Cattle slaughtered at Parliment by insensitive MPs

Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin conveniently passed the buck back to Parliment by saying that already got approval.

S.K.Devamany also took the easy way out by saying it was too late when he found out about it.

After 50 years of living together, these people still don’t understand about their fellow Malaysians’ sensitivities. Does this show arrogance or lack of education?

This is the problem with these people. When they do it, it is “normal”. When others practise their culture and norms, it become “insensitive” to them. Definitely moronic and lame.

Was this function not announced earlier to the opposition as well? Perhaps they were not invited. Of course they will seize this chance to blame the BN and speaker for allowing animals to be slaughtered in a parliment.

Another record for Guiness perhaps? “First Parliment in the world to slaughter animals in it premises to celebrate Prime Minister’s wedding” category.

PM comments on Revathi’s crusade

Finally, we get some response from the top person himself regarding Revathi's crusade. Reading the Star's report, I was surprised to note that he "brushed off such claims as wild allegations." when asked about torture in these centers. Revathi may be a nobody, but what she mentioned was her own experience while at the center, and I seriously doubt it is merely allegations. Worse still, in NST, it is mentioned that "Rehabilitation centres are not for torturing, only counselling". Yeah, sure…and ice-creams don't have sugar in them too.

Let's pray that Revathi succeeds in her crusade against this evil, to be in the path of her chosen faith.

PM: Find out grouses of those wanting to leave Islam

PUTRAJAYA: The Prime Minister wants the religious authorities to find out the grouses of Muslims who renounce Islam.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he had repeatedly told the religious officers to listen to their problems, to learn why they want to leave the faith, and in the case of converts, why they wish to return to their former religion.

"Find out what they are disappointed with, why a Muslim convert would return to her earlier religion after the death of her husband," he told newsmen after opening the 18th Conference of International Islamic FIQH Academy here yesterday.

The Prime Minister, who was asked to comment on the spate of court cases involving people seeking to leave the faith, admitted that he did not know why "suddenly these things seem to be coming out one after another."

He recognised, however, that there was a problem and wanted to know the reasons why Muslims were leaving Islam.

He also said he had not heard of people being tortured at religious rehabilitation centres, and brushed off such claims as wild allegations.

'Religious authorities should listen to grouses'

PUTRAJAYA: Religious authorities should be prepared to listen to Muslims who wanted to leave Islam, the prime minister said.

"I have always told our religious authorities that they should be ready to listen to these grouses and solve the problem," Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said at a press conference after opening the 18th Conference of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy here.

The prime minister was asked to comment on a number of highly publicised cases of Muslims wishing to renounce their religion, the latest of which was that of 29-year-old M. Revathi, born Siti Fatimah Abdul Karim, whose profession of the Hindu faith earned her a six-month detention at a rehabilitation centre in Selangor.

She was released into the care of her Muslim parents on Thursday.

Abdullah said he did not know why such cases were coming up one after another.

On allegations of torture at the Islamic rehabilitation centres, Abdullah said he had not heard of such claims.

"Rehabilitation centres are not for torturing, only counselling."

In his speech at the conference, the prime minister said the Muslim ummah needed to derive the necessary juristic approaches to enable it to engage in new developments in the field of sciences.

He called on Muslim scholars to be innovative, a premise upon which the principle of ijtihad stood.

"It is always easier to take the path of least resistance, to simply say 'no' but in doing so, we may rob the Muslim ummah of the opportunity for progress. Instead, Muslim scholars must have the courage to study and contemplate the great issues of the day with wisdom and sincerity."

Muslim scholars, Abdullah added, must always approach religious interpretation in the best interests of the ummah.

"The law does not exist in a vacuum, it is a product of the world's view and the ethics of society.

"We must walk away from senseless polemics in minor matters and instead focus on the priorities of the ummah."

Speaking to reporters, the prime minister said he had proposed Kuala Lumpur as a venue for ulama to find ways of ending conflict in the Middle East.

"I have discussed this with Fiqh Academy president (Dr Saleh Ibn Humaid) and secretary-general (Muhammad Al Habib Ibn Khuja). The ulama should be given the opportunity to express their views on the conflicts and whether there is a necessity to hold discussions between the factions, politicians and governments."

Indian Progressive Front members are happy that the party will remain intact.

Party deputy president V. Senggutuan said the move will help the IPF eventually join the Barisan Nasional.

"But joining the BN is not our only intention. We just want to work together with the MIC for the good of the Indian community," he said.

He said the move to invite MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to open the IPF national conference was good as it would help improve ties between leaders of both parties.

Last month, unhappy IPF veterans and former members asked party president Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan to step down if he wanted to merge the party with the MIC.

They also wanted former secretary-general K.Panjamurthi to lead the party.

Ampang Pandan division deputy chairman P. Ragawan said those who had made an issue of the possible merger did not get positions at the divisional level.

"Our members wanted a younger generation to lead them. That caused some of the veterans to be sidelined. They were unhappy and created problems," he said.

Party vice-president V. Mathiyalagan said the announcement that IPF would not be dissolved indicates that Pandithan had the best interests of the party at heart.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu is a believer in the adage that one should walk the talk.

The MIC president announced a RM500,000 grant towards the construction of IPF’s headquarters in Serdang. The IPF still owes close to RM800,000 on the RM5 million building.

Pandithan later awarded Samy Vellu the title "Champion of Indians".

Samy Vellu, in his speech, also called for IPF members not to regard the Tafe college in Seremban and the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) in Kedah as MIC institutions.

"Please enrol your children in the institutions. Although we are in different parties, we still have the same blood," he said drawing loud applause from the floor.

Also present at the IPF general assembly were former health minister Datuk Chua Jui Meng, MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel, MIC vice-president Datuk S. Veerasingham, Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Suhakam Commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam.

The Indian Progressive Front will not be dissolved.

Instead, it will continue to work with the MIC towards the development and progress of the Indian community.

Its president, Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan, set to rest fears about a possible merger with the MIC yesterday by declaring that he would always remain "an IPF man".

He also quelled rumours about a possible return to the MIC which he left after a confrontation with MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, nearly 20 years ago.

"The question of my future is being asked. What is my future? What is the future of IPF?
"Today, I would like to emphasise that I would like to die an IPF man. IPF will never be dissolved. Instead, we will co-operate with Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and the MIC," he said.

The eagerly-awaited announcement was greeted with cheers by the 3,000 members who had gathered for the IPF general assembly at Menara PGRM yesterday.

Samy Vellu echoed Pandithan and said: "MIC wants Pandithan to continue leading the IPF. There is no question of the IPF’s dissolution."

Before the IPF general assembly, there had been wide speculation about IPF’s possible dissolution and Pandithan’s return to the MIC.

The rumours were stoked by Pandithan’s invitation to Samy Vellu to open the general assembly. Articles in the Tamil newspaper, Makkal Osai, also claimed that the IPF would soon be dissolved. Pandithan later said he would not take legal action against the paper as he claimed to have "not taken them seriously".

He also said the party would continue in its struggle to be accepted as a component of the Barisan Nasional and remained positive about IPF’s prospects, although he feels this could take time.

On IPF’s entry into BN, Samy Vellu remained non-committal. "I do not know. This is something we have only discussed in our hearts. We have no opinion on this for the moment."

While delivering his speech, Pandithan was interrupted at one point when Samy Vellu walked over to the podium to give him a warm hug.

Pandithan said he would work with Samy Vellu whom he considered as his political mentor.

"I will only leave you upon my death," he said.

The bad blood between Samy Vellu and Pandithan began in 1988 when Pandithan, who was then an MIC vice-president, was sacked from the party with 13 supporters, for holding a hunger strike in front of the MIC headquarters. They had appeared with a coffin, after being issued a show-cause letter for allegedly practising caste-oriented politics.

In August 1990, Pandithan formed the IPF.

Earlier this year, Pandithan and Samy Vellu buried the hatchet and both their political parties campaigned for the Barisan Nasional in the Ijok by-election on April 28, which was won by MIC’s K. Parthiban.

Former sawmill worker needs aid

UPDATE: i managed to talk to MCA Service Center and was introduced to Ms Ivy Choong of the Ipoh Love and Care Society, a well-known NGO in Ipoh.

According to her, the application for SOCSO is under progress, but the amount won’t be much. The society is in process of getting Ipoh GH to fund the operation. Since after introducing this problem to MCA, MCA has pledged to pay for the childrens education up to graduates, the only concern is living expenses. Mrs Bahlan is in advanced stage of breast cancer and needs to undergo operation and rounds of chemotheraphy. While the parents are at hospital, the children will be temporarily homed at a care center, under the watchful eyes of the society. According to Ms Ivy, the kids are well mannered and well brought up. The eldest girl is sitting for PMR, and all of them are studying well.

The family is currently living in a house (occupying one of the rooms). In such dilapitated conditions, the family still strive to live and take care of themselves well. They also don’t have proper meals, only eating once a day. I was sad after hearing this.

It is hoped that after surgery, Mr Bahlan is able to join back the workforce, however, as with all kinds of operations involving spine, there is always an element of risk.

The society has also got Bersamamu TV3 to come and visit the family. Expected to air in August. So far, the society had got 6 families highlighted in Bersamamu TV3.

A trust fund is planned to help the family with living expenses, since education is taken care of MCA. For those interested to contribute: Can do the following:

IPOH: When it rains, it pours. The adage rings true for former sawmill worker P. Bahlan.

Besides being diagnosed with a prolapsed disc and a pinched nerve which cause numbness and weakness in his limbs, Bahlan’s 48-year-old wife P. Meerah also suffers from advanced stage breast cancer.

Bahlan’s problem started in 2004 after an industrial accident at his Menglembu workplace.

A plank fell on him and hit his back, resulting in the spinal injury.

“My condition was confirmed by the Ipoh Hospital in 2005 after an X-ray.

“However, I have to delay the operation costing some RM7,000 to correct my condition because I have no money,” said the father of three schoolgirls.

He added that he stopped working in December 2005 when his condition worsened.

The family has been depending on the goodwill of family members and friends for their monthly expenses, which amount to some RM800.

Bahlan said he collected recyclable materials whenever he could, although he had difficulties in walking.

“I can get about RM100 a month from selling them,” he added.

Perak MCA chairman Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, who visited the family on Wednesday with other party leaders, pledged to adopt the couple’s three children and pay for their educational needs.

Perak MCA also donated RM5,000 to the family.
