MIEd to sue 4000 borrowers

MIED is getting tough since its not being able to get the borrowers to pay back. I remember few years back, MARA took some drastic measures like publishing the defaulters name, asking to be blacklisted so that cannot leave the country, sending lawyer notice etc. MIC may have to do the same as well in MIED’s case.

9000/12,500 is a mindblowing 72% default rate!

RM90 million / 9000 students is averaging RM10,000 per student.

ABOUT 4,000 students who have failed to repay their loans to MIED, theducational arm of the MIC, will be blacklisted and taken to court, reported Tamil Nesan.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said that the MIED had given educational loans to 12,500 students since 1984 and about 9,000 had failed to repay their loans which amounted to RM90mil.

He said MIED decided recently that in future, students would only be given a maximum of RM40,000 for the first year and for the subsequent years, it would depend on their educational grades.

He said MIED also decided that parents should start repaying the loans after six months even when their children were studying and need not wait till they completed their studies.

However, the part where parents have to start repayment after 6 months of loan disbursement is a bit hard since some of the borrowers may be from low income families.

New BN MB Dr Zambry acts fast indeed. He first announced RM30k for Yuk Choy Primary School orchestra, to which the crowd gave a rousing applause says Malaysiakini.

He also visited Arulmigusubramaniam Temple in Gunung Cheroh at 8.30am on Thaipusam day and during a short speech to the temple-goers, pledged RM100,000 for the temple.

That’s 13ok in 24 hours. Looks like the Chinese and Indians can look forward for more short-term goodies!

Now only want to have second cabinet committee meeting?

Guess what, the first meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Indian community development was held back in July last year. After that it was supposed to held in September. Strangely, there was no news about the committee meeting anywhere. And now, Star reports Samy Vellu as saying that the second meeting will be held in 23rd February. Let’s see the article:

Issues affecting the Indian community, including equity participation, are likely [LIKELY??? Then what the point of having the committee???] to be discussed at the second meeting of the Cabinet Committee for the Development of Indians on Feb 23, said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

He said the committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, would discuss the MIC’s proposals, including the setting-up of a mechanism to increase Indians’ equity participation from the current 1.2% to 3% in 2020.

… The MIC had suggested that a mechanism be established within the government-owned Permodalan Nasional Bhd to assist poor Indians to buy shares through 50% grants and 50% loans from the Government [So, will be it finalised in the 2nd meeting or pushed to next meeting?].

Samy Vellu said several decisions were taken at the first Cabinet Committee meeting last July 1 including streamlining the procedure for bringing in Hindu, Sikh and other priests from India [which took how long implemented?], agreeing to a policy of converting all partially-aided Tamil schools to fully-aided schools [note the words – “agreeing” to a “policy”] and increasing the number of Public Service Department scholarships for Indians studying in foreign universities to 163 students [its well documented that this happened before the meeting after MIC leader went to plead with the PSD].

Other decisions include enabling those who scored 9As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination to receive scholarships to study in local universities [this is for all students, not Indians only – says MCA!], recognising the MIC-run Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University as among the institutes where scholarship students could enrol and agreeing to set up a special task force under the Home Ministry to deal with the 30,000 Indians born in Malaysia who are still without documents [hopefully the task force will present how many cases it has solved and the problems faced].

He said the Government had also approved RM80mil over the last 18 months to redevelop 50 Tamil schools which were in a dilapidated state.

And if you noticed, Samy said the RM80 millions for schools were to “REDEVELOP” Tamil schools. Can he specify how much of the funds is for “repair” works and how much is for constructing “new” buildings? There’s a big difference between the words being used. For example, in SJKT Vallambrosa, the money given was for “repairs” and not for adding new buildings. So, how to solve the problem of overcrowding in the school?

Federal development fund only for BN areas?

I’m curious, is the federal government’s development fund only for BN controlled STATE constituencies only? Or is the report below not telling the whole story? Perhaps if the BN assemblymen are not getting development fund from Pakatan Rakyat Perak state government, then its quite understandable. If not, then the BN controlled areas will be receiving more funds than areas controlled by Pakatan assemblymen. This can be construed as revenge or even bribery, something that interested parties may call MACC to investigate.

Is it the same in other Pakatan held states? If like that, how about Kuala Lumpur which has all but one MPs from Pakatan? The funds will be under FT Ministry and various other government agencies?

If its untrue, NST better provide explanation as this kind of statements can misled the public and create unhappiness towards BN.

Perak BN Assemblymen to receive development fund soon – Zahid

Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen in Perak will receive their respective development fund soon, totalling RM300,000 each, from the federal government, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

“The allocation has been approved and will be distributed soon to the 27 assemblymen,” he told reporters after attending a gathering with the people organised by the Perak Federal Action Council here.

Ahmad Zahid said that apart from the development fund, each state constituency would also be allocated with RM1 million in the form of public amenity projects, which would be channelled through federal agencies and departments.

He said this when asked to comment on complaints among Umno assemblymen, especially those who lost in party divisional elections last year, that they had yet to receive the allocation.

Ahmad Zahid said the allocation for public amenity projects would be channelled throughout the state, including in areas held by Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen.
