Alamak! Looks like Minister Nazri had unwittingly proven what parents and disgruntled Malaysians suspected all along. 10% quota allocation for normal Malaysians for PSD scholarships all this while. He clarified that 7282 students were shortlisted from 15220 (previously, PSD director gave a rough estimate of 7500 out of 15000 students).

PSD provide scholarship criteria
May 28th, 2008As the statistics continue to roll out about the PSD (JPA) scholarship recipients for overseas programme, PSD says only cream of crop were selected while news of unsuccessful angry applicants emerged. MIC had to go begging as usual. PSD head gave an interview regarding the selection criteria on NST recently. Full interview is found below. Let’s look at some pertinent points:
He clarified that the full scholarship offer is for local studies, which was actually quite clear in the newspaper reports. Maybe some parents misunderstood it.
The overseas programme is very competitive. The criteria is 70 points for academic excellence, 10 points for interview, 10 points for family economic background and 10 points for co-curricular activities.
The criteria for foreign studies scholarship is revealed, but the director also revealed that 15000 applications were received, out of which 7500 qualified. and out of 7500, only 2000 got it. That’s nearly 4 students (3.75 actually) fighting for one scholarship (3.75:1). And it seems there were 6262 straight A students. » Read more: PSD provide scholarship criteria
Aid for ISA families
May 28th, 2008Selangor government takes the first step to snub federal government action by planning to provide aid for families of ISA detainees who are from Selangor. Possibly the case of YB Manoharan is one of the strong reasons for this move. Will the other states follow suit?
Also heard that Bar Council also had started a fund for the family of detained lawyer (4 of the Hindraf leaders).
The Selangor government will provide financial and welfare assistance to families of those held under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows detention without trial.
Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim said these measures would be taken up by the state government to help the wives and children of these detainees to ease their burden during the difficult period. He added that his government will look into bearing the travelling costs for families to visit the detention camp every week. At the same time, he said that children of the detainees may apply for state government scholarships to further their studies. The wives too will be encouraged to look into various ways to become involved in businesses to help them earn a living, he said. “Life can be difficult for them but they must continue to fight,” he said after receiving a memorandum from the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI) today.DAP state assemblyperson M Manoharan is one of about 70 ISA detainees being held presently at the Kamunting detention centre.
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has pledged to help the families of Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees by providing welfare assistance. Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said several steps could be taken to help the wives and children of these detainees, to help them through difficult times. The state government could bear the travelling costs for families to visit the detention camp every week, he said. The children could get scholarships to further their studies, and ways can be found for the wives to become entrepreneurs. “Life can be difficult for them but they must continue to fight,” he said after receiving a memorandum from Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI or Abolish ISA Movement) here on Monday.
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government will provide scholarships to the children of 16 people from the state who have been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA). It will also provide business opportunities to their wives. Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the state government would cover the cost of travel for families visiting those under detention.
300 million not for MIC
May 27th, 2008After letters condemning MIC’s 300 million claim appears in papers (not to mention in kedai kopi and blogs too), Samy clarifies that the money WILL not pass through MIC, not even a single sen! Hmm…it would have been a non-issue if this clarified earlier. Perhaps they thought they can get away with it, but brader…this is 2008, not 1980s! Let’s hope for good news from PM in July.
Anyway, doing the maths reveals that:
100 mil -investment fund
50 mil – SME/SMI
30 mil – micro-credit
10 mil – agro business
50 mil – new schools
15 mil – pre-school
30 mil – hostel
15 mil – single mothers / poor families
total: RM300 million.
cream of crop?
May 26th, 2008PSD claims cream of the crop were selected for PSD scholarship, but if you read the “Letters” page of the Star recently, it seems to show otherwise. I hope its not a case of shooting oneself in the foot here.
We can’t hide things in the current age. Today, news spreads in seconds. Lies can be uncovered easily. Two of the letters are available on the Star’s website while the other one is in the print edition only.
Letter 1 (source):
PSD should release details of scholarship recipients
I REFER to “Not for all top students,” (The Star, May 18) quoting the PSD Director-General saying that those who were awarded the PSD scholarship are the “cream of the crop”.
I am a 11A student and I was the top student of my school. I was denied the PSD scholarship. However, some of my friends who had fewer As were awarded seats for matriculation and PSD scholarships and they do not know which to choose.
They are my very close friends and they are shy to face me purely because I am the top student and I was not offered anything. They too feel sad for me.
As such I would like the PSD to be transparent and genuine in making such statements. I am sure many in my shoes would have encountered the same situation. » Read more: cream of crop?
