Do you remember this case? 3 girls drowned last year. You can read more articles on the Kampar Tragedy here. The court case is pending.

The parents of the three primary school pupils who drowned in the Kampar River after the bridge they were on collapsed on Oct 26 last year have finally received a total of about RM76,000 in donations collected from various schools in Perak.

The three girls who drowned in the incident were N Dina Dewa and M Davadharshini both aged 11, from SJK (T) Mambang Diawan in Batu Gajah and V Diviyasari, 12, from SJK (T) Gopeng.

They were among 22 pupils crossing the suspension bridge (left), from the SK Kuala Dipang primary school back to a ‘1Malaysia’ camping site across the river when the bridge gave away at 10.30pm.

Today, lorry driver T Nathan, father of Dina, and K Mageswaran, father of Davadharshini, displayed the cheques they received at the PKR office in Gopeng. K Vasuthavan, father of Diviyasari, could not be present as he was working in Singapore.

The two parents said they received their cheques from the headmaster of the SJK (T) Mambang Diawan Tamil school last Friday.

Both Nathan and Mageswaran received RM25,312.55 each. The parents said they were aware that donations were being collected from various schools, but were unsure when the state education department would hand the collected amount over to them.

Several observers have pointed out that the donations may have been held back from the parents out of spite, in light of the settlement of a lawsuit that the parents had filed against the department.

The handing over of the donations to the bereaved families and the release of the federal government’s findings into the bridge collapse tragedy were highlighted to Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong when a Pakatan ad hoc committee, headed by ousted Perak speaker V Sivakumar (right), visited Parliament on July 12.

The visit apparently proved fruitful as the donations collected were then ordered to be released by the authorities, though there has been no word yet on the release of the government’s findings into the tragedy.

Pakatan had disclosed on Nov 16 last year their findings of the tragedy and have urged the government to officially announce their results as well.

The parents of the deceased children have filed a RM105 million civil suit against SJK (T) Mambang Diawan and SJK (T) Gopeng where two of the children studied, the Kinta Selatan district education office, the Perak Education Department, the Education Ministry, the commandant of the 1Malaysia camp, the sponsor of the bridge’s construction, the contractor and the Malaysian government.

They also want the Ipoh High Court to compel the government to reveal their findings of the bridge collapse tragedy.

The families’ suit is coming up for mention at the Ipoh High Court on July 28.

12 new campuses but not for all to benefit

UPDATE – Today’s Star reports that the “The construction will be fully-funded by private companies, with the project cost for each campus not exceeding RM300mil” according to Higher Education Minister. Wow, I wonder which private companies are so benevolent to spend a collective amount of RM3.6 billion, and what’s the catch. And if these are companies with the public as shareholders, then maybe the shareholder should start asking questions on how RM300 million can be better utilised. Maybe should boycott such companies. – END UPDATE.

What would you do if you are a believer in justice, fairness, equality, and pray to God? Build campuses at cost of RM300 million each that would only benefit certain groups, or benefit everyone?

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) will build 12 new campuses by 2015, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

He said this was in line with UiTM’s target of having 200,000 students in five years’ time.

The construction of six of the campuses have been approved while the rest are still are at the discussion stage prior to the Cabinet’s approval, he told reporters after the earth-breaking ceremony of UiTM Johor campus in Pasir Gudang here Saturday.

Mohamed Khaled said besides Pasir Gudang, other campuses would be built in Pekan, Dengkil, Tapah, Jasin and Seremban Tiga.

He said each campus, which would be built at the cost of RM300 million, would enrol between 4,000 and 5,000 students while each hostel could accommodate 2,000 students. On the Pasir Gudang campus, he said it would be completed in three years’ time and would offer diploma in engineering (civil, electrical, chemical and mechanical), and diploma in business studies.

12 x RM300 million = Rm3.6 billion for just one group of people. And the rest scrape the bottom of the barrel is it?

Why not build new campuses for UM, UKM, UTM, UTEM, UNIMAP, UPM, USM, UNIMAS, UMS, etc?

Yeah, we support 1Malaysia.

On an hindsight, I think 1Malaysia is the most misused and abused word in Malaysia, at the moment. Everything also, shout 1Malaysia. Get something, its due 1Malaysia. Don’t get something, say not following 1Malaysia. Rakyat is smart already 🙂

Yet another scheme for unemployed grads

Today, HR minister (does he look younger by 30 years now? ) announced a program called GEP – Graduate Employability Program, a special training program  to “equip fresh and unemployed graduates with skills required by the industries”. RM10.5 million had been allocated and is managed by PSMB (HRDF).  There are six main skills to be focused on: ICT; competencies; transferable skills which include communication, analytical thinking and problem-solving; relevant working experience; exploring new route for their career; and job placement. The target group would be diploma and degree holders who had been unemployed for at least three months after graduation.

“The GEP’s aim is to increase the skills and competencies of graduates to prepare them for the job market with higher salaries and to assist the less fortunate graduates who cannot find employment due to lack of skills,” he said when launching the GEP here.

…”We will select the first batch of 1,000 graduates for this programme and they will undergo training between five and six months,” the minister said.

He said the training would include three components – classroom training; attachment; and job placement.

“The attachment component provides hands-on learning environment and because of on-the-job experience, it makes its easier for trainees to apply what has been learnt in the classroom to where they are attached to,” he said.

He said the government would bear the course fee for the graduates who would also be paid a monthly allowance of RM500 during the training.

He said on completion of the GEP, the trainees would secure employment almost immediately.

Great news indeed. No doubt about it. I’m happy for the graduates who couldn’t/didn’t/wouldn’t  learn proper stuff in IPTA/IPTS due to a variety of reason (wrong course, outdated syllabus, personality problem, laziness, not focused, language problem, lecturer not good, AUKU, etc.) being given second chance.

You can download the form from HRDF website (but its not available or I can’t find it, as of 12.45am 18 July 2010)

But aren’t there similar schemes already? Remember GEMS?

The Graduate Employability Management Scheme (GEMS) is a government capacity building initiative to equip unemployed graduates with commercially useful skills and experiences that would enhance their employment opportunities. It is part of the RM7 billion stimulus package announced by the then Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Razak (who is currently the Prime Minister), to keep the economy of the country ticking. GEMS is expected to train up to 12,000 graduates over a period of two (2) years.

This progamme is based on the Graduate Employability Enhancement (GREEN) Programme which was organised by Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah) with the support of various Government-linked companies (GLCs). Moving forward, Khazanah was given the mandate by the Government to manage GEMS and support the government’s initiatives to reduce unemployment among graduates. Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Razak launched the GEMS Programme on 13th March 2009 in Putrajaya.

Responsibilities

  • The GEMS programme is divided in two parts. in the first part, graduate will undergo a two and a half -months in-house training whereby they will be exposed to skills and qualities that will help improve their confidence and ability to communicate, as well as to manage tasks and responsibilities that are importatnt in their work life.
  • This will followed by a six-month on-the-job training at various organisation and institutions including GLCs under the second part of the programme. it will provide valuable working experiences and knowledge to support the participants’ future growth.

Requirements

  • Open to Malaysians who have graduated with recognised Degree.
  • Fresh graduates/Entry level applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • Obtained a minimum CGPA rating 2.5 or its equivalent.
  • Applicants must be below 27 years old.
  • Applicants with academic qualifications higher than a Bachelors’ Degree are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing to undergo on-job-training at participating organization nationwide.

Allowance

Participant will receive monthly allowance of RM1000 during the training programme.

Yeah, there are some similarities and also differences (allowance, duration, location of training among them) between the programs (bro Novinthen says its different scope and agenda). For me, its just some minor differences which can be streamlined. I hope the poor graduates are not confused on which to apply for. As it is, they graduated with much difficulty form IPTA/IPTS and under pressure from not securing a job. They may end up applying for all schemes, and create unnecessary paperwork for the staff. Maybe the ministry should think about consolidating the schemes. Maybe can save some money too. Saving money schemes (especially the ones that don’t involve price hikes -i used price hike because its shorter to type than the s-u-b-s-i-d-y  r-a-t-i-o-n-a-l-i-s-a-t-i-o-n  or  u-p-w-a-r-d  p-r-i-c-e  a-d-j-u-s-t-m-e-n-t ) would be liked by rakyat.

MIED loan given out

Surprising news indeed since there wasn’t any news of the loan application being open in recent times. Maybe I missed it.

Anyway, RM96 million has been given out since 1984, which is 26 years period. That’s about RM3.69 million per year. Its also an average of RM10105 per student. For the current session, RM1.5 million for 189 students averages about Rm7936 per student.

The Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) has disbursed study loans and grants worth RM96 million to 9,500 students since 1984, its chairman Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said today.

Samy Vellu, who is also the MIC president said MIED would continue to assist needy students in pursuing their education at tertiary level.

“At the same time, I also urge recipients who are currently employed to repay their loans so that we can help other students,” he said before handing out MIED study loans worth RM1.5 million to 189 students at the MIC headquarters here.

He said to-date, the MIED had managed to collect more than RM38 million from previous MIED recipients.

“We managed to recover this amount following several reminders and legal notices to some loan recipients,” he said.

He also said the MIC owned-Tafe College in Seremban managed to create more than 40,000 professionals to-date.

“The MIC will continue to place priority on education amongst the Indians,” he said, adding that he was happy that the target set by the party to create a graduate in each Indian family has gained momentum.

“In fact, there are more than one graduate in a family and many of them are professionals. The MIED itself has helped thousands of students to become doctors and lawyers,” he added.

Darvena and Teoh get PSD scholarship

Story of two students (Darvena and Teoh who managed to get PSD scholarships after intervention or appeal.

Having a paralysed mother made top student S. Darvena Pillay want to become a neurosurgeon so she could help other disabled people.

And she is now one step closer to fulfilling her dream thanks to a scholarship from the Public Services Department (PSD).

The 18-year-old, who scored 10As in the SPM, was initially unsuccessful but was awarded a PSD scholarship upon appeal to do a pre-medical foundation programme at the Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences and will later pursue a medical degree at a local university.

“After qualifying as a doctor, I will work in Malaysia because it is important that Malaysians serve our country,” she said.

“If we don’t step up to the plate and give back to the country that has given us so much, who will?” she said with a bright smile.

Darvena is an all-rounder who has over 50 certificates of co-curricular participation and achievement.

“I was a state-level debator and had took part in many competitions at school, district, state as well as national level,” she said.

Darvena’s mother became paralysed 11 years ago after giving birth to her youngest child.

Darvena’s father works as a water treatment plant operator and earns just enough to feed their family.

“This scholarship will greatly ease the burden on my family, particularly my dad as he has to take two jobs to support myself, my three schoolgoing siblings and my paralysed mother,” she said.

A student who failed to get a government scholarship twice to pursue higher studies is now rejoicing, thanks to the MCA.

Teoh Bee Kah, 18, who failed to get the scholarship earlier, has been granted a Public Service Department scholarship after she sent an appeal letter to MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Teoh, who was born with the nystagmus condition (a form of involuntary eye movement), was awarded a full scholarship for an 18-month Foundation in Business Studies course at the University of Nottingham’s Malaysian campus in Semenyih.

The former Convent Pulau Tikus student, who is now studying in Form Six at St Xavier’s Institution, will start the course on July 8.

“I was verbally guaranteed a National Scholarship on March 19 when I went to Putrajaya to receive an award for being an outstanding student.

“However, the name list came out a week later without my name. So, I thought I would be accepted by the PSD. But my name wasn’t in that list either when it came out on May 21.

“I cried for two days after that because I was so disappointed,” she said after receiving a congratulatory letter from Bagan MCA division Youth chief David Chua on behalf of Dr Ng at the Penang MCA headquarters on Pahang Road here yesterday.

Teoh, who scored 4A+, 3As and 3A- in last year’s SPM examination, said although her first choice was Psychology, she was nevertheless grateful for the scholarship.

She said her nystagmus condition was made difficult with her short-sightedness.

“My eyeballs are constantly moving and it is difficult for me to focus. Doctors told me my condition cannot be corrected with spectacles or surgery,” she said.

Her father, Lye Chuan, 58, said she did not let her condition stand in her way.

“She didn’t attend any tuition classes. Her hearing and memory are excellent too,” said the fisherman.
