Plantation workers earn higher than poverty line

This is an interesting news because last year May, there was an increment of about 9 percent in the plantation workers’ wage under new collective agreement signed between NUPM and MAPA. The lowest a field worker can earn will be between RM500 and RM600.

Now, senator Kohilan who is the Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister says, on average an oil palm or rubber plantation general worker now earned RM750 a month while an oil palm harvester about RM1,100 a month, which is above the rural poverty line of RM740.

Actually poverty rate in Peninsular is RM691 and as far as I know have not been reviewed yet. for rural area, poverty line was found to be RM698. There are some others who indicate poverty rate to be about RM680. Some states also calculate their own poverty line, like Selangor who increased it to be RM1500. This means that workers are earning higher than the poverty line of RM691.

He further adds that:

Most plantation workers also do not have to spend on house rental,
medical charges (at the clinics) and pre-school education for their
children as all these facilities are provided by the plantation
management

What he says is true, but plantation workers (locals) have to think about the future – means they have to buy a house and service the loan. Groceries and education cost increases. These workers, like any other, must consider taking insurance for their children. Traveling, clothing, vacation and entertainment cost increases. I consider these new “expenses” as necessity since we are moving towards developed, progressive, and knowledge-based society.

I hope to see poverty line to be increased to a suitable amount that considers the need of 5 family members in current economic and social settings. Maybe to RM1200 or 1800 even.

Opps…KIMMA does it again

Is this another candidate for Malaysian Book of Records? Or maybe Guinness even? Can’t blame these guys for not trying. This time, KIMMA decides to join the protest bandwagon and says that it will organise a protest of 10,000 people (looks like have to close quite a few mamak shops for half day) and hand in memorandum (READ: fill up garbage bin) to PM’s Office. Its president Muhammed Ali Naina Mohd said that they had applied to be Barisan Nasional members five times, but had been rejected every time. Well, that’s pretty obvious. If you are applying for 6th time, it means the last 5 times failed.

It seems that KIMMA is one of the biggest loser since there were no Indian Muslim councillors, senators or MPs from Kimma.

Asked if they had considered joining the Pakatan Rakyat government, the president of KIMMA said it “is under consideration” but they had never applied.

I thought KIMMA is already IN BN by virtue of joining with PPP? KIMMA also asked for bumiputera status, but most likely not entertained.

Well, I guess Information Minister Shabery Cheek will be handing in his resignation tomorrow. I saw first 20 minutes of the debate only, but gave me a good idea of how it went on. I personally don’t trust both the debaters, but from the point of debating and handling the questions, I think the more popular guy had the edge.

Later from 10.20 till 10.40 pm surfed the net for initial responses. Nothing appeared on Star, Malaysiakini or NST sites, but 7 blogs were returned in Google blog search. All mentioned the samething, which I rather not write in here. But i guess the post title above clears the air.

As for the papers, I was wondering how the papers will write it since many, many Malaysians would have seen the debate. No chance to lie or twist the article. Malaysiakini and NST were first to report at about 10.50pm. NST declared no winner, while Malaysiakini did not talk about the content of the debate.

Hmm..wait a minute, didn’t Shabery say he will leave his fate in the hands of the PM? Can see a lifeline there.

ISA waits for Waytha if he returns

If one remembers right, the question of whether Waytha will be arrested if he returns was asked in parliament (June 26) but rejected by the Speaker on the grounds that it was a hypothetical questions since there was no information of such arrest warrant at that time.Today, Malaysiakini reported that the Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said that there is an arrest warrant for Waytha under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows detention without trial, but according to him the warrant was issued before he was appointed home minister.

I still remember some NGOs asking Waytha to come back and fight his cause here. Did this people know that the ISA was waiting for him or not? I guess not.

According to minister, there was a order to revoke his passport (I received a copy of the email instruction, which is unverifiable at the moment) by the previous Home Minister (no prizes for guessing who). But after Syed Hamid took over, he did not cancel the passport, so its still valid.

Syed Hamid did not clarify if the ISA warrant is still valid, but I guess we all can deduce this easily. Waytha will join his fellow friends in Kamunting if he returns.

Even yesterday the Deputy Foreign Minister said the Government would welcome Waythamoorthy if he wanted to return to the country and cooperate with the authorities in reply to Karpal’s question. Not sure whether he knew if arrest warrant was out.

But if he (Waythamoorthy) feels that he has done nothing wrong, he can come back

Earlier in May, Waytha said his passport was revoked, but the minister denied it. I see that the order to revoke was made, but not executed. Technically that makes the minister’s statement correct and Waytha’s statement wrong. Unless it was revoked and immediately “unrevoked”.
