KUALA LUMPUR: A pregnant mother forced to live in a storeroom with her five children can look forward to better days.

The Welfare Department has approved RM450 a month aid to S. Punitha for her children’s food and schooling. And City Hall has promised the family a flat in two weeks.

A newspaper reported that the eight-month-pregnant mother and her children became homeless after her husband abandoned the family.

Punitha went to work as a cleaner, earning about RM600 a month. However, with her advancing pregnancy, she said it is getting more difficult to work.

The residents of Block A of the Pekan Batu low-cost flats in Jalan Ipoh allowed the 31-year-old and her children to move into the storeroom.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, accompanied by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk S.K. Devamany and Welfare and City Hall officials yesterday presented Punitha with foodstuff and other household supplies.

She also received RM1,000 from the National Welfare Foundation.

Punitha plans to give up her unborn child for adoption.

Her 9-year-old daughter, Malathi, does not have a birth certificate because Punitha’s husband “never got around to registering her birth”.

The older children — Kavitha Katharayan, 13, Mohandass, 11, and Malathi — have not attended school for the past two years. Dineshkumar, 5, and Sugumaran, 2 are the other children.

Devamany said MIC has adopted Punitha’s family and would work with the Welfare Department on getting the children back in school.

A promising work by MIC. Hope all that was promised is delivered to the family.

Malaysians protest at Indian High Commission

Indians from various background united on Friday to voice their protest againsts India’s non-committal stance over the war in Sri Lanka. Malaysian Nanban was quoted saying 5 groups co-organised the protest by 2000 over people. The photos in the back page showed MIC Youth and Dravidar Kalagam. Malaysiakini reported GPI, Suaram and Tamil Foundation. I saw photos of T Mohan (MIC Youth), DR P. Ramasamy, Manikavasagam and Gobind Singh (however, no mention of DAP or PKR names) in the protest.

About 2,000 people staged a peaceful protest rally yesterday outside the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur calling for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
They also demanded that New Delhi intervened on behalf of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

srilanka_protest_kl_1_06022009Led by the Global Peace Initiative (GPI) movement, the protest lasted over two hours with representatives from non-governmental organisations as well as prominent politicians taking part.

The rally was fuelled by the ongoing onslaught by the Sri Lankan government against the separatist movement, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which has been in dispute with the government over the establishment of an independent Tamil state in that island.

Protesters assembled along the pavements along Jalan Duta opposite the high commission and carried various placards with slogans such as ‘Stop genocide of Tamils’ and ‘Stop the killings’.

Under strict police observation, the protesters called for the Indian government to stop the “genocide attack on the Sri Lankan Tamils”.

srilanka_protest_kl_2_06022009The police who were initially trying to disperse the crowd from the gates of the high commission finally gave in around 1pm and allowed a small delegation of nine people to enter and submit the memorandum.

The delegation was lead by S Pasupathi (GPI president), K Arumugam (Suaram chairperson) and CM Elantamil (deputy director of the Tamil Foundation) as well as Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy, members of Parliament Gobind Singh Deo (Puchong), S Manikavasagam (Kapar) and M Monagaran (Teluk Intan).

“We are constrained to state that we have been shocked at the total inhuman onslaught on the civilians of the Tamil home land by the Sri Lanka armed forces, killing and maiming men, women and children in thousands.

“Of all countries in the world, India, the home of Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha, King Asoka and in our time Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, has been working hand in glove with the racist Sri Lankan government to destroy the Tamil homeland,” said the memorandum which was submitted by GPI.

The four page memorandum also listed measures for the Indian government to take in order to halt the crisis in Sri Lanka, with orders of ceasefire and negotiations between the LTTE and Sri Lanka government topping the list.

Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Ashok K Kantha who received the memorandum assured the gathering that he would submit the memorandum to Indian government in New Delhi.

Now only want to have second cabinet committee meeting?

Guess what, the first meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Indian community development was held back in July last year. After that it was supposed to held in September. Strangely, there was no news about the committee meeting anywhere. And now, Star reports Samy Vellu as saying that the second meeting will be held in 23rd February. Let’s see the article:

Issues affecting the Indian community, including equity participation, are likely [LIKELY??? Then what the point of having the committee???] to be discussed at the second meeting of the Cabinet Committee for the Development of Indians on Feb 23, said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

He said the committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, would discuss the MIC’s proposals, including the setting-up of a mechanism to increase Indians’ equity participation from the current 1.2% to 3% in 2020.

… The MIC had suggested that a mechanism be established within the government-owned Permodalan Nasional Bhd to assist poor Indians to buy shares through 50% grants and 50% loans from the Government [So, will be it finalised in the 2nd meeting or pushed to next meeting?].

Samy Vellu said several decisions were taken at the first Cabinet Committee meeting last July 1 including streamlining the procedure for bringing in Hindu, Sikh and other priests from India [which took how long implemented?], agreeing to a policy of converting all partially-aided Tamil schools to fully-aided schools [note the words – “agreeing” to a “policy”] and increasing the number of Public Service Department scholarships for Indians studying in foreign universities to 163 students [its well documented that this happened before the meeting after MIC leader went to plead with the PSD].

Other decisions include enabling those who scored 9As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination to receive scholarships to study in local universities [this is for all students, not Indians only – says MCA!], recognising the MIC-run Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University as among the institutes where scholarship students could enrol and agreeing to set up a special task force under the Home Ministry to deal with the 30,000 Indians born in Malaysia who are still without documents [hopefully the task force will present how many cases it has solved and the problems faced].

He said the Government had also approved RM80mil over the last 18 months to redevelop 50 Tamil schools which were in a dilapidated state.

And if you noticed, Samy said the RM80 millions for schools were to “REDEVELOP” Tamil schools. Can he specify how much of the funds is for “repair” works and how much is for constructing “new” buildings? There’s a big difference between the words being used. For example, in SJKT Vallambrosa, the money given was for “repairs” and not for adding new buildings. So, how to solve the problem of overcrowding in the school?

Who is MIC Youth supporting for presidency?

Rarely do we see MIC Youth (or any other wing) offering advice to the President, at least publicly. So, it came as a surprise when acting coordinator of MIC Youth made the following comments (Malaysiakini) :

MIC president S Samy Vellu must not only choose the right time to relinquish his post but also pick the right candidate to succeed him.

MCPX

In making this call, MIC Youth chief T Mohan said the issue of seniority should not arise when choosing a successor in order to ensure that the candidate is a person who would be able to push the party forward.

“Just because a leader has been there for a long time, it doesn’t mean that he should be handed the top post on a silver platter. MIC Youth does not believe in this practice.

“The successor should be a person who is young and vibrant,” he was quoted as saying by Tamil daily Malaysia Nanban yesterday.

However, Mohan did not mention if the Youth wing had any particular leader in mind whom it considers as the best replacement for Samy Vellu who has been at the helm for three decades.

Its interesting to note that the advisor for MIC Youth is none other than Vel Paari, Samy Vellu’s son – who is presumably  “young and vibrant”.

Current VP is Palanivel. Its expected that Dr S. Subramaniam will challenge Palanivel. Other potential candidates include Sothinathan and Dato Subra. Veterans will be Palanivel and Dato Subra. Relatively young is Dr S Subra and Sothinathan. Younger still will be Devamany and Saravanan, the two deputy ministers.

Of course, if Muthupalaniappan succeeds, all this will be meaningless!

I guess the wheels are in motion already, because its says “website under construction” today!

Let’s see what are the new things MIC Portal is going to have:

MIC president S Samy Vellu said Indian Malaysians can soon become members of the party through online registration, a move he expect would bolster the party’s strength and unite Indians under one political party in the Barisan Nasional.

MCPX

The MIC is the latest among several BN component parties which have started online membership registration. Umno launched its online membership portal last week.

Samy Vellu said he was confident that the move which was in line with the party’s ‘Unity Plan for the Indian Malaysians’, could increase MIC membership to at least 50,000 people initially.

MIC currently has about 630,000 members with almost 5,000 branches.

… “Once the MIC portal is launched soon, we will embark on a massive online membership registration,” he said in a statement.

Samy Vellu said the MIC was targetting professionals and those who failed to become members through existing branches for various reasons.

“The MIC headquarters will admit them as members directly into the party without having to go through the branches which some feel is cumbersome,” he said.

He said the first phase of the MIC portal would include an eBlog, eForum, eComplaint, polls, latest news and announcements as well as information on all MIC subsidiaries, the MIED and the Social Strategic Foundation.

“The second phase will include Tele-Centre, a project that allows Indians to get jobs and work professionally from their home and also an Online Extensive Survey form accessible by every branch officer which allows them to get in-depth information about the Indians staying under their jurisdiction,” he added.

Wow! That’s quite a handful. Unfortunately, there’s no mention of any dates when all these will be available. And perhaps someone can inform those in charge to drop the “e” from “eBlog” – its kind of redundant, if you know what I mean.
