Proof that Indians can’t be united at the top, I guess. MIC, MIC Baru, IPF, MIUP, and now IPF Bersatu. It’s not enough for those on top to ask the community to be ‘united” all the time. I think its time for the people to voice their dissatisfaction and anger to these so called champions of the community.

Split in IPF, rival party emerges

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indian Progressive Front (IPF), the non-Barisan Nasional party that has been loyal to the ruling coalition for the past decade, is now split.

One faction is led by ailing president Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan and the other by former secretary-general K. Panjamurti.

Panjamurti, who is the president of the newly-formed IPF Bersatu, said voters need not worry as their support would always be for the BN.  We have our own identity as IPF Bersatu and under my leadership, we have state, division and branch leaders. The supporters behind me will campaign for BN. We are going around the country in favour of the government.”

On the split, Panjamurti said it was inevitable as some party members and veterans were unhappy with Pandithan’s leadership and had also complained of mismanagement of party funds.

The last straw came with talks of dissolving the IPF and the possibility of a merger with the Malaysian Indian Cong-ress (MIC) last year.

He added that IPF Bersatu was not registered as he feared getting into a legal battle could spoil votes for BN. He said his faction would campaign for BN with former MIC deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam and People’s Progressive Party president Datuk M. Kayveas.

IPF deputy president V. Senggutuan, however, brushed aside Panjamurti’s allegations.  Who are they? They are nobody to us. All the state, division and branch leaders are with us. We don’t recognise IPF Bersatu,” he said. He added that IPF had been having meetings with Indian voters in Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Perak.

In response to the recent patch-up between Pandithan and MIC chief Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, Senggutuan said it was just a misunderstanding and not a generation-old feud. The “misunderstanding”arose in 1988 when Pandithan was sacked for holding a hunger strike in front of the MIC headquarters.

It seemed that there were far more protestors than the supporters who attended the MIC Youth's talk/meeting.

'Opposition 'using Hindraf 'for own ends'

KULIM: Opposition parties are using Hindu Action Rights Force (Hindraf) supporters for their own political agenda, says MIC Youth.

MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran said the Opposition, especially Parti Keadilan Rakyat, had never championed the cause of the Indians in the country and were using Hindraf supporters to garner support for the next election.

"It is only recently after the Hindraf issue that they started speaking for the Indians. It is all a ploy to fish for votes," he said.

"Indians must be very careful of their ulterior motives," he told reporters after meeting IPF Youth leaders and members from Baling, Kulim and Padang Serai here on Sunday night. Also present was IPF Youth chief R. Ravishankar.

MIC and IPF Youth wings have recently joined hands to look into the problems of Indians in the country.

Vigneswaran said the Indians must realise that it was only by consultation and negotiation that their grievances and problems could be solved effectively.

"We are aware that there are many Indians who are unhappy over various things. But letting themselves to be used by the Opposition is not the right way to achieve their goals," he said.

Earlier, more than 100 Hindraf supporters gathered with placards and banners along the road leading to the IPF meeting hall in Paya Besar here, shouting at Vigneswaran and his entourage when he arrived for the meeting.

Kulim acting OCPD Deputy Supt Ghuzlan Saleh said more than 30 personnel members in four trucks from the Public Order Riot Unit were deployed there to be on standby, adding that a man in his late 20s was detained and released later for being unruly.

He said the crowd dispersed at about 11.30pm

Pandithan to rally support for Barisan in the general election
By : Jennifer Gomez

KUALA LUMPUR:

Indian Progressive Front (IPF) president Tan Sri M.G Pandithan will go from state to state to rally support for the Barisan Nasional in preparation for the general election.

He announced this at the party’s central working committee meeting yesterday attended by more than 50 members.

Looking frail and speaking slowly, Pandithan said he was confident of reaching out to the grassroots and exposing the bad intentions of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).

“Most of our over 380,000 members belong to the grassroots and are in the lower income group. And from the feedback I get from our leaders, none of our members are aligned with Hindraf. We want to tell them not to fall for the opposition's tactics and to give BN their 100 per cent backing,” he added.

Pandithan said he would concentrate on certain constituencies where some youths had been taken up by Hindraf’s propoganda.
“What we saw at the recent rally was a handful of young people. Let’s not forget the silent majority that do not condone such acts,” he said.

He urged Indians to detest Hindraf for injecting religion into its cause just as Pas was disliked for its extremist ways.

“Religion should not be used for political or commercial gain. Hindraf will cease to exist after the elections,” he added.

Asked if he felt that all the problems plaguing the Indian community has been addressed, Pandithan said, “Problems will always be there, but let me ask you, has the problems of the Malays and the Chinese in this country been solved?

We must be practical, these things take time to be sorted out. But if every community wants to be a fanatical force, then the country would go to the dogs.”

Youth wings to tackle community’s woes

source

KUALA LUMPUR: The youth wings of the MIC, People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Indian Progressive Front (IPF) sat down together for the first time yesterday to discuss and join hands in tackling problems faced by the Indian community.

At the meeting chaired by MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran, they decided to form committees at division, state and national level to address the issues of temples, Tamil schools and job opportunities in the civil service.

“Any problem which cannot be resolved will be brought to the attention of MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to bring it to the Cabinet,” he said after the two-hour meeting.

PPP youth chief T. Murugiah and IPF youth chief R. Ravishankar were also present.

“The opposition parties are saying that we have not done anything but who is responsible for the benefits enjoyed by the community for the past 50 years?

“It is MIC with the support of PPP and the IPF who had fought and obtained land for temples and Tamil schools,” he said.

Vigneswaran said opposition parties like the DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat were using these issues to woo Indian votes.

“The issue is not really who cares or does good for the community. I believe the Indians will not be hoodwinked by such tactics.”

Nalla forms new party to ‘help uplift lot of Indians’

source

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan, who left Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) a dejected man, has formed a new political party for the Indian community. Known as the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP), the party aims to uplift the Indian community especially at the grassroots level by providing better living and health standards, helping youngsters and fighting corruption, he said. Nalla, as he is popularly known, quit PKR on May 25 this year following a rift with de facto leader and then best friend Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was also his former tennis partner. He left after being asked to withdraw from the race for the PKR vice-presidency despite having a high number of nominations.

“I joined PKR in August last year hoping to serve for the betterment of the Indian community but realised it was not the right platform. “The party had limited or no interest at all in helping the Indian community,” he said yesterday during a press conference to announced the new party. Nalla said he had travelled across the country over the past few months and decided to set up the party following advice and suggestions from friends, supporters and the grassroots. “We feel there is room for another Indian-based party and the MIUP can fill that vacuum with great success,” said Nalla, who was MIC deputy youth leader in the 1980s. MIUP, he said, became a registered party on Sept 14 and would be launched next month when the party line-up and manifesto would be announced.

The MIUP president said it had more than 100 registered members and was confident of recruiting 20,000 more over the next four months. Nalla said the party is independent but was open to discussions with Barisan Nasional or the opposition. Nalla said he was not forming the party because of the next general election. “I will contest only if my supporters want me to,” he said. Also present was former PKR youth chief Ezam Mohd Nor, who said he had turned up to support his long-time friend. “As the Gerak chairman, we are open to any party that fights corruption and we are confident this party will do just that,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Parti Keadilan Rakyat Kepong division chairman Datuk S. Nallakaruppan announced the formation of a new party — the Malaysian Indian United Party (MUIP) — yesterday.

The 61-year-old businessman named himself MIUP president and said he hoped to sign up 20,000 members within three months. The party was registered on Sept 14. Nalla said when the party is officially launched at the Putra World Trade Centre next month, it would have about 5,000 pioneer members.  “My aim is simple. I want to help and upgrade the Indian community in general,” he said at his Taman Duta home. Nalla said he was willing to work with any political party, be it from Barisan Nasional or the opposition.

“We feel there is room for another Indian-based party in our political sphere and believe MIUP can fill that vacuum with great success.” Asked if he was planning to stand for the forthcoming general election, Nalla said he was considering it. Nalla was at one time a close associate of Keadilan adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He failed to be nominated for the Ijok by-election in April and was instructed by Anwar to withdraw from the contest for the party’s vice-presidency despite obtaining the second highest number of nominations. On May 25, Nalla quit Keadilan along with eight others, claiming Indians were given less opportunity in the party and that promises made to him had not been honoured. Nalla was invited by Anwar to join Keadilan in August last year.
