. The Indain Institute of Management in Bangalore are open to develop this culture for us.

      (3) Like all schemes we must have a social contribution. I have outlined a scheme to help enhance the rural and urban indians. My proposal involves the development of a quality educational support programme for all Indian schools. We need to uplift our human interlectual capital and the educational base is the commencement strategy. I am able to advise on this matter too.

      (4) We have to streghten ourselves commencing at the lower end of the financial markets with a new and improved micro credit system for the Indian community. This will give Indians the impetus to be more entreprising and motivated to help themselves. The more advanced banking system is to take a shareholding with the 3 Indian Banks which have been give a banking lisence recently. We can regain our commercial banking fraternity after the demise of the United Asian Bank and others. With the backing of a financial institution we have more credibility.

      (5) We have quality Indian business leaders like A Krishan, Tony Fernandes, Vinod Sekhar to name a few. These gentleman will I am sure contribute their expertise to develop this proposal. YB, this scheme needs your support and help to provide a platform for a dialog to implement Indian Empowerment.

YB, we need speed of execution and a determined modus to implement this especially with when our Prime Minister is developing a new business environment withing Malaysia and I seek YB assistance to take advantage of this change and empower the Indian Community in an Entreprise Culture. The Fund requires approvals from the government and Bank Negara to commence operations. YB, this is where your greates influence would be welcomed.

We can DO IT – Yes We Can (from Barack Obama)

Thank you for taking time to read this email.

      Regards

      Jaya Chelliah

I am a Californian left Malaysia 23 years ago and still feel
the connection with our Indian people. Your commence have been the most
encouraging and makes most sense. Our Indian community have to help
and support each other. Don’t wait for Government handout let do things
among us and stop fighting. All the smart and intelligent Indians lets help
our less fortunate Indians. Lets get focused here, the time is marching in all
us especially our younger generation. Turn off the Television and make our
Indian kids get smarter. That is the key to everything. Let’s do better then

even my parents, sis and bro, they love n just get married and now happy with their life…..once they built their understanding, responsibility pls dont go for pohrutham or any johthidar..

this is my point of view.so hope u consider abt this and give your own feed back

    • poobalan says:

well ,with 7 credits you can study diploma programs in many local colleges/uni – but can’t get scholarship. you can apply for PTPTN loan.

STPM is of course the easiest choice. you will get a place automatically. just have to decide if science or arts stream.

ask your self – your ambition, interest.

    • poobalan says:

Hi Yimanuell, to get scholarship with 4A is very hard, unless you have some sports achievement or extremely good leadership/ko-ko achievements. you can try for engineering programs in UTM (via UPU application). in private colleges, not many offer petroleum engineering – only the famous colleges. Cost is of course higher. but note that you have to do foundation 1 year before enrolling in the actual degree program. can apply PTPTN loan is the program is accredited.

hi, you have to check the requirements in the syarat kemasukan in UPU website. i believe you can apply for teaching in primary school via the program latihan perguruan lepasan SPM in MOE website. Pls also check teaching in UPSI. Besides teaching, there’s not many options in local uni – you can try UPM (sarawak branch), UM, Uni Tun Hussein Onn,

All the website i mentioned is in “application” page of this blog.

    Hi Bro

    Good day to you

I got to know today that the Tamil news air time is going to change again.

    My question would be

    • Why aren’t our Tamil speaking Politician act on it as what our Chinese counterpart are doing?
    • Why aren’t RTM get the people’s concern before changing the air time?
    • Will our elected Indian politicians in this country will always keep quiet and dumb on all the discriminations that happens to us until we, the people have to take action?
    • If the change is necessary, why it have to be at 6:00pm? Why not fix to the original time? If it’s at 6:00pm …… who is going to watch it?

Someone has to take action ASAP cause all I heard was it’s going to happen on 20th this month and the action taken has to leave a message that the people will question RTM if changes happen without prior notice to the people

BTW, found out that the url (http://www.bpa.gov.my/) you posted on one of the latest blog are actually owned by Bintulu Port Authority and not Biro Pengaduan Awam (Public Complaints Bureau)

    Regards

Mal – a concern Malaysian citizen

    • poobalan says:

      Hi,

Well, I have heard about the changes of air time yet.
      Answers:
      – Maybe the politician also do not know about it yet. In previous cases, I remember some of the political party members sending protest notes and all.
      – Well, RTM may make decision based on in its survey results or based on surveys done by the rating agencies. And usually, the reason to avoid asking people first is because there will be too much work involved and lots of comments or ideas will be received. So, what many agencies will do is implement first, ask opinion later.
      – Well, i think the night news may clash with other TV programs in Astro, so maybe less viewership. We have to see the reason given by RTM for the change.

Thanks for the alert. I have corrected the BPA address in the “Minnal FM interfiew with Murugiah” posting. Actually, BPA website will change again on 1st May 2009 from http://www.bpa.jpm.my to http://www.pcb.gov.my

hi anna, i went 4 usm interview 4 medicine course recently..my matriculation results: i got 3.90 in my first semester and 3.44 for my second semester.average is 3.67.
    biology– A
    chemistry— B+
    MATHEMATICS — A-

i heve applied 4 unimas, usm, upm, ukm and um…in your opinion,do you think i have any chance to do medicine course with this result at IPTA ????

    • poobalan says:

      hi kavitha,

you results dropped in second sem?? 🙂

to be frank, i think quite tough to get medicine with 3.67. anyway, pray hard and hope for the best. maybe by looking at overall application, you may have a chance.

      • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

hello annan…i need some advice from u?is it safe to apply UPU 4 medic in this order..UNIMAS,UMS,UPM,UKM,UM,UNIMAS,UNIMAS,UMS?what is your opinion regarding this?i really keep my fingers crossed to get a place either at upu/unimas to do medic….

        • poobalan says:

          hi,

well, since you can’t do anything regarding the application ordering, why worry over it? 🙂 forget about it, just wait for results to come. meanwhile, do something useful like working or new hobby. don’t create stress for no reason.

        • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

          hi anna…actually, i haven’t apply 4 UPU fasaII.so.i want 2 ask ur opinion regarding the application ordering before i apply 4 it….

          • poobalan says:

i see, you are from matric, so today is last day. then it that case, refer to the expected cut off mark you will get and try for the uni. but remember that for medic seat, the competition is very tough. i’m sure you read all the cases in the papers and internet where top students also don’t get a seat.

i think the order you put is OK. you can also refer to the people listed in the “guidance” page of this blog to get advice on cut-off marks and chances for uni application.

        • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

hi,ANNA….I didn’t get usm!!!any chances to do medic at local ipta with cgpa 3.67???

        • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

hello, annan.i didn’t even get UPU.can’t we appeal for medicine at UPU?

      • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

HI,ANNAN.I GOT OFFER FROM UNIVERSITAS PADJADJARAN,BANDUNG,INDONESIA.
IS IT RECOGNISED BY OUR GOVERNMENT?I GOT OFFER LETTER FROM AIMST ALSO.
I AM CONFUSED NOW.SHOULD I DO MEDICINE AT AIMST OR UNPAD?WHICH IS A BETTER CHOICE?CAN I TRY FOR JPA LOAN/SCHOLARSHIP?

        • poobalan says:

          Hi,

To check if its recognised or not, you need to refer to JPA and MMC (malaysian medical council). please refer to
          http://poobalan.com/blog/education-help/websites/ and http://www.mmc.gov.my

Generally, studying in indonesia is cheaper than in local varsities. So, if cost is a big issue, then indonesia is the option. however, if you are the type that can’t live alone or family will be worried, then take AIMST.

JPA Scholarship no more chance since it has been given out already. for JPA loan, you can only apply from second semester only (meaning after enrolling in the uni).

        • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

THANKS FOR YOU REPLY.UNIVERSITAS PADJADJARAN IS RECOGNISED BY BOTH JPA AND MMC.I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS MEANT BY “JPA Scholarship no more chance since it has been given out already”?DOES IT MEAN THAT JPA SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE GIVEN ONLY FOR SPM LEAVERS AND NOT FOR MATRICULATION LEAVERS?I HEARD THAT IF I DO WELL IN EXAMS , JPA LOAN CAN BE CHANGED TO JPA SCHOLARSHIP…IS IT TRUE???FOR YOUR INFORMATION, I AM UNDER JPA LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME!!!

          • poobalan says:

Hi again, from my understanding, the JPA scholarship is PILN (luar negara) and PIDN (dalam negara). There’s also a scheme for 9A and above achievers to further study via STPM. There’s also a loan scheme for students studying in foreign uni. at the moment, only the loan scheme is open for application. the others have been closed – meaning not offered again until next year.

matriculation students are those who are sponsored either under PILN, MARA etc.

since you mentioned you are under local scholarship program, by right you should have been allocated a place in a local IPTS or IPTA. so, just continue with that.

As far as loan being converted in scholarship if excellent results, i think the practice has been stopped. anyway, i think they only consider if you get 1st class honors. few years back, if you get 2nd class upper, you can get discount up to 75% of the loan amount.

        • KAVITHA RAMACHANDRAN says:

HOW ABOUT THE INTEREST FOR JPA LOAN?

BUT,,,,,,,,,,,,, the show he host about the bussiness opportunity in agro(Pertanian n Penternakan) makes me so upset……
I strongly believe that he has delivered a wrong message to the viewers. one of the person MR Ramadas from Butterworth who talked about ‘leech breeding’ is the wrong person. a person who enter the bussiness without any knowledge about leech. a person made so many indian lost thousands of RM. he is a person who should not come on TV….. but he always appear on news paper due to his politic friend…..
BUT Mr Pandidurai who I respect the most should not promote him because a lots of people from our community believe his word.. Why Mr Pandidurai didn’t find out the truth b4 he interview a person.???

    • poobalan says:

      Hi,

You should provide info on the person (MR Ramadas) you mentioned to Mr Pandithurai. Anyway, i guess he is just a host, its the producers who make decisions on who to invite to give a talk. And if there’s proof of any criminal activity, get the persons involved to make a police report.

Of the total number of successful applicants, 27,829 were Bumiputeras, 10,116 Chinese and the remaining Indians.

He said 24,581 were science stream students and the remaining were from arts stream.

  46. Malar says:

Hi Friend, I need some ideas from u? I am a housewife and I have three daughters. My Husband working at Construction Firm. I’m looking for small Home Business Opportunity, but I don’t know what kind of business have to do.

Can u give me some ideas for me. I hope u will give me the ideas.

    thank you,

    Regards,
    Ms.Malar.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Ms Malar,

You mentioned home based, so i’ll assume that means limited or no travelling involved. the way i look at it, there’s three things you can consider:

      1. something that really interests you, something that you can do as hobby or passion – like interior design plans, knitting, gardening-nursery, catering /meal packs for homes, bakery, etc.

      2. something that complements your husband’s work – for example, jobs that his company can outsource to you – Autocad drawing, interior design,
      paperwork/documentation, proofreading, telemarketing, etc.

      3. something that may not be your interest, but is the current trend/demand – tuition, MLM, babysitting, packing stuff, e-commerce, trading, etc.

some factors to consider before getting into a home business:
      1. does it need special certification or qualification
      2. are you interested in doing the work?
3.amount of money you can invest in the business
      4. involves IT?
      5. how much hours a day you need to spend
      6. any contacts in the area you are interested?
      7. have you done a market survey in your place on the products/services you want to sell?

  49. Kutty says:

    Hi Poobalan,

Great job with this blog. I think all Indians should stand as Indian not as individual groups like Tamils, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalees & all other Indians subs which I have not mentioned. We must be a team & respect each other. Everyone’s culture has its own uniqueness & reasons it is practice. We shouldn’t condemn or make fun of it.

It is shameful even amongst our people we compare ourselves saying one race is better than the other. That is wrong. No one is greater than the other. If I were to cut my hand & allow it to bleed & I cut another person’s hand who is of a different background, will our blood be of a different colour? In India it is always “Jathi”. We must wash that mentality away. It was a form of governing those days. We need to all WAKE UP!!!

My view on religions is it is a language to explain about God & this is created by Man. God is there. As long as we do good for others we do the work of God. We need not seek God, he is omnipresent in everything & anything we do or go through. When I pray at the temple, I pray for others as I believe that when I pray for others, my prayers can help people who are in need more than I am. Furthermore, my prayers will be answered when the time is right.

We must be united as one. Even if people say something offensive towards the Indians, we must be able to take it calmly, as each of our religions ( Islam, Christians, Buddhist, Hindus & other religious faiths) teaches us to be calm & think rationally. An idle mind is the devils workshop & I feel people who are educated should think before they act. I would like to share with you a website that has helped me & I believe will help others to understand many doubts or questions. I was a skeptic at first. Now I’m a believer & it has made me a better person. This can be used by anyone no matter what is your religious belief.

    Thank You
