I reproduce the whole article from the Star today. Heard a bit over the radio yesterday night as well.

The main points discussed:

1. there will be a special unit to monitor Tamil schools, especially to help convert to full-aided status, and merge schools with less students. Rather than merging, relocation will be a better option.

2. AIMST to receive grants from government to sponsor students. I don’t think that only AIMST should be chosen for this purpose. There should another few more institutions to avoid calls of cronyism or favoritism.

3. taxi and bus permits.

4. better business opportunities and loans.

5. more places for vocational training.

6. lack of Indians in civil service.

7. getting PNB’s help in the unit trust investment for Indians. This, I suppose is related to the recent announcement during 9th Malaysian Plan Midterm Review.

8. University intake for Indians will not be review (not mentioned in the article below). Najib says the students must study hard in school to ensure better prospect in entering local universities.

This committee was established in the aftermath of BN being rejected by the Indian community in the last election. Thanks to the awareness created by HINDRAF, the community can now see that proposals by MIC is being taken a bit more seriously by the government.

Unit to keep track of Tamil schools

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will set up a special unit under the Education Ministry to monitor the development of Tamil schools as well as their problems.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the unit would identify the schools to be converted into fully-assisted schools as well as consolidate those which had an enrolment of less than 50 pupils.

“For these schools which will be consolidated, we will propose that dormitories and other facilities be built for the students.

“For schools which have too many students, cabins will be built as additional classrooms for them,” he told reporters after chairing a Cabinet committee meeting on social problems facing Indians at the Parliament building here yesterday.

Najib said the committee also proposed that an institute set up by MIC – the Asian Institute for Medicine, Science and Technology – be re-categorised as one of the five institutes to receive aid from the Government as a measure to boost the intake of Indian students into critical sectors like medicine and engineering.

The institute, he added, would then sponsor Indian students to pursue courses in critical areas in institutions of higher learning.

Other matters raised during the meeting included more taxi and bus permits for Indian companies, better business opportunities and easier loans for entrepreneurs from that community, and more vocational training places for its youths.

“We would also like to see more opportunities for Indians in the development of vendor programmes with companies like Proton and Petronas.

“The committee also notes the lack of Indians in the civil service. We will raise this matter with the Public Service Department,” said Najib.

Najib said the committee would also discuss with Permodalan Nasional ways to increase the Indian hold on equity in the Malaysian market.

Following the furore over Perak Sungai Rapat assemblyperson Hamidah Osman’s racial insult in the state assembly, the state UMNO and BN had publicly apologized.

In a statement, state Umno secretary Datuk Ramly Zahari said the
remarks of Hamidah, who is also Gopeng Wanita Umno chief, were
regrettable.

“As such, Umno and Barisan apologises to
those, especially the Indian community, who felt slighted or
offended,” he said yesterday.

“Although she has retracted her words at the state assembly,
it is felt that we should still extend our apologies in order to
maintain the good relationship among the races,” said Ramly.

“We hope it will be accepted with an open heart by everyone,” Ramly added.

In NST, the following is mentioned:

In a statement faxed to the New Straits Times office here yesterday
evening, Perak Umno liaison secretary Datuk Ramly Zahari said he was
instructed by state liaison chairman Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali to
issue a statement on the matter.

He said Tajol Rosli wanted the
matter dealt with quickly for fear it would affect race relations since
the issue had drawn flak from the public.

Ramly said Perak Umno
and the state Barisan Nasional regretted “the slip of tongue” by Sungai
Rapat assemblyman Hamidah Osman and “apologised to all quarters who are
unhappy with the remark, especially the Indian community”.

“Hamidah had retracted her statement in the state assembly.

“Nevertheless, to maintain a good relationship among the
races, we hope this statement of regret and apology will be accepted
with an open heart by all parties,” he said.

Ramly admitted that Hamidah had uttered a remark which insulted the
Indian community, but maintained it was merely a slip of the tongue.

Her statements caused much anger in the community, with many police reports being made and at least two protests being held.

MIC’s Samy Vellu also expressed unhappiness over her statements.

For the record, Hamidah had apologized 3 times publicly to community. Time to move on. We forgive, but not forget.

Questions over death at wedding function

While the earlier death at wedding function news caused lot of sadness, this report from Tamil Nesan raises more question. The 23 year old dead victim (updated: victim name is R.Mohan) was supposed to leave for UK to study aeronautical engineering. Well, back in my school days, students who went for this course usually had double digit number of As for their SPM.

Questions are also being asked why the policeman was carrying his gun, and why shots were not aimed at the legs or arms (well, I guess panic).

Now there’s a call for an inquiry into the shooting citing that eyewitnesses who were present alleged that warning shots were only fired after the student had been shot.

Meanwhile the boy’s uncle G. Murali said the family would not claim the body from the hospital until a satisfactory answer came from the police over the shooting. Murali said the boy’s father, elder brother and two sisters were still being detained by the police for investigations.

As financial difficulties start to sink in, the lawyer for the ISA detainees, Karpal Singh had argued for their release at the six-month review by the advisory board.Among the reasons are:

  • poor health (Uthayakumar)
  • their desire to return home
  • they did not pose a security threat
  • the hardship faced by their families due to their long absence from gainful employment

“If not released unconditionally, they should at least be released with conditions, so that they can return to their families and their work.”

– Karpal Singh

As provided under Section 13 of the Internal Security Act 1960, the advisory board at Kamunting is to review the detention order every six months, by listening to detainee testimony and considering reports by Special Branch and that filed by the detention centre. The board, with chairman Yaacob Sam and two other civil servants, will present its report to the home minister.

HINDRAF not helping Vasantha Kumar’s wife

This is a damaging statement to HINDRAF. They better clarify this remarks from Ms Vickneswary, wife of one of the 5 HINDRAF ISA detainees, Vasantha Kumar.

I am both disappointed and saddened as I have been left in the lurch
and receive no help or moral support from my husband’s Hindraf
counterparts

She claims that her most of husband’s Hindraf friends have abandoned her and her two daughters. According to her, other than Ganabathirau’s brother V. Raidu, none of the people currently
front-lining Hindraf had called or visited her. She finds it difficult to travel to Kamunting every weekend on her own, with two kids on tow.

According to Vickneswary, her husband was also disappointed
when she told him that only one or two of his Hindraf friends’ had
bothered to find out how she and their two children were doing.

Vickneswary
also said she was not receiving any financial aid from Hindraf and
added that she sometimes felt that her husband’s efforts and sacrifices
were in vain.

Vasantha Kumar’s house also went under auction recently.

I await their reply.

HINDRAF had clarified recently that they are not collecting any funds.

If we can remember, Vasantha was the one who was pressured by the police to admit to collecting money to fund terrorist activities. But Vasantha lodged a police report saying he was pressured to do so..
