HINDRAf coordinator Raidu clarified that the group is not collecting any donation from the public and has stopped doing so since a long time ago.

Hindraf does not approve of such methods as we have stopped collecting funds from the public a long time ago

Raidu also mentioned that the ISA detainees informed that they were being accused of collection funds for covert activities like terrorism. Raidu said that about RM68,000 was collected last year and was spent for bail for those detained participating in rallies.

Both Vickneswary (wife of Vasanthakumar) and Buvaneswary (wife of Ganabatirao) said they had not received any of the “donations”. Vickneswary said her husband’s house would be up for auction today. She was unable to pay the RM600 monthly installment.

Pity that Vasanthakumar’s house is going under the hammer. I think something should be done about this.

Less MIED loans due to defaulters

Generally, most education funds have problem collecting back the loans. For example,  PSD, MARA, PTPTN, and also MIED.  MARA and PTPTN are improving after focusing on legal action and improving their system.

MIED said that number of applications is increasing (obviously!) but due to financial constraintst caused by loan defaulters, less applications will be approved.

According to Samy Vellu, non-performing loans (NPL) had been reduced to 17%. Previously, it only 34% actually made repayment! Probably the plan by MIED to bring defaulters to court prompted some of them to pay back.

For this session, MIED handed out RM1.5 million to 185 students. 90 of those students are pursuing medicine. In March this year, MIED gave RM2.7 million to 289 students.

More details from NST:

Besides legal action against defaulters, Samy Vellu said the loan programme had been restructured by allocating funds on a yearly basis and not for the duration of the course.

For instance, if a student pursued a three-year course, MIED would allocate funds for the first year only.

Money for the remaining two years would depend on the student’s academic performance and additional funds provided by the student’s family.
He said this after presenting MIED loans to 185 applicants, amounting to RM1.5 million at the MIC headquarters yesterday. Of the 185, 90 will pursue medicine.

He said since the loan programme was established in the 1980s, about RM90 million had been disbursed to 8,500 students to pursue tertiary education.

Education Ministry to draw mini blueprint

Hmm…Education Minister can ask others about their plans, but own ministry now only  “WOULD” draw up a special “MINI-blueprint”. Reminds me of the a 50 years old gigantic pot calling the 100-days old small kettle black.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the ministry would draw up a special “mini-blueprint” focusing on the development of various types of schools receiving capital grants. This, he said, would be incorporated into the main blueprint to form a complete masterplan and would ensure that the schools receive the same attention as national schools.

“This shows how much we value Chinese schools, Tamil schools, mission schools and religious schools. “This is part of comprehensive measures my ministry is taking to help all students, regardless of what type of school they come from,” he said.

… According to Hishammuddin, the mini-blueprint will address the welfare and development needs of the schools. Aspects such as the development of basic facilities, allocation of land for building new schools, upgrading of infrastructure and other financial needs will be looked into.

Perhaps that’s what Samy meant when he announced recently that Education Ministry “agreed in principle” that all Tamil schools will be converted to fully-aided status. Meanwhile, PPP’s Deputy Minister Murugiah is busy talking about Tamil Schools Fund. What is actually happening? Can these two parties sit down and talk first before making further announcements that may confuse the community?

164 PSD scholarships awarded to Indians

Something fishy. Samy said that number of scholarship awarded to Indians this is year (161) is more than double of last year, but Dato S.Subra said last year it was 120 students. Anyways, it has been clarified that 164 students had been given scholarships, up to Friday noon. Meaning more to come?

Out of the 164, 53 obtained medical seats.

Rather than resting on its laurels, MIC better start a pressure-cum-thinktank group to ensure this problem does not repeat next year. Perhaps they can set-up a clearinghouse or one stop centre for students to submit their application via MIC. As long as it does not create avenues for cronyism or corruption within MIC (wishful thinking?) Obviously the preferred solution will involve revamping PSD’s selection procedure, something quite impossible given the current political scenario.
