DAP chairperson Karpal Singh had erred in law by citing a case that was unrelated to Islam and using it to criticise the Perak Sultan for ‘interfering’ with the transfer of Perak Religious Department director Jamry Sury.
MIC Youth chief S Vigneswaran said Karpal had cited Federal Territory Education Director and Others vs Loot Ting Yee (1982) which had nothing to do with Islamic affairs and was thus unrelated to Jamry’s case.
“How can Karpal, a distinguished lawyer of senior standing give example of an Education Department staff in a secular dispute with the case of Jamry which is directly within the scope of the religious department under the Sultan,” said Vigneswaran in a statement today. » Read more: MIC Youth points out Karpal mistake

If there’s Ketuanan Melayu, there is no reason why we should not have Ketuanan India or Cina, since PM’s interpretation was different with him relating it to economic success. However, for me, Ketuanan has an negative connotation, thus should not be used. It may serve to drum up support for political parties but if other races resort to their own Ketuanan cries, then political party involved should not complain or make threats of racial unrest.
Information Minister Ahmad Shabeery tries to related this ketuanan (supremacy) with the Sultan and Raja position as reflected in the Federal Constitution. I think that its misleading to relate supremacy with historics. Like it or not, monarchic systems is a dying breed. If not 50 years ago, it would have happened now or maybe in another 50 years. Less and less countries are still retaining their monarchy, demoting them to customary or symbolic roles. When 1000 residents gather and get hit by water canon and tear gas, BN can kiss its hopes away for the next election.
Obviously the parties involved – developer, toll operator, state government, federal representatives, JUPEM, lawyers etc., should identify the root cause of the problem. Is it the developer or toll operator? Why should residents suffer for others’ mistake? As we know, legal cases takes ages to reach a verdict, and that also can be appealed. How long should the issue drag on? Until next election or the one after?
