Ganapathi Rao as candidate for Kota Alam Shah state seat?

I’m not sure how many branches there are in Klang, but I guess around 30. And 8 of them reject Ganapathi Rao. With incumbent Manoharan Malayam almost confirmed to be left out, it is interesting to see who are the potential replacements.

Ganapathi Rao is Selangor DAP’s legal bureau chief and is involved with the Malaysian Indian Voice (MIV) group as advisor. And yes, he was projected into the limelight due to Hindraf. He also holds position as a director in the state-owned Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd and is an aide to Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.

Being voter in that constituency, hopefully I’ll get to see suitable candidates.

Meanwhile, Ganapathi replied as follows and another DAP official said the candidate list is not finalised:

Selangor DAP official V Ganabatirao today admonished those calling on the party not to field him for the Kota Alam Shah state seat, saying they were jumping the gun.

Reacting to statements by eight DAP branch leaders in Selangor, he said the objection was premature because the party had yet to announce the names of candidates for the coming election.

“I myself do not know whether I will be fielded to contest in Kota Alam Shah,” he told FMT. “Candidacy is decided by the central executive committee. It is too premature to speculate.”

He rejected his detractors’ claim that members of the eight Selangor branches were against his candidacy in Kota Alam Shah, saying the branch leaders were had their own agenda and were expressing their personal opinions.

“The objections are individual opinions of people with their own agenda,” he said. “The objections are not resolutions from the branches.”

Another DAP official confirmed that the party had not finalised its candidates’ list for Selangor.

Eight DAP branches here have called on the party leadership not to field V Ganapathirau (photo) as candidate in Kota Alam Shah state seat in the next general election.

The branches, all from the state constituency, warned the party leadership that the DAP would lose the seat if Ganapathirau, a former detainee of now repealed Internal Security Act, was fielded.

The DAP eight branches, with collectively some 500 members, openly opposed Ganapathirau are Taman Gembira, Klang, Teluk Pulai, Bayu Tinggi, Taman Chi Liung Indah, Southern Klang, Persiaran Raja Muda Musa and Ehsan.

The group spokesman Ivan Ho said they were all against Ganapathirau because he was not a local familiar with the party grassroots leaders and members, or constituents in the area.

Ho said Ganapathirau does not have close rapport with party grassroots in the constituency, a winning factor so crucial for a potential candidate.

He urged the party leadership to respect grassroots sentiments and not to force in parachute candidates like Ganapathirau in Kota Alam Shah.

“DAP members and constituents don’t know him much.

“The party should not push us to accept Ganapathirau.

“We don’t want him,” Ho, the Taman Gembira branch head, told FMT.

Kota Alam Shah incumbent assemblyman is M Manoharan, a protégé of DAP national chairman Karpal Singh.

It’s learnt Selangor DAP leadership under Teresa Kok planned to replace Manoharan, also a former ISA detainee, with Ganapathirau.

Ganapathirau is a staunch confidant of deputy secretary general and Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy.

Not an Indian hero

Taman Chi Liung Indah head K Yogasigamany reminded the state party leadership that time had lapsed to promote the Ganapathirau as a former ISA detainee and his so-called involvement in Hindraf Makkal Sakti.

He said DAP grassroots members and constituents know that Ganapathirau, who now leads NGO Malaysian Indian voice, was not a Hindraf leader.

“Constituents have realised that Ganapathirau was never the Hindraf leader or Indian hero.

“He is no more relevant for Indian community.

“It will be futile and fatal for party leadership to field Ganapathirau in Kota Alam Shah.

“The leadership should drop the idea altogether,” Yogasigamany told FMT.

DBKL disallow decoration at MHS event

This is quite surprising. I remember reading interview with new mayor where he talked about karma and all (sounded like a well-read and understanding guy), and then this news appears on FMT. Decoration like kolam is quite common even in shopping centers! Banana trees are usually put at the entrance – can see it at Hindu weddings especially at temples. Wonder what’s the reason for DBKL’s actions. Is it because of cleanliness factors or there are considered religious symbols? Or perhaps MHS wasn’t aware of such rules?

Senator S Ramakrishnan of the DAP today demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak over Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) decision to disallow cultural decorations to be put up in their hall for an event by Malaysia Hindu Sangam.

“Najib must investigate why an event officiated by his representative was marred by DBKL’s stupid act which hurts the feeling of delegates,” said Ramakrishnan in a press statement today.

“It is totally unbecoming of DBKL since they are under the Federal Territories and Urban Well Being Ministry that has a Hindu deputy minister,” said Ramakrishnan.

He was commenting on DBKL’s decision to disallow MHS from decorating the venue – a DBKL hall – with kolam, a colourful rice based decoration, and banana trees in conjunction with a conference which was held yesterday.

MHS had organised a conference to launch temple worship guidelines yesterday at the DBKL training institute hall in Cheras.

The conference was attended by about 800 delegates from all over the country with PM’s representative honouring the event.

The hall was rented for RM4,600 and an additional RM300 paid for DBKL staff manning the hall for the event.

The conference was supposed to be officiated by Najib but was subsequently delegated to Human Resources Minister Dr S Subramaniam.

Ramakrishnan also lashed out at DBKL for their lack of sensitivity.

“Why is DBKL afraid to allow such simple cultural decorations?

“DBKL is a public body that serves all Malaysians, so why did it abstain MHS from putting up biodegradable and easily disposal cultural decorations?

“If it is a rule not to allow any decorations by any user of the hall then that should have been made known at the time of hall booking and not one day before the event?

“This act of DBKL shows how they look down on cultural practices of Indian Malaysians,” said Ramakrishnan.

Hema Lattha volunteers to teach young students

A refreshing story indeed. Amidst news of selfish and entertainment seeking new generation, we still get some news on selfless acts by the youths.

Its not easy to spend your weekend for the need of others, especially the underserved communities and the less privileged.

Reminds me of our projects in those days where we did similar activities for primary school students, taught at SMC, organised talks for secondary school students. Those were the days…

SHE is no ordinary teenager. While many of her age would spend the weekend hanging out with their friends, 18-year-old G. Hema Lattha dedicates her time guiding and teaching boys from the Divine Mercy Boys Home in Kepong.

Hema said she got a deep sense of satisfaction in teaching at the home.

She started in March by teaching some Year 3 and 4 children at the home two days a week. After some time, she started tutoring a Year 6 pupil, who had only started going to school at 10 years old.

Hema spends an average of two hours every Saturday coaching the boy in all subjects with special focus on Math and Science.

“There are challenges but when I see improvement in the student, I feel happy.

“In school, they put him in the weaker classes and sometimes those students do not get much attention. Here, I try to help him as much as I can.

“Every time I leave the home after my session, I am happy that I am able to contribute something to someone,” said the A-Level student from Help Academy, who lives in Bukit Rahman Putra, Sungai Buloh.

Hema’s interest in voluntary work has a lot to do with her family, her involvement in the Interact Club while in school and her personal beliefs.

Good use of her time: Hema teaching some kids from the Divine Mercy Boys’ Home in Kepong.

While her parents are very supportive of her work, her involvement in her school’s Interact Club was a crucial factor in her landing herself at the Divine Mercy Boys Home as she first learnt about the home through a friend during one of the club’s International Understanding Nights.

“That’s how I first got to know about the home. When I finished school, I wanted to do some voluntary work… I just wanted to help some people with what I have.

“My mother helped me to look for a few homes and my father will send me over to the home before I got my driver’s licence.

“It also has to do with my ambition since I want to be a doctor.

“Doctors help people, and I want to surround myself in such an environment where I can help people. I wanted to see if it was the right thing for me,” said Hema.

Apart from realising what she was capable of, her stint at the home had also opened her eyes to other things.

For instance, Hema is very touched by how the boys at the home view life.

“Some of these boys know why they are in the home. But that doesn’t bring down their spirit as they are always happy and positive about life.

“It is great to see that they are so happy and content with what they have and I am glad to learn that from them,” explained Hema, adding that she would be teaching her student until he sat for his UPSR later this year.

Hema was also very thankful to the home coordinators for giving her a chance to help out at the home as it was a big learning experience for her.

The Divine Mercy Boys Home is in need of voluntary tuition teachers for its Year 2, 3 and 4 children in the subjects of Math, Science and Bahasa Melayu.

Teachers are needed during weekdays, preferably after 7pm. For details, contact 03-6272 3568.

So, congrats to those who secured a place in IPTA. As mentioned in the article below, give it a try. Don’t reject the place given to you.

The national MIC Youth Higher Education Bureau has called on Indian students to accept places in public institutions of higher learning (IPTA) and not reject them on grounds that it is inconvenient.

Its chairman Mahaganapathy Dass said that every year, about 250 Indian students failed to report to their IPTA, citing factors like distance, travelling expenses and suitable courses as part of their reasons for rejecting the offers.

“Despite being accepted, some students opted out because they were unwilling to study outstation or have no means to make the journey to their IPTA,” he said, adding that the bureau would be helping as many as 60 students from low-income backgrounds in covering their travel expenses to their respective universities this year.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UTM) economics student Vinodh Elamkovam said he found himself in the same dilemma when he received his acceptance letter in 2009.

The Alor Setar native, who lives with his uncle and grandmother, said he was reluctant to leave his family and had never been to Terengganu before.

“Moving far away and changing my lifestyle weighed heavily on my mind,” he said.

He finally decided to take up the offer after an uncle advised him not to give up on the opportunity.

Vinodh urged Indian students who had been offered places not to reject them for reasons like inconvenience.

Rama Murthi and Sri Arivesh win prize in Genius Olympiad

Syabas to these two boys!

GEORGE TOWN: Two 14-year-old students from SMK Kulim, S. Rama Murthi and R. Sri Arivesh, have done the country proud by winning a prize in the Genius Olympiad 2012 International High School Project Fair on Environment, in New York.

They won third place with their creation of an alarm system called “Neighbours Wonder”, in the competition participated by 246 students from 50 countries, which was held from June 24 to 29.

The gadget can help emergency users to ask for help from their neighbours when the wireless alarm system is installed parallel with other houses in a residential area.

Rama Murthi said the idea to develop the system was in line with the 1Malaysia concept mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, as it could foster the spirit of cooperation among neighbours, regardless of race.

“We spent about RM300 to create this alarm system and are proud to have won,” said Sri Arivesh.

Both were the youngest participants, compared to the others who were between 16 and 17.
