no birth cert can go school
May 16th, 2009The issue of kids without birth certificates being rejected from schools have been around for ages. Last time, the Education Minister Hishamuddin announced that such kids will be accepted in schools, but the implementation by Education Ministry did not materialise properly. Parents still had problems because some schools said “no pekeliling came”.
Now, Minister Shahrizat announces similar thing – as long as children are having referral letter from Welfare Department, they can go to school:
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian children without birth certificates can now attend government-aided schools provided they have a referral from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
All they need is a confirmation from JKM or their village headmen that they were born in Malaysia, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said.
“Parents of children without birth certificates should come forward and seek assistance from the authorities,” she said during a visit to the Taman Megah’s Handicapped and Disabled Children’s Home yesterday.
Four children who were abandoned at the home have been unable to attend school as they were without birth certificates.
The matter, which was reported in The Star, caught the attention of Shahrizat.
She said her ministry had been working with the National Registration Department (NRD) and NGOs to provide birth certificates for these children and put them in school.
JKM Selangor director Adnan Abu Bakar said they would provide social reports and referral letters for the children.
NRD Births, Deaths and Adoptions director Mohd Azmin Hassan said they would wait for JKM’s referral letters before processing birth certificates for the children.
“We will try our best to get the birth certificates within a month, but we make no promises,” he said.
BN Speaker Ganesan provides his story
May 16th, 2009All this while, we have heard Speaker Sivakumar’s points, now let’s have a look at the BN Speaker’s side of the story (From Malaysiakini):
In a proceeding that would have put wrestling bouts to shame, MIC’s R Ganesan was elected as the new speaker for the Perak state legislative assembly.
At a press conference in Ipoh today, the 57-year-old former state assemblyperson explained why he is the legitimate speaker and sheds a little light on the dark episode of May 7, when the state assembly convened for the first time since Barisan Nasional seized control of the state.
According to him, Pakatan Rakyat Speaker V Sivakumar, who was literally dragged out of the House, could not chair the motion to sack him (Sivakumar) because he was an interested party.
“We brought a motion to remove him. When we do that, he cannot table the motion because he is an interested party. It is against the rules of natural justice,” he said.
Ganesan said deputy speaker Hee Yit Fong then took over the proceedings from Sivakumar and allowed the motion moved by BN Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir to be passed, based on Article 36A of the state constitution.
“Naturally, the deputy speaker has to take the place of the speaker. This has been done correctly,” he said, adding that the motion was seconded by Hamidah Osman (Sungai Rapat) and supported by 29 state assemblypersons.
This was followed by the taking of oath and donning of the speaker’s regalia, said the two-term (1999-2008) Sungkai assemblyperson.
“So, 31 (state assemblypersons) elected me. How can you say I’m not the legitimate speaker? It was legally done. I have no doubts about it,” said the lawyer by training.
‘Sivakumar ignored my warnings’
On Sivakumar’s unceremonious ejection, Ganesan said he sought the help of the police to remove the Pakatan speaker after he refused to budge from the coveted seat.
He said that he had given Sivakumar ample warning before asking the sargent-at-arms to take action.
But when the sargent-at-arms was unable to break the Pakatan state reps’ human shield around Sivakumar, the police were called after Ganesan invoked his “residual powers” under Standing Order 90.
“Strangers can be allowed in the house. The Standing Orders (even) allow me let them speak during debates,” he said.
Bad Experience at Old Town Kopitiam IOI Mall
May 16th, 2009I was supposed to write about this last week, but forgot. Good thing Then reminded me again. It was JCard day at Jusco IOI Mall Puchong, so I went there to buy some things ..ahem….
In the midst of shopping, we decided to take a break and go for breakfast (we went early, at 8am to Jusco). So, proceeded to Old Town Kopitiam located on the ground floor (facing outside). Then and I ordered one of the breakfast sets each, just like some other patrons there. We waited, and waited, and waited, and waited…for about 45 minutes!. Only the drinks came early. My food also came within 15 minutes, but the mee hoon took ages. The Malay lady at next table walked off (I guess she came earlier and was waiting like us as well). Other patrons were also looking anxiously. Then, after inquiring from the waiter, found out the mee hoon stock was depleted, and they were preparing a new set!
The other grouse we had with the place is the inability to communicate with the workers – they smile and nod their heads, but most of the time misunderstand our question. We asked a simple question – how long would it take for the food to arrive – but no proper answer from 2 of the serving staff. I think its time for Old Town to go Malaysia Boleh and hire local staff.
We left without Then getting her mee hoon, and the counter guy had some common sense to not charge her for the drink.
We decided to boycott Kopitiam in IOI Mall until further notice.
Kannadi Thundughal on adultery
May 15th, 2009Yesterday’s edition of Kannadi Thundukal talked about adultery and marital problems. The story started with a lady, Mrs A, telling how her husband, Mr B, was fooling around with the Indonesian maid. The couple was doing catering business, and employed few Indonesians. The incident was witnessed by the lady’s teenage daughter who complained to her. One day, Mrs A caught them both red-handed. The husband left the house. It did not end there. The husband then hooked up with the lady’s brother’s wife!!! The lady’s brother (C) was ill and wheel-chair bound. The brother had 5 kids with wife (D), and yet the wife hooked up with Mr B who is relationship-wise is of brother status to her.
The lady mentioned how heartbroken her brother was until he even try commit suicide. The episode then aired interview with a guy (not sure from where) who talked about couples needing to understand each other. He said the blame could also be on the wife side for failing to understand psychical needs of the husband or maybe the husband is oversexed. He advised couples to seek counseling or medical attention in cases like this.
Imagine now, the impact on the children. What the teenage girl saw will forever scar her life – father in bed with another woman. Imagine the social stigma the family will carry. How in future, will the lady get her kids married off easily?
The story yesterday reminded me of someone I’ve known for the past one year or so. He is actually involved in one of the initiatives that I’m involved as well. I found out last week that the person has left his wife and kids, and now going around with another lady. Due to work reasons, the person was always on the move, while the family was located in another state. Thus he did not have much quality time with family for last few years. And now, he seems to have dumped the family for a foreign lady. It is sad to hear that while we are fighting for our community’s well being, we have such “educated” people creating bad name for us. Another broken family. Another single parent in the making. More headache for NGOs and community.
For me, if the marriage is not working out, seek help/advise and if really cannot work together, opt for legal separation. Ensure welfare of spouse and children is settled, and then you can romp around with whoever or whatever you want. Don’t leave things in limbo and create problem for others.
Then said : this kind of people should be shot to death.
