This includes social, political, economic, and religious/spiritual issues. This blog also focuses on Tamil schools, education, equal rights, ethnic relations, Indian political parties and NGOs, plus occasionally my interests – movies, gardening, photography, and my dog.  I also write about interesting places I visit.  Between November and July, I would talk about post-SPM/STPM options and scholarships. • poobalan says:

      Hi Sasi,

you can go to the pejabat pendidikan daerah (PPD) and register as private candidate. if you are not sure of the PPD office, then go back to your school and ask the office staff. You then can study yourself or join the tuition centers and attend tuition.

    Hi Mr Poobalan,

I’m Premilla from KL working with a company and trying to start a part time business. At the moment I sell my home made cup cakes at my office canteen. Can you help me to get some contacts to develop my business?

    Thank you.

    • poobalan says:

      hi premilla,

i’m unable to provide contacts. i suggest you advertise in forums like umic or miclub. open a facebook account and promote your product or even set up a blog in blogspot.

2ndly, depending on where you live, try putting out phamplets or give out samples to business around your area.

      sir,

they have to get an internet line via TM (streamyx). either go through the PPD (pejabat pendidikan daerah) or apply via TM office/branches. also need to check if the school already has MOE’s network installed and can upgrade to include internet access. then, get some company to check the server and if need, install the necessary equipments so that can access internet for all PC in the lab (need some switches and probably a router).

      hi Darshini,

your brother should be able to communicate in BM and English (read/write/speak) to a certain extent.

      1. most SKM courses offer govt based loan, so no need to worry.

      2. what field is he interested in? maybe he was working before this and have some experience or interest on something?

      3. which location is he staying?

read a bit about SKM at http://www.dsd.gov.my first for some info.

    Hi Mr. Poobalan,
I am a teacher who did my degree in tesl. i would like to furture my studies to do my masters. i am interested in moving away from language and getting into the field of child phycology. many of them are discouraging me due to the porspect later.I am rather confuse and if i proceed with my plans where can i enroll myself? my priority is ipta.

    • poobalan says:

      hi Rishi,

its true that the prospect for child psychologist is less than language teacher. its a small field, and so the opportunities are less.

having said that, getting an education is not only about completing a diploma or degree, but also about carving opportunities for yourself. in the course of doing your masters, you will be better exposed to those in the field and possibly gain employment with them. IPTA, hospitals, research institutes (both locally and globally) are among the possible employers. Alternatively, you can consider being an entrepreneur and open up your own centre.

I think UKM offers child psychology program. In any case, you can check with the respective IPTA website. Try the usual suspects like UKM, USM, UM, UMS, Unimas.

    Hi Mr Poobalan,
I am a SPM leaver(2009)…i studied in a boarding school and i got quite good results 2..9A’S AND 1B in SPM…I applied to enter The University of Nottingham to do chemical enginer ..and today i got the offer letter from there…the intake would be in july..i heard that most of the students there are international students…i am little bit nervous and still thinking how would i adapt my new life style there…i planned to visit the campus coming jun holiday..any advise n useful information for me?..forget to tell,i got B+ in my physics..

    • poobalan says:

      hi arasan,

uni of nottingham in malaysia? i think it would be a good choice and exposure to mix with international students. shouldn’t be a problem. their campus is located in an small town area. there’s not much of a lifestyle change since still in malaysia 🙂

i would suggest that you check out their labs, library, internet facilities etc, since these would be critical for the studies. being a foreign university, it should not be a problem, but just do check.

      hi Thinesh,

i’ve very sorry to hear about your mother. My condolences to you.

      1. what is your brother doing? how old is he?

      2. is your grandpa working? who is supporting him if he not working?

      3. are you staying in selangor? was your mother born in selangor as well?

      4. did you apply for IPTA? what was the results?

      5. at the moment, scholarship are very few, and your results are not excellent enough. only hope is to get financial help due to your family background. even that won’t be easy.

      6. can you get someone to talk to uniten (a relative maybe) so that can reduce the fee?

      7. PTPTN loan would be a problem since you don’t have the guarantor but still can apply. just attach the death certificate Copies and surat akuan sumpah.

thanx 4 repliyn my comment…plz advice me wat i should do nw???

        • poobalan says:

for item 1 to 2, can try approach jabatan kebajikan selangor (check nearest address at http://www.jkm.gov.my) and see if you can get some monthly help. you have to put your grandpa as guardian to show that no income.

          3. also, you can approach selangor govt (go to your adun office) or read more at http://www.selangor.gov.my i think they give some money for students who enter university (one time only).

          4. wait for ipta result, so don’t enrol in uniten first.

          5. wait for scholarships that suit you to appear.

          6. ok nvm.

          7. for PTPTN, you must be enrolled first, and the college will help you to apply.

          8. this is normal la. they give a long list, but doesn’t mean every student get scholarship. nearly all colleges will do this. you can try powertek.

i say wait for IPTA result first.

      3. what is your interest?

        • poobalan says:

          hi again brintha,

          1. if your college will accept your results for studying medicine, then you can go for it.

          2. your foundation results are very good.

          3. ok.

          4. since your foundation results are good, and you feel confident, you should give it a go.

hi , sir, i just finish my foundation in science…like do do degree….MBBS….or dental….locally i try sum uni but i didnt get b coz of my spm result….i didnt get B in science subject…i juz pass oni…but i wanna do medic/dental??? i gt seat in msu 4 pharmacy…bt didnt get 4 medic…dunno wat 2 do sir?/?? wat u sugeest sir??? i plan 2 go india 2 do dental??? wat u think sir???

    • poobalan says:

      hi swathi,

where did you do foundation? the place you can continue for degree depends on whether your foundation is recognised by that uni or not.

what is your foundation results? do you think you can cope with a difficult course like medicine when in spm you did not even secure B for science subjects? pls think carefully and truthfully. don’t be enticed by the colleges or agents that “everything can”.

if you are really 200% confident, and if your foundation results are accepted in a uni (this uni must be recognised by JPA and MMC), then you can proceed with your plans.

      remember:

      1. are you confident?
      2. is the foundation recognised?
      3. is the uni for medic/dental recognised by JPA and MMC?
      4. do you have funds to further study?

hi sir. i am tharuminee from klang. i completed my a-levels. i am interested in pursuing a degree in medicine and i managed to secure a place in MELAKA MANIPAL MEDICAL COLLEGE. unfortunetly, my financial status is preety weak. could u please advice me on this matter. thanks in advance.

    • poobalan says:

      hi tharuminee,

your problem is quite common because nearly everyone is interested to study medicine and don’t have money to do it! we don’t have the support like our Malay students, so you can mostly forget scholarships unless your results are nearly perfect.

my advice is to figure out if you can sustain 5-6 years cost of study before starting to study. PtPTN will cover about half the tuition fee only, meaning that you have another 150k + another Rm50-100k cost of living for next 5-6 years. (maybe be higher if you are the party-going, smoking, enjoying type). your parents should have invested in some property or saving scheme if you have planned to study medicine earlier. you can try loans like MIED or MCEF etc, but they offer a pittance which won’t sustain much.

if you can’t afford it, then you may want to consider changing your interest.

  36. GHANDHI says:

I just hapened to go into ur site. I am totally impressed by what you are doing. I really wish there were more Malaysian Indians doing what you are doing.
I am 53 and have 4 children aged from 13 to 21. Some of the questions posed sound so normal to us, but to many Indians out there its a dilemma. Putting aside Political feelings, Maybe you could actually expand your services by having a team of advisers where certain subjects that you are not familiar with could be addressed by some others. Cheers and Have a nice day.

    • poobalan says:

Ghandhi sir (not often i can say this!),

i agree that many things that sounds normal, can in fact be a challenge to the people out there (not only Indians but all). I am amazed at times looking at questions students ask, but then realise that the lack of info causes this problem. so, best i can do is provide much info as possible.

i rather not reinvent the wheel in education sector. i do tell the students to refer to other websites and also relevant govt agencies so that they can get better picture. having a team of advisers is not easy because need to get like-minded people involved (for free) and consumes more time coordinating. most importantly, it needs to be consistent, and i can’t guarantee that other people will be able to be provide that. i prefer to just point the readers in the (hopefully) right direction, at the moment. which is like a kind of broad network, instead of specific people. areas like law (conversion cases), tuition, cultural classes, religious issues, business opportunities, tekun loan, etc. all have their own sphere of reference. best if we just link to them.

however, things may change in the future, depending on my time availability and other resources.

but, most likely i will still stick to education sector and won’t venture into other areas.

      thanks though for the comment.

  37. Devan says:

    Bro,
Isnt it better if the total Malaysian Indian community unite under someone or some TRUSTED group and get some fund or business oppportunity to help those poor suffering Indians???
Personally feel that our Indian community is spending too much on prayers in temples and why cant ALL these $$$ be channeled into a Fund?
Also why cant temples be a place other then for worship only? eg….tuitions classes for poor students, tailoring classes, business talks or guidance classes?
Really hope for the day when our community comes out of their nutshells and develop forward in all fields !!! Rather then folllowing blindly leaders who enrich their relatives and families…..

    • poobalan says:

      well bro Devan,

obviously its better if total community can unite. but that’s utopian (ideal). something that’s not achievable. i haven’t read anywhere in the world people staying united for long period of time. maybe in very small groups, yes. but as group gets bigger, diversification brings opposing views. for me, its a constant cycle.

TRUSTED – another problem. who can we trust? can we even trust ourselves? no policeman, we can beat traffic light. no people look, we can throw rubbish every where. we also not perfect, how to find trustworthy leader. also, its not easy to be follower. we can’t seem to follow instructions or ideals. argue a bit, open new club/party/NGO/team/group. everyone wants to be leader. so who going to be follower?

religion is a personal issue, more so with our religion which is diversified. we can’t go and argue with a person since its a personal relationship between him and God. We don’t have any law saying that must donate money to a Fund. For Muslims (example), they have to pay zakat. I think Catholics have similar concept. Maybe its time for Hindu Sangam to explore this idea. Of course govt will decline or even oppose because its related to other religion and they won’t interfere.

Some temples are improving now. we can see bharatham classes, library room, yoga classes, computer classes, sprirtual talks etc being held. for those temples not doing so, time to move on. it depends much on the temple leaders. whether they want to adapt change and be innovative.

  38. Ghandhi says:

Hi Poobalan, Greetings on this Wed evening. I really care for the Indian society and as my dad used to keep on reminding me – Education will be your passport to sucess. It shall forever remain true.
I grew up in Serdang, Selangor and only a few years ago we saw the 1st local Indian graduate as a doctor. Now we have a few more in the pipe line. Non from IPTAs. But they did it!!!
Me? I went up to form 6,didnt do well and in frustration left for Singapore. But what ever happened I was determined not to be a failure. I am now a businessman. I have beena deejay and emcee for the last 25 years and married with 4 lovely kids. My wife and I emphasis the importance of English toour kids.
Us Indians used to be the best among alll the races in our prowess in English. Not anymore judging by the letters sent in here. Happy Malaysia Day to allhere. I may be a regular writer in this site, with your permission.

  39. Ghandhi says:

    Shiam,
if you want to learn play the veena, yes any large temples can refer you to teachers. Petaling jaya has a few teachers. from home, usually.

  40. Ghandhi says:

To all who intend towrite in for advice, here is a suggestion. Please take the trouble to put together your sentences in gramatically correct English. Your messages are read by many here. You will also create a better impression and at the same time improve your own language skills. Try not to use “sms english”.
Lets try and improve our English. I am surprised at the low standard of English here. 6As and 9As in SPM but not making an effort to write better quality English. How tobe come doctors ofquality? Hmmm.

      Ghandhi sir,

at first i had the same opinion as yourself about usage of “sms english”. but then, i realised something. the Queen’s english is changing. its a living language and the change due to technology and acceptance by younger users is inevitable. more and more words are entering the oxford dictionary. i guess as the older people, we have to adapt as well. i only hope that in formal situations (resume, reports, exam answers etc) students don’t accidentally use sms language. you know, a year ago, there was a report in UK where the teachers complained that exam answers consisted of many abbreviations due to prevalent use of sms by kids as young as 6! they proposed to ban usage of hp by young children in order to curb the spoiling of the language. not sure what happened.

  41. GHANDHI says:

Well its just a suggestion to all readers here on how to make agood impression and at the same time improving one’s language skills.

just read in the papers today that the two principals remarks were not seditious as pointed out by nazri aziz so no action will be taken against them. what a bloody joke!!! if it was uttered by an indian or a chinese i am sure nazri will say differently. just goes to show what a gutless govt we are dealing with. the damn malays can say anything against the other races and no action will be taken but cant be said for the other races who says the same against the malays. what a mob of wankers.well i am going to say what i think of the malays. they are just a bunch of idiots who are damn lazy and good for nothing and a burden on the country’s resources.and to umno party they sure know how to pick the name cuz it sure as hell depicts them exactly UMNO – U Malays No Otak!!!

    • poobalan says:

hi sonny, while i can understand your frustrations, to group all the malays into such definition is not the way to go. just like in any other communities, there will be the good, the average, the bad, the “don’t care” etc. groups. there are many malays who are not idiots or lazy or good for nothing, just like there are similar chinese, indians and other races equally not idiots or lazy. granted, some of the malays have been conditioned for last 30 years into believing the supremacist concept and belittling others in the name “rights” and “privileges”, which has be abused to a large extent. we can’t do much as we are living in an unequal-rights country as mentioned by MP Najib.

but by stereotyping all of them, you only end up getting more hostile response from all around.

Hello Mr. Poobalan want to find out is there any rewards given to students who got their good results in their UPSR results.

  46. poobalan says:

    Hi Ms Sujithra,

By “good” i assume you mean either 7As or 5As. For 7As, MIC would cover the reward via MIED. For 5As, there’s tens of thousands of them, so its difficult for any single association/group to give reward. What usually happens is:

    1. Some schools source out rewards from VIPs, businessmen etc.
    2. Some companies/organisation/koperasi reward the children of employee/member (like Telekom or TNB).
    3. some groups like NGOs may choose to give rewards to the schools/area/community that they serve.
    4. Local politician may fork out money to give reward students in some schools.

    nandri anna

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Navina,

firstly, realise that you are not alone in having this problem. i suppose many students (including myself years ago) have problem covering the many topics in each subjects. its not easy, and no one said it is. let’s see what you can do to improve the situation:

      1. reflect on the last one year and see how things can be improved. where did the time got spent? can reduce travel time to and from school? how to save time?

      2. which subjects having most topics yet to cover? focus more energy on them, but dont forget the other subjects.

      3. do a timetable, and stick to it as much as possible. this is what we do from school until we retire in life. make a plan and give our best to stick with the plan.

      4. try some group study to share the burden and to reduce revision time. of course, you have to pick the right students to study with.

      5. how about taking up tuition or SMC classes to support the study?

      6. practice, practice, practice. the more revision, past year question, workbooks you cover, the more you will be comfortable and understand the topics.

      7. also, try to be creative in studying, you can learn some topics via internet, search books in library or even watching discovery channel in astro. talking to friends/family members/teacher also helps to improve understanding of the topics.

      motivation:

      1. i believe the best motivator you can have is yourself. think back – why you are doing form 6 and what is your ambition. focus on the “finishing line” and not the hardship of the race. think about the happiness of family members, friends when you do well. think about the knowledge you gain and how you can progress in life after that.

      2. read some motivation books. watch some “feel good movies” (english or tamil doesn’t matter). try jerry mcguire or forrest gump.

3.take some time to relax/meditate/visit temple to pray and calm the mind.

talk to your elders to share your feelings. or contact the numbers given in the counseling page to talk to counselors if you feel like it.

focus, discipline, commitment, hard work – these are the key elements.

remember, its never to late and to take things easy. you can worry, but don’t worry too much until you end up miserable. in the end, life goes on. its never a dead end road.

      all the best.

  49. Dheera says:

    Good Day Mr. Poobalan,

Will you be able to advice me few world recognized universities in Malaysia or where can I get the details of these universities. I am looking into other Universities apart from University Malaya.

    Kindly advice.

    Thanks,
    Dheera

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Dheera,

world-recognised universities in malaysia? that’s like contradictory 🙂 i suppose you meant IPTAs. The popular ones are UM, UKM, USM. We are not exactly on the world map, except maybe in developing or 3rd world countries.

  50. Sai says:

Hi mr.poobalan.. I would like to learn sangeetham , do u know wer i can ind it in shah alam… plz provide me the details.. it would be better if they could come to my house… thankz

    • poobalan says:

      hi sai,

i think a bit difficult to find such teachers in shah alam since very few indians live here. maybe you can ask around at the temples at section 16, pdg jawa or seksyen 24, 25. you would chance a better chance if you look over in klang.
