boycott or show protest at national deepavali celebration

at first, i was thinking that those involved may call for a boycott, and indeed, SMSes was being sent around asking to boycott all deepavali celebrations organised by govt as a sign of protest. i even received 3 till today.

this seemed like a good idea at the beginning. but the last two days, something crossed my mind. what if the indian community used this kind of events to show protest by ATTENDING rather than staying away. go and enjoy the food, shake hand with the VIPs and tell them how much you are unhappy with the temple demolition, or whatever it is you are unhappy about. bring all your family members, organise buses and vans..same like when you plan to attend THR Raaga concert or football matches.

those interested can even prepared standard caps, t-shirts or button badges to be worn – with words like "selamatkan rakyat india" or "stop temple demolition" or "no more discrimination" or other such clever creative flavors, which can be easily understood by all those who are present. Hmm..that means english right?

Just a thought. I'll be back on Tuesday evening, so hope to see your replies then.

By the way National Deepavali celebration is on 11 November as mentioned by Bernama:

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) — The national-level Deepavali Open House will be held on Nov 11 at the KL Sentral parking space in Brickfields here. Culture, Art and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the event would exhibit the unique aspect of the Indian community in Malaysia. The public, including tourists, would be able to see the food, clothes, traditional games and decoration of the Indian community in this country. There would also be a "kolum"-making contest (contest to decorate floors), dances and traditional Indian games like kabaddi, he told reporters at his office here today. Rais said the Open House, to be held from 2pm until 6pm, would be people-friendly and provide equal treatment to everyone.Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to open the function. Between 15,000 and 20,000 people are expected to attend.

Adios!

Signs of devotion: Some of the completed lamps.

CLAY lamps or agal villaku that are lit on the night of the Festival of Lights illuminate the homes and hearts giving new reason for success, prosperity and love.

Master craftsman S. Kandasamy, 58, who can make 1,800 agal villakus from 8am to 6pm daily, explained that agal means within one’s hand while villaku means light.

Finishing touches: A worker preparing to pack the lamps.

“All Hindu homes must have the agal villaku as it is sacred and auspicious.

“Prayers are offered with it as the baked earthen lamps remind us to be humble,” he explained.

Other than lighting the lamps, buying jewelery and new clothes is a must, even something simple would do, as such a practice welcomes the goddess Lakshimi for prosperity.

i thought the demolition happened on tuesday morning! the ways it was done as if purposed want to destroy the deities and just make a mess. the walls were still there, the building structure was still there.  to me, looked like purposely want to provoke the anger of the people.

given two days to remove deities? what deities? haven't they been smashed up during the day?

Land allocated to rebuild temple

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor government has allocated a 10,000 sq ft piece of land in Shah Alam for the rebuilding of the temple it ordered demolished in Kampung Karuppiah.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu yesterday said the state government will also assist in its construction.

He said the demolition of the temple in Kampung Karuppiah, Padang Jawa, which started on Tuesday night, had been put on hold under orders from the prime minister.

This followed a meeting between Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.

It was agreed that the temple would be given two days to remove statues of deities and other religious artifacts.

Meanwhile, the Bar Council is asking why four lawyers representing the temple congregation on the demolition issue had been arrested.

A statement said lawyers P. Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, P. Waythamoorthy and Ganapati Rao were arrested in the course of carrying out their legal professional duties.

The lawyers had turned up at the Section 11, Shah Alam police station to represent their clients who were earlier arrested for hindering the demolition work and were reported to have been denied access to their clients.

Upon complaining to the police, they were arrested.

Bar Council vice president Ragunath Kesavan said: "The recently amended section 28A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) allows a detained person the right to communicate with a legal practitioner of his choice upon arrest.

"We are concerned that these arrested persons, including the four lawyers, were denied this right, which is a flagrant breach of the CPC."

The lawyers have since been released on bail.

i remember discussion about felicitating him with gifts and awards. i reiterate that giving him a chance for furhter education or better job is they best way forward. we have to look beyond short and superficial awards. a poor person would not be getting "datuk"ship, so we can forget that. only we are harping about his deeds, but the rest have moved on. soon, he will be forgotten.

perhaps those in position in MNCs or educational institutions can help to offer him a job or scholarship. if his ex-employer can invite him to join in a trip, he must be a good employee.

Family pride: Krishnamoorthy (centre), his mother Saroja (left) and his siblings (from left) Satyacelan, Nagamah, Chandrasekaran and Yogeswary looking at newspaper cuttings on Krishnamoorthy’s brave rescues at sea.

Although he received many accolades for saving lives during the Seagull Express 2 ferry fire off Pulau Tioman recently, S. Krishna-moorthy remains unfazed by all the attention.

“I am too preoccupied with earning a decent living to allow all the praises to go to my head,” he said when met at his home in Pandamaran, Klang, recently.

According to the 19 year old, his main priority is to earn enough money to make payment on his family car and house.

“My two brothers Chandra-sekar, 20, Satyacelan, 17, and I offer wiring services and sometimes it’s quite a struggle as work is scarce these days,” added Krishnamoorthy.

The youth who dropped out of school after completing Form 1 is the third son in a family of three boys and two girls.

"A good-paying job will help me ease my family’s burden" – S. KRISHNAMOORTHY

His sister Nagamah, 19, is jobless whilst the youngest Yogeswary, 15, is still in school.

Krishnamoorthy’s father B. Sandaran who works in a Tamil school and his factory worker mother P. Saroja take care of the family’s utility and food bills.

Krishnamoorthy hoped that the media highlight would help him get a job.

“That’s the best reward that I can receive as a good paying job will help me ease my family’s burden,” he added.

Krishnamoorthy found himself in the limelight after he selflessly handed life jackets to passengers and helped them off the burning ferry.

He had also ignored his own safety by repeatedly diving into the water to pull others to safety.

When asked what had prompted him to do so, Krishnamoorthy said it was due to compassion.

“I couldn’t just stand by and watch people struggling to get out of the water as well as get off the burning ferry,” said Krishna-moorthy who was there on a vacation with his former boss Phang Kee San and his family.

Samy Velu seemed to be quite ferocious today at parliment. MP for Tangga Batu (BN) who asked him about road connectivity to highways got it left and right. Really kena hentam. In his words "Saya sudah berumur 71 tahun. Saya tak takut dengan siapa pun". I think Tangga Batu really loose face. Anyway, his face was not shown on TV, probably to save his image. Better for him to hang himself than show his face in parliment any more. SV is unbeatable in parliment. sadly he lose to half-indonesian khir toyo over the temple. I'm sure SV won't forget this betrayal.

I'll try to post the hansard later.

I think the events from the preceding day has emotionally affected samy velu, that's why he wants to tunjuk belang.
