Ibrahim Ali says give no aid for Chinese

I’m not sure what he had consumed recently, but this statement should be seeing him under ISA or at least charged for some sort of crime. But knowing Bolehland, he and some other monkeys get to say whatever they like. It will be considered as “voicing their displeasure” or some other nonsense according to the twisted logic of some politicians.  Just imagine other groups doing the same, and you can see the swift attack.

Well, this is what the trouble-maker said according to Malaysian Insider:

BN meletakkan sasaran majoriti 6,000 undi.

In English, it means something like this:

Malay rights group Perkasa wants the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to review election pledges made in Chinese areas in Hulu Selangor because of the community’s poor support for the coalition.

Its president Datuk Ibrahim Ali (picture)said despite BN’s success in winning the semi-rural seat from PKR, the Chinese voters had largely chosen to back the federal opposition.

“It is necessary for the government to delay any allocation and approval of projects for the Chinese community,” said Ibrahim in a statement responding to the by-election result.

Ibrahim added that the government should also ignore all the demands made by BN members, MCA and Gerakan, as the Chinese of Hulu Selangor had rejected the ruling coalition.

They show no appreciation to BN government’s efforts, even though the BN government had to hurt the feelings of the Malays and the natives,” said Ibrahim.

All their demands are fulfilled by the government but they do not know how to be grateful,” he added.

Ibrahim, an independent MP, had actively campaigned for BN during the campaign.

His Perkasa is fighting for affirmative action policies favouring Malays to be retained permanently.

In the by-election which saw BN’s P. Kamalanathan defeating former Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim by 1,725 votes, the ruling coalition lost badly in Chinese dominated polling districts.

During the final campaigning days for the Hulu Selangor by-election Datuk Seri Najib Razak promised an allocation of RM3 million for a Chinese school near in new village.

The BN chairman also promised RM90,000 for the Ulu Yam Kwang Tung cemetery and more allocations for Hokkien and muhibbah associations in the area.

However the support level from the Chinese voters was reduced from about 35 per cent in Election 2008 to less than 30 per cent yesterday.

BN’s victory was guaranteed by strong support from the Malay-dominated Felda settlements and villagers in rural Hulu Selangor.

Ibrahim said the outcome showed that the pro-Malay affirmative action policies should be maintained.

“BN must now keep the Malay happy as they have been loyal to BN. Therefore the affirmative action policies to strengthen the Malays and the natives must be maintained and implemented thoroughly,” he said.

This is what the useless paper mentions:

Dalam pada itu Ibrahim berkata, pilihan raya kali ini juga memperlihatkan penolakan kaum Cina terhadap kerajaan.

‘‘Walaupun kerajaan telah memberi layanan kepada mereka, balasan yang diterima masih tidak seberapa.

‘‘Mereka masih belum berterima kasih kepada kerajaan BN dan ini jelas membuktikan bahawa pengaruh MCA dan Gerakan terus ditolak oleh masyarakat Cina,” katanya.

See??? Nothing at all about the issue of recalling back the aid. Another confirmation of the paper that is not even worth to be used in toilets.

What will newly elected YB Kamalanathan say about his buddy Ibrahim now since this affects his constituency directly? cannot say “no comments” or “i’ll answer later” any more” 🙂

At least this time, MCA did say something in reply:

He explained, “when you try to buy them at the last minute, telling them to vote for BN and they will get rewarded, some of them feel insulted.

It is like treating them like beggars. The Chinese will be your long term friend if you be fair and treat them well. But, they will turn away from you if not.

“It is not that they don’t like Najib, they adore Najib, but they do not support these few BN leaders who are ‘extremists’ like Ibrahim Ali.”

Sadly, he said, some of the BN leadership are emulating Ibrahim’s racist stance.

There are those who keep saying that Malays are first and the Chinese should be grateful,” he added. This is not the way to win the Chinese over,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Dong Jiao Zhong committee member Chow Siew Hon stressed that the money used for the allocations belongs to the government and not to any political party.

“The money ultimately belongs to the rakyat. We are all entitled to it. Nobody can say that you cannot get the funds just because you don’t support BN.

“The vote is your personal choice, whoever you want to support. I strongly disagree with that gentleman (Ibrahim),” said Chow.

MCA state assemblyperson for Kuala Kubu Baru Wong Koon Mun refused to comment on the issue of allocations but hit out at Ibrahim, saying that he is a “rotten apple” and a “party to the effort to topple BN.”

BN Secretary General’s response:

Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said today that the government will not neglect the Chinese voters in Hulu Selangor.

“We cannot take back the allocations for the Chinese. There are also Chinese who voted for BN in the by-election,” he explained when asked if the government would heed the suggestion of Perkasa chairman Ibrahim Ali.

The independent MP had suggested that the Chinese voters in Hulu Selangor should be punished by the government for not fully supporting MIC candidate P Kamalananthan.

Tengku (left) added that as BN is a multiracial party, they need to help the rakyat irrespective of their race or religion.

He then brought up Kelantan which is ruled by PAS.

“We give Kelantan a lot of money for its development even though BN is not the state government.”

Nevertheless, the Putrajaya MP said that Umno will work closely with MCA to understand why the Chinese voters are not supportive of BN and how they can overcome this problem.

“I believe that if we conduct a post mortem (on the Hulu Selangor by-election) we can get answers on how to regain the Chinese votes,” he told reporters in a press conference at the Umno headquarters.

He added that it is important for all the component parties to work together towards finding the root cause and not penalise MCA.

“We cannot punish a member of our component party if they don’t perform. What we can do now is to analyse what happened and what can be done to improve things,” he continued.

I like to quote Wong Chun Wai’s tweet:

Ibrahim Ali wants govt to ignore demands by MCA n Gerakan. Maybe he shd find out who r the largest tax payers in Msia.

PSD scholarship results

Last year, only 72 Indian students (it was 34 initially) were selected. with nearly 190 others appealing via MIC (187 students, three had scored 12 A1s, seven (11 A1s), 68 (10 A1s), 66 (9 A1s) and 43 (8A1s) in the 2007 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Do we remember Kamine Devi who scored 10A1s?

PSD said 13A1 was the cutoff for the overseas scholarships. Last year 15,217 applications were received, out of which 7,253 were called for interview.

900 places went to normal students while 1100 taken by privileged community.

This year, my blog registered comments from few students who got rejected.

MCA and Gerakan has started the ball rolling:

MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong has lambasted the Public Service Department (PSD) on the awarding of overseas scholarships for top scorers, Sin Chew Daily and China Press reported.

Dr Wee, who is also the Deputy Education Minister, said the MCA Youth has requested MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and three other MCA ministers to bring the matter to the Cabinet today.

This was to ascertain the procedure and criteria of awarding scholarships to students to study overseas, Dr Wee said after receiving complaints from two students, one with 14 1As and the other 13 1As, that they did not get overseas scholarships but were offered local matriculation courses instead.

Dr Wee said their friends who scored 9 1As were offered scholarships to study overseas.

He urged the PSD to be clear in its guidelines on awarding overseas scholarships.

Gerakan Youth secretary-general Dr Dominic Lau, commenting on five top scorers from Malacca who were denied overseas scholarships, also told Sin Chew that the wing was willing to offer help to students who were rejected by the PSD.

He also said the PSD should consider reviewing students who were turned down to give them a chance to pursue their studies overseas.

Even if they were rejected, an explanation should be given to them, said Dr Lau.

SMJK Sam Tet principal Phang Yoon Ming was also quoted by Sin Chew as saying that it seems to be more difficult to secure overseas scholarships from the PSD this year.

Phang said about 10 students had approached him to sign appeal letters.

At least some of them got places in matriculation!

So, what would it be this year? How many get and how many didn’t? This year also no transparency. No list for public to check on those who received – whether really chosen according to the criteria or not. With minimum cut off of 13A1s, it will be a heartache for those who scored between 8 and 12As as they have no choice but to do STPM, if not selected for local IPTA foundation or matriculation programmes. Those from well to do families can opt for private education. How about others? Can imagine 8As student doing diploma in politechnic (no offense but it shows the level of competition nowadays)? Those days, 4 or 5As were meaningful. Now 8As is common like pisang goreng stall along roadside.

So, while I wait for MIC’s report on Indian students, time to go find something to eat…hungry!!!

Who is documenting our historical facts?

The news below caught my eye and made me think. I remember reading that in US, even the small towns and villages have a local library/newspaper office setup that records the events properly. Thus its not surprising to find information (events, personality) about these places for the last 200 – 300 years documented and well preserved. Unfortunately, we Malaysians don’t seem to have that kind of thinking. Probably we don’t see the importance or relevance of it, or its just not a priority thing to do.

Our history books also distorted towards one community, so we can’t have much faith in that.

So, while the MCA is making efforts to document the achievement of its community forefathers in the country (possibly to safeguard from attempts to downplay or even deny the community’s contributions by certain quarters), what are we doing? Any institutes or groups doing such work? Who has the resources to spearhead such venture? EWRF? MIC?

MCA has proposed to name a new school after Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy to commemorate one of the founding fathers of Kuala Lumpur.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the school would be built in the Klang Valley.

He said it is among the 20 Chinese primary schools to be built in the country.

“I will announce its location and details later,” he told reporters after commemorating the 124th death anniversary of Yap at Kwong Tong Cemetery here yesterday.

Ong said Yap, who developed this city into a commercial and mining centre, had contributed greatly but his legacy seemed to have been overlooked.

“Only a small road in the city centre has been named after him,’’ he said.

In view of this, Ong said the party’s Chinese Community History Consultative Bureau, headed by Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung, had been directed to document Yap’s contributions.

“His efforts should not be confined to a particular race or clan but all Malaysians,’’ he said.

Ong said similar research and recognition would also be done on other significant Chinese personalities in local history.

He said MCA would ensure that historical facts involving the Chinese community were properly documented so that they would not be forgotten.

SJKC Sin Ming invites opposition to function

Some time ago, when the Selangor government announced ceremony to award RM4 million to Tamil schools in Selangor, quite a number of schools stayed away because they were verbally warned by Education department. I didn’t see any comments from MIC to protest against the warning. True, the state government could have been more discreet and avoided the controversy, but I guess they wanted to milk as much publicity and good name as possible.

Today, SJKC Sin Ming, which is quite near my house, invited Selangor MB Khalid to officiate the new four-storey building. Worse still, they also invited Anwar Ibrahim as guest of honor! Others invited included Kuala Langat MP Abdullah Sani Hamid, Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and three Selangor exco members – Teresa Kok, Ronnie Liu and Yaakob Sapari. One can only imagine the anger in Education Department 🙂

Malaysiakini reports that, in response, the education authorities have barred the school’s headmaster and teachers from the event, according to board chairperson Chai Yoon Peng.

The chairperson also said that invitations were sent to key federal and state reps from Umno, MCA and Gerakan.

“No one should view education issues through a political lens,” said Chai, adding that the school board would invite anyone who is willing to assist the school.

The chairperson was worried that a pledge of RM120k by Education Ministry through the deputy minister Wee Ka Siong may be retracted.

“He (Wee) said he has approved the funds, but we must wait until the Feb 22 (today) and see what other issues we have. Then, we must ask (Sungai Pelek assemblyperson) Yap Ee Wah (from MCA) to call him,” said Chai.

Inviting the MB was not in vain. He announced a donation of of RM50,000 to its coffers, courtesy of the Selangor state government, and also announced that the state government would assist the school in adjacent vacant land for expansion purposes.

At a press conference later, Anwar responded to the possibility that the Education Ministry may withhold funding for the school.

“That would not be very smart. This is about education and the rights of all schools. This (the money) is not coming from the education minister’s pockets. If it was, he can hold it. We’re talking about taxpayers money and funds which have been promised.

“I think it is absurd and irresponsible on the part of the deputy (education) minister to threaten schools in this manner and treat Chinese schools as part of the MCA outfit… don’t condemn children just because you have lost support of the Chinese community,” he said.

Response from Wee:

Deputy Education Minister Wee denied that his ministry had exerted pressure on teachers not to attend today’s event. He told Malaysiakini that he did not hold back on the RM120,000 funding to Sin Ming school. According to him, the final approval of the funding will be made next month.

I think MCA won’t dare to do anything as stupid as that. It will be the death knell for the party if it is seen potentially harming chinese schools. Anyway, I think the school was trying to pre-empt any backlash from politicians at federal level by given ample publicity to the pledge by Education Ministry. As it is, the episode in SJKC Damansara (relocated to Tropicana)  is still a bitter pill to swallow even though the school has been reopened this year. They won’t want to have another potential bomb on their hands.

I wonder if this happened to Tamil schools, what would the response be from community political leaders.
