PETALING JAYA: The announcement that public universities can now set up cultural societies has been given the thumbs up.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) deputy vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Wahid Samsudin said the move by the Higher Education Ministry would “promote diversity through integration.”
“It is important that we involve all races in different activities like the Chinese Lantern Festival and Ponggal so that we can be educated on each other’s culture,” he said.
Prof Mohd Wahid added that UKM had long upheld the practice of promoting racial integration through such societies.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed had in Parliament on Monday stated that public universities would now be allowed to set up cultural societies.
His deputy Datuk Ong Tee Keat said these societies would encompass a wide spectrum of activities, including language-related ones.
Universiti Malaya (UM) deputy vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Amin Jalaludin concurred that cultural societies were a good way to bring the races together.
“This will be a healthy move as it will make us truly Malaysian,” he said.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Chinese Language Society pro tem president Teh Yee Keong was happy with the move, saying it would enhance diversity.
However, he felt that students should have more autonomy in such matters.
“We should be given more freedom to decide whether a society should be set up or not,” said the Mandarin Studies student.
The Chinese Language Society, he added, had always been open to all communities and now had Malay students in its Mandarin classes and Chinese Chess Club.

Medical Students in Bali all sponsored by MIC, says Najib
April 10th, 2007ALOR GAJAH, April 9 (Bernama) — The position of the Indian community in the country has been improving under the Barisan Nasional (BN) government which looks after the interest of all races, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that based on his observation and visits abroad, many students from the community were endeavouring to improve their position and becoming professionals, thus bringing benefits to the country.
“I had met with Malaysian students in Bali and 80 per cent of them were medical students who were of Indian origin. It was also the same in Sulawesi and the University of Crimea in Ukraine.
“They were all sponsored by the MIC. The position of the Indian community is improving from time to time,” he said at a gathering of the leader with the people during the campaign for the by-election for the Machap state seat in Tebong, near here tonight.
Najib said although some of the Indian community were satying in the estates, they could be developed through the education system provided by the government to improve their standard of living.
“Thus, the (Indian) community must continue to vote for the candidate who would always champion their cause, namely Lai Meng Chong from the Barisan Nasional and not the candidate who only knows how to speak but cannot provide any assistance,” he said.
Najib, who is also the BN deputy chairman, believed that the Indian community, right from the days of the Alliance up to the BN, had given their undivided support to the ruling party.
“Can people like Nallakaruppan (who is now a leader of the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat) help us? Let us not listen to issues which have nothing to do with us,” he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said any problem should be referred to the elected representative, and subsequently to the state government, and then to the federal government or himself to be resolved.
There are about 1,403 Indian voters in the Machap state constituency with the majority of them living in Tebong, in the oil palm plantation.

SEREMBAN: Indian youth should strive to enrich themselves with education as it is the gateway for the betterment of the community, MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran said here.
He said education is important to upgrade the socio-economic and living standards of the community.
Speaking at the 14th state MIC Youth convention here late Saturday, he said it is also the agenda of MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to champion the Tamil schools as well as to reduce the number of dropouts from these schools.
“It is the MIC’s wish to ensure that the Tamil school students, mainly from the low-income group, were given an opportunity to compete on a level playing field with the national schools,” he said.
Vigneswaran, who is the parliamentary secretary of the Youth and Sports Ministry, said poverty, lack of infrastructure facilities and lack of teachers should not be a barrier for students to succeed in education.
He said that more Indian youth have been allowed to participate in vocational courses in government skills training institutes in the country.
He also urged the youth to provide proper guidance to the younger generation to ensure that they were in the right path.
“Today’s youth should have awareness, education, vision, spirited, creative, leadership qualities and good character,” he said.
Vigneswaran said the youth should be committed in taking the opportunities available for youth in the country.
“They should not be sloppy, lazy or have a tidak apa attitude. Many still hope for the opportunities to come to them,” he said.
State MIC chairman Datuk T. Rajagopalu, who was the guest of honour, said the youth wing had played a crucial role in attending to the problems of the needy.
He said that Teluk Kemang youth division had organized more activities last year and announced a RM2,000 incentive for them.
“I hope this would encourage the other seven divisions to have more activities and try to win the special incentive next year,” he said
