As the statistics continue to roll out about the PSD (JPA) scholarship recipients for overseas programme, PSD says only cream of crop were selected while news of unsuccessful angry applicants emerged. MIC had to go begging as usual. PSD head gave an interview regarding the selection criteria on NST recently. Full interview is found below. Let’s look at some pertinent points:

He clarified that the full scholarship offer is for local studies, which was actually quite clear in the newspaper reports. Maybe some parents misunderstood it.

The overseas programme is very competitive. The criteria is 70 points for academic excellence, 10 points for interview, 10 points for family economic background and 10 points for co-curricular activities.

The criteria for foreign studies scholarship is revealed, but the director also revealed that 15000 applications were received, out of which 7500 qualified. and out of 7500, only 2000 got it. That’s nearly 4 students (3.75 actually) fighting for one scholarship (3.75:1). And it seems there were 6262 straight A students. » Read more: PSD provide scholarship criteria

BUTTERWORTH: The Government should implement the Bangsa Malaysia concept to give equal opportunities to all Malaysians, Hindu Rights Action Front national co-ordinator R.S. Thanenthiran said. He said the concept, which recognised a citizen not by his colour, religion or his cultural background, could help promote greater unity.

“We should give the Bangsa Malaysia concept a chance. Political parties should no longer be race-based. “Politicians should also stop using racial and religious sentiments that could disunite the people,” he said yesterday.

On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said it was important for Malaysians to identify themselves as Bangsa Malaysia and not by their race.

Thanenthiran also called on Indian youths to continue using tolerance, patience, love and peace in their approach to resolve problems.

“Similarly, we wish the Government will accept our requests to sit down and talk amicably about Hindraf’s concerns,” he said.

Selangor government takes the first step to snub federal government action by planning to provide aid for families of ISA detainees who are from Selangor. Possibly the case of  YB Manoharan is one of the strong reasons for this move. Will the other states follow suit?

Also heard that Bar Council also had started a fund for the family of detained lawyer (4 of the  Hindraf leaders).

The Selangor government will provide financial and welfare assistance to families of those held under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows detention without trial.
Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim said these measures would be taken up by the state government to help the wives and children of these detainees to ease their burden during the difficult period.  He added that his government will look into bearing the travelling costs for families to visit the detention camp every week.  At the same time, he said that children of the detainees may apply for state government scholarships to further their studies.  The wives too will be encouraged to look into various ways to become involved in businesses to help them earn a living, he said.  “Life can be difficult for them but they must continue to fight,” he said after receiving a memorandum from the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI) today.

DAP state assemblyperson M Manoharan is one of about 70 ISA detainees being held presently at the Kamunting detention centre.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has pledged to help the families of Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees by providing welfare assistance.  Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said several steps could be taken to help the wives and children of these detainees, to help them through difficult times.  The state government could bear the travelling costs for families to visit the detention camp every week, he said.  The children could get scholarships to further their studies, and ways can be found for the wives to become entrepreneurs.  “Life can be difficult for them but they must continue to fight,” he said after receiving a memorandum from Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI or Abolish ISA Movement) here on Monday.

MP Writes: Seeking solutions for the people
By : John Fernandez (DAP-Seremban)

I AM a founder member of the DAP and have been struggling for Malaysians since the party’s formation in 1966. I joined the late Devan Nair, Dr Chen Man Hin, Lim Kit Siang and Liew Ah Kim to found DAP but left the party for 14 years following differences with the leadership. I rejoined in 2000.

I served as state assemblyman for the then Rasah state seat from 1974 to 1978, have lost several elections as both a DAP candidate and an independent, and now serve as Seremban MP on a DAP ticket.

In all this time, I have seen, and continue to see, many issues come to head – issues afflicting my constituents as well as Malaysians in general. » Read more: Interview with John Fernandez MP Seremban

Not sure how many of us still remember a lad by the name of Krishnamoorthy. He became famous last year during Raya holidays after saving people from a sinking ferry. There were lots of brouhaha over the apparent lack of appreciation for him. He did get RM10K from Kiwanis, appreciation certificate from Transport Minister,  but he was interested in getting a better job. After that, no news about him. This time, he is awarded an Unity Chain (along with RM5k). Six others also were honoured.

PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Datuk Michael Chong were among seven personalities honoured for their extensive contribution towards unity, peace and harmony among Malaysians.

Social activist Lee, 62, was named Tokoh Perpaduan (Unity Hero) while Chong, head of the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department was awarded the Kalung Perpaduan (Unity Chain) by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The awards were given in conjunction with the launch of Unity Month yesterday.
With a bang: Najib hitting a giant drum to signify the launch of Unity Month on Sunday. Helping him is Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The other Tokoh Perpaduan was former Sabah Yang di-Pertua Tun Sakaran Dandai.

Other Kalung Perpaduan recipients were cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, better known as Lat, S. Krishnamoorthy, Nafisah Abdullah and Mohd Afzal Hamzah.

Sakaran was honoured for his active role in promoting religious understanding in Sabah.

Lat received the honour for educating the public on racial integration through his cartoons and animation series while Nafisah was honoured for saving a Chinese woman and her nine-month-old baby in a fire in Kota Baru last year.

Nineteen-year-old “ferry fire hero” S. Krishnamoorthy received the Kalung Perpaduan because of his heroic act in saving 18 lives during a ferry fire off the coast of Mersing last year while labourer Mohd Afzal saved a Chinese woman from being a snatch theft victim in an incident in Brickfields last year.

Najib also presented medals to five other heroes and heroines for their acts of heroism and service which cut across racial barriers – MCA Public Complaints Bureau head Datuk Michael Chong; cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid who is better known as Lat; S. Krishnamoorthy, who single-handedly rescued 19 people in the Mersing ferry tragedy; Mohd Afzal Hamzah, who came to the aid of a snatch theft victim and caught her attacker; and Nafisah Abdullah, who rescued her Chinese neighbour’s baby in a fire.

Krishnamoorthy, 19, said the award was an unexpected honour as he felt he was just doing what he had to do.
