IPF replacing PPP?

Hmmm..as far as I know, IPF’s entry into BN was blocked by MIC. After demise of IPF’s boss Tan Sri Pandithan, there seems to be some good fortune smiling on the party.

BN secretary general Tengku Adnan hinted so, saying that PM Badawi himself had mentioned it during the supreme council meeting:

Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had, at the coalition’s supreme council meeting last week, said it would seriously consider the IPF’s long-standing application to join the ruling coalition.

Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who disclosed this yesterday, said Abdullah made the statement when opening the meeting.

Tengku Adnan, who is the Umno secretary-general, said the possibility of IPF being accepted was very bright.

I am looking forward to welcoming IPF, which has always been our friend, as a mate soon, he said when opening IPF’s 16th annual general meeting yesterday.

Tengku Adnan said Barisan had always been thankful for the support shown by IPF, especially during general and by-elections.

Adnan said he did not see much difficulty in IPF being accepted as a member since it had always shared and believed in the Barisan spirit.

As Barisan and Umno secretary-general, I fully support the IPF application, he added.

The article in the Star also shows Samy Vellu’s son Vel Paari at the IPF function. Interesting.

However, there a slightly different yet crucial report in NST:

“This matter was brought up during the recent BN supreme council meeting as other parties, especially from Sarawak, had indicated their interest to join the coalition.

“The chairman said BN would consider their requests,” Tengku Adnan told about 500 IPF members who attended the party’s 16th general assembly at a hotel here.

“When I informed Datuk Seri Abdullah that I was invited by IPF to officiate its general assembly, he told me to go because they (IPF) are friends of BN.”

Star reports as if IPF is certain to be a BN member, but NST’s report seems to indicate there’s a long way to go.

This new turn comes at a time when the mosquito is making all kinds of noise that seem to irritate the big brother. So, would the mosquito be finally swatted?

BTW, IPF president (?) Jayashree says there are 300,000 members. I think MIC supposed to have 500,000 members. 800,000 out 1.7 million Indians accounted for. Assuming 60% are above the age of 21 (1.02 million), that means there’s another 420,000 Indians who would be members of other parties or not members at all.

IPF suspends its Deputy and Vice President

I heard the temporary (?) president Puan Sri Jayashree saying that “I have sent them a letter, they can appeal. They have 14 days..” or something like that. Sounds very much like Samy Vellu especially the “I” part.

Deputy and Vice suspended. Youth chief declared bankrupt, so asked to resign. What is happening to IPF?

IPF president Puan Sri Jayashree Pandithan said deputy president V. Senggutuan and vice-president M. Mathyalagan had been suspended for three months effective Nov 10.

Youth chief R. Ravi Shanker, meanwhile, has been ordered to resign from his positions in IPF after it was discovered and confirmed by the Insolvency Department that he had been declared bankrupt.

Jayashree said at Wisma IPF here yesterday that the party had issued letters to all three notifying them of their positions, which were decided during a party disciplinary committee meeting chaired by deputy president K. Murugiah on Nov 2.

She said Senggutuan was suspended as he had illegally chaired a supreme council meeting on Oct 12. Show-cause letters were also issued to council members who participated in the meeting.

Jayashree, who took over the presidency after the death of her husband and former president Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan in May, said she had cancelled the Oct 12 meeting at the last minute as several senior officials including herself were down with food poisoning.

Mathyalagan was suspended for issuing statements contradictory to the party stance, which Jayashree said were intended to create uncertainty within the party.

Ravi Shanker, on the other hand, has been given two weeks from Monday to comply with the resignation order, failing which his membership will be revoked automatically, she said.

“I must stress that these actions are taken as a disciplinary matter to safeguard our party from being misled by irresponsible parties,” Jayashree said.

On an earlier allegation by Senggutuan that she had used party funds, she said: “I assure you that ever since I took over in May until now, the accounts are in order and they are very transparent.

“Any problems (in the accounts) happened before I took over and it was Senggutuan who was handling the accounts at the time. So, he should be answerable for it.”

Jayashree also clarified that Wisma IPF is registered under the party’s name and not hers.

“We will have a supreme council meeting (on Nov 23) where our legal adviser, Selvam Shanmugam, will give all the details regarding the (status of the) building.”

IPF under control says Pandithan’s wife

Pandithan’s widow did hold the press conference as told earlier. Surprisingly, she said that:

I was elected as party president earlier this year by the party’s supreme council.

I thought there was supposed to be an AGM to confirm her position, but Jayashree said the general assembly will be held later.

Whatever. Anyway, Puan Sri Jayashree says that she’s in full control of the party. In her visit to several states, the party’s 380,000 members had pledged their loyalty and support to the leadership.

I’m determined to carry on focusing on eradicating poverty, solving welfare and health issues and creating an educated Indian society.

She blames it on IPF Bersatu, a splinter party which it seems is not officially registered. That’s why there’s a one million ringgit suit on the group.

She said a splinter group which had left the party years ago had been attacking her leadership to tarnish the name and image of the party. “This group, claiming to be leaders of IPF Bersatu, has been campaigning against us nationwide, saying it is the actual and legitimate IPF. “They have been deceiving the people and confusing everyone by using our party’s name, flag, letterhead and registration number.”

She said IPF’s checks with the Registrar of Societies showed that IPF Bersatu was never registered as a party or society and the group had been functioning under IPF’s name claiming to be its promoters.

“This is a theft involving the party’s name and symbols and neither Pandithan nor I have appointed anyone to be our promoters.”

She said the group’s activities had started before Pandithan died, adding that when he fell sick the group started tarnishing his name.

“Although Pandithan was upset, he did not want to take action against them as they were former party members and had taken part in the party’s struggle in the early days.

“But it is unfortunate that they continue to damage our name and reputation even after Pandithan’s death, giving us no option but to take legal action.”

IPF has filed a RM1 million suit against IPF Bersatu for using its name, logo and registration number.

IPF Bersatu is headed by former IPF secretary-general K. Panjamurti.

As for IPF’s future plan, it is still yearning to join BN and has asked to meet PM in September.

IPF drowning?

after the death of Pandithan, IPF have been very quiet given that it has split into to two, which I think is not good. There was supposed to be an announcement on long term plans, but nothing so far. Calls for AGM are not heeded.

IPF Bersatu, headed by former secretary general says the party is weakening due to leadership given to Pandithan’s wife.

“She is from India and with no experience. For the party’s solidarity, Pandithan, in his dying days, should have rallied round party veterans, including those outside the party, to take over.”

He said members were unhappy with the appointment of Jayashree as acting president.
“By appointing her, it shows the late Pandithan’s self-interest in safeguarding the RM3 million building housing the party headquarters.”

He felt that the only way out for IPF was to reunite the 380,000 members and former members under one roof.

Panjamurti, who claimed to have 200,000 former IPF members in his party, said: “The members want the two factions within the party to rejoin to restore their confidence in the party’s struggle.

“IPF Bersatu extended its hand of friendship to IPF but the acting president did not respond.”

He feared that the delay might weaken the party..

Meanwhile, IPF deputy president V. Senggutuan agreed that several hundred had left the party but could not say what the exact number was. He said some had joined Parti Keadilan Rakyat, Pas and DAP.

“I am now visiting various states to register members and give them motivational talks,” he said, adding that most of them were hardcore party supporters.

He said the only way to strengthen the party was to become a member of the Barisan Nasional.

“This will give us some focus. It will also give confidence to our members, who are mostly poor Indian families still mourning Pandithan’s death.”

IPF vice-president N. Sargunan said the party’s struggle was still relevant, having survived for the past 20 years without power or media support. He hopes IPF can join BN, but I don’t MIC will appreciate that.

“Our hope is that BN leaders will see our importance and accept us into their fold.

“There is space for two Indian-based parties in BN considering that there are so many coalition parties representing the people of Sabah.”

It seems the party has been quite dormant for some time, with lack of interaction between leadership and grassroot support. The acting president, Pandithan’s widow, madam Jayashree said that a press conference will be called for announcements on the party’s future plans.

By the way, IPF is suing IPF Bersatu for RM1 million for using its name, logo and registration number. The suit says IPF Bersatu is not part of the IPF, and as such has caused confusion among party members. IPF Bersatu is headed by former IPF secretary-general K. Panjamurti. IPF was set up by Tan Sri M.G.
Pandithan in the late 1980s.

No merger with IPF says Samy

Samy clarified that IPF should not merge with MIC since some of its (IPF) members were not ready, and that the IPF should instead support MIC. He further said that IPF should remain as a political to “carry out the aspirations and dreams of Pandithan”. As for IPF’s ambition to join BN, well I don’t think so Samy is that charitable! 🙂

It remains to be seen if IPF can also “rebrand” itself like many of the BN coalition members. It has good reasons to do so – lost its charismatic leader, party is being led by Pandithan’s widow at the moment, and its in limbo, since its support for BN had not seen any positive effects in the last election.

IPF can take this opportunity to join Pakatan as well. But Pakatan will not accept a raced-based party. They can merge with PKR or DAP. Or dissolve and join Gerakan or PPP if we look at BN.

It depends on the next General Assembly. Will Pandithan’s wife stand for presidency or make for others? Will there be a split in the party?
