Earlier, Nalla condemned Anwar. Now, PKR man Gobalakrishnan comes out with some truths on Nalla himself. How long will this drama last? Yaare vaithu yaaru komedi pannarange? (who is making a joke of who?)

'Hypocritical' Nalla rapped for changing tune

The anti-Anwar Ibrahim tirade unleashed in recent weeks by MIC President S Samy Vellu, joined by the chief of the new formed Malaysian Indian United Party, KS Nallakaruppan, has drawn a scathing response from PKR supreme council member N Gobalakrishnan.

Gobalakrishnan, a staunch canvasser of Indian support for PKR, said Nallakaruppan’s latest salvo against the former deputy prime minister in today’s editions of Tamil Nesan and Makkal Osai was particularly hard to take because of what the MIUP leader has said in public and in private about Anwar in the past.

Among other criticisms, Nallakaruppan was reported by the two Tamil dailies as lambasting Anwar for hoodwinking the Indians by presently showing sympathy for their plight when he had nothing to display as proof of that empathy while he was the powerful finance minister and deputy prime minister from when he was in the government.

In remarks to Malaysiakini, Gobalakrishnan said he found this broadside by Nallakaruppan particularly galling because of what the latter had told him after one budget presentation in the 1990s by the then Finance Minister Anwar that exempted temple products from tax.

“He told me that Anwar had called him before tabling the budget to talk about the tax exemption. Nallakaruppan said that Anwar would call him before presenting the budget to parliament to chat with him about aspects of the budget that would help the Indian community,” said Gobalakrishnan.

In all, Anwar tabled eight budgets in Parliament between 1990 and 1997. He was sacked from the cabinet and Umno in September 1998, two months before what would have been his ninth budget.

Gobalakrishnan further disclosed that in 2004, he and Nallakaruppan met up in Munich while both were visiting Anwar who was in the Bavarian capital for surgery by a renowned orthopedic surgeon for a back problem.

“I remember what Nallakaruppan told me in Munich – that he believed Anwar would be the saviour of the Indian community in Malaysia,” recalled Gobalakrishnan.

“That is the same thing Nallakaruppan reiterated at the function PKR held at the Hotel Istana in Kuala Lumpur to welcome him into the party when he joined us in the later part of 2006. He told the gathering that he would get one hundred thousand Indians to join PKR. In the event, he barely garnered two thousand,” said Gobalakrishnan.

Anwar sympathetic to all

As preamble, Gobalakrishnan, 48, said he had known Nallakaruppan since “our childhood days in Sitiawan in the 1960s.”

“Nalla was my senior in the youth wing of MIC,” said Gopalakrishnan who between 1985 and 1999 was secretary general of MIC Youth. Gopalakrishnan joined PKR in April 1999 when the party was formed.

“There was a rift between Nallakaruppan and Samy Vellu in 1987 over a corporate matter,” continued Gopalakrishnan.

“After that, Nallakaruppan was afraid for his safety and drew even closer to Anwar whom he has known for thirty years. For him to say what he has been saying about Anwar in recent weeks is hypocritical and shows his lack of integrity,” said Gopalakrishnan.

“Just because Anwar did not support Nalla’s aspirations for a vice presidential slot in the PKR hierarchy does not mean he should forget all what has transpired between him and Anwar and all what he has said and felt about Anwar in the past,” he added.

Nallakaruppan attempted last May to contest for a veep’s positon in PKR elections but withdrew when Anwar demurred. He left the party in a huff, muttering recriminations against Anwar and went on to form MIUP.

Gobalakrishnan asserted: “Anwar is not being hypocritical in the matter of his sympathy for Indians. As a matter of fact he is sympathetic to all, irrespective of race, who are poor and in need of state help to alleviate their plight.”

Based on my close association with him for more than 30 years, I know very well that he is lying to the Indian community now, just to gain votes.

Nalla stick around Anwar for 30 YEARS knowing very well about the guy? Why not come out in the open earlier? Looks like cannot trust Nalla as well. sticking around with a crook, means you are most likely one as well, especially if for as long as 30 years.

Nalla to Anwar: 'What've you done for Indians?'

PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim today came under fire from former ally turned nemesis KS Nallakarupan over his comments regarding the Indian community.

Nallakarupan, who helms the fledgling Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP), challenged Anwar to reveal what he did for the Indian community when he was deputy premier and finance minister.

Nallakarupan was responding to Anwar’s remarks during his recent roadshows in Kedah and Penang.

“He is telling them (the Indian community) to stop voting for Barisan Nasional candidates and instead cast their votes for his party in the coming elections.

“I find it strange that Anwar is going around making claims that the government has done nothing for the Indian community

“Even stranger is his claim that his party will ensure the Indian community is not marginalised if he comes to power,” he said in a statement.

'Putting up a show'

In issuing his challenge to Anwar, Nallakarupan claimed that the opposition leader is lying to fish for votes.

“I have personal experience and knowledge on how he treats the Indian community. Based on my close association with him for more than 30 years, I know very well that he is lying to the Indian community now, just to gain votes.

“I hope he will put an immediate stop to his political games in trying to cheat the Indian community,” he said.

Nallakarupan also advised the Indian community not to be taken up by Anwar’s claims.

“I hope they will realise that Anwar who did nothing for them when he could have done something for them is not going to do anything now,” he said.

Recently, Anwar was also attacked over the same issue by MIC president S Samy Vellu who accused the former of putting up a show.

“He is lovely because the general election is just around the corner. He seems to be putting up a very good show and smiling a lot these days when he sees the Indians.

“I don’t know when he started to develop such good habits whereas his old habits were totally different when he was deputy prime minister and finance minister.

“When he was on top, he never looked at the Indians, let alone resolve their problems,” said Samy Vellu.

Newly formed Indian-based party, the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP), today vowed to support the Barisan Nasional-led government, believing that by doing so, opportunity to elevate the social status of the Indian community would be better.

Party president KS Nallakarupan told his supporters at the party’s launching ceremony held at the Istana Hotel in Kuala Lumpur today that the fledgling MIUP does not want to go against BN policies.

“We believe that the party’s aim can still be achieved by working closely with the BN government,

“We as a party can inject a fresh approach to solving the problems of the Indian community,” he told 800 of his supporters.

The former PKR leader also said that the presence of MIUP, will be a “breath of fresh air which is much needed to make quick changes for the betterment of the Indian community.”

Nallakaruppan was also quick to stress that there was no intention of discrediting the much-established Indian-based party MIC. “We are also not saying that the present Indian-based party in the Barisan Nasional is not doing its job to help the community.  “I am sure that that party is doing whatever it can to help the community. But I think we can do better,” he added.

A secondary school

Nallakaruppan said that MIC should continue with their agenda and that the MIUP will also concentrate on its mission though the latter might have different approaches to issues.

“What’s wrong with being another race-based party? You have MCA and Gerakan (both Chinese-based party) and MIC and the Peoples Progressive Front (both Indian-based party) all in BN, why can't MIUP be in BN too?” he argued.

Elaborating on “fresh approaches”, Nallakaruppan said his party have outlined several social programmes as means to tackle the problems of the Indian community.

“We have introduced several programmes like sports, education and many youth-oriented programmes in order to inculcate productivity in the Indian community so they may integrate well with other races in this country,” he said.

He also said that his party would be first launching plans to establish an independent Tamil secondary soon.

When asked if MIUP will contest in the coming general election speculated to be somewhere early next year, Nallakaruppan said his party will not contest. “I want to concentrate on promoting my party only. Even if BN wants to give me seats to contest, I will not take it. I just want my party to be known first,” he said at a press conference held after the party’s launching ceremony.

‘Go through proper channel’

Nallakaruppan also refused to answer questions on the Hindraf rally which took place earlier today, saying that he wants to only focus on the party’s launch. “This is a historical day in the history of the politics of Malaysia and an important day for me and my party. I don’t want to talk about the Hindraf rally.”
He however said that he personally felt that the Indian community should abide by the law and work within the proper channel if they wished to express any grievances.

About 30,000 protesters demonstrated under the shadows of Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Twin Towers today after their efforts to petition the British High Commission was thwarted by the police with tear gas and chemical-laced water cannon.

The planned protest is to support a US$4-trillion (RM14-trillion) lawsuit by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) against Malaysia's former colonial power for bringing Indians to Malaysia as indentured labourers and exploiting them for 150 years.

NST: Five Indian leaders rejoin PKR

KUALA LUMPUR: Five supporters of former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan have decided to abandon him – just 24 hours before he is due to launch his new party, the Malaysian Indians United Party. All five have instead decided to rejoin PKR, the party they left along with Nalakaruppan in May this year.

In a statement, PKR vice-president R. Sivarasah said former Federal Territory deputy chief S. Maniselvan, Rasah division Youth deputy chief R.S. Dinesh, Youth vice-chief K. Vijay, Youth exco member S. Suresh and division member R. Segar had joined the party. Maniselvan said in a statement that he had expected Nallakaruppan to set up a strong opposition party to continue the struggle, while Dinesh said Nallakaruppan's claim that 10,000 PKR members had left the party was untrue. "Only a handful of members left and most of them have decided to return to PKR," he said in the statement.

Nallakaruppan, when contacted, said he was not disappointed with these leaders. "They have no principles in returning to a party which they were disappointed with. They can go as their wish," he said. Nallakaruppan said it was clear that their intention was to discredit the launch of the Malaysian Indians United Party (MIUP) which he founded. He said he only knew Maniselvan and Dinesh and not the others. "They should not be making wild and baseless allegations against me or the party," he said.

In setting up MIUP, Nallakaruppan said the priority of the new party was to address the Indian community problem using fresh ideas and new blood.

Nalla forms new party to ‘help uplift lot of Indians’

source

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan, who left Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) a dejected man, has formed a new political party for the Indian community. Known as the Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP), the party aims to uplift the Indian community especially at the grassroots level by providing better living and health standards, helping youngsters and fighting corruption, he said. Nalla, as he is popularly known, quit PKR on May 25 this year following a rift with de facto leader and then best friend Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was also his former tennis partner. He left after being asked to withdraw from the race for the PKR vice-presidency despite having a high number of nominations.

“I joined PKR in August last year hoping to serve for the betterment of the Indian community but realised it was not the right platform. “The party had limited or no interest at all in helping the Indian community,” he said yesterday during a press conference to announced the new party. Nalla said he had travelled across the country over the past few months and decided to set up the party following advice and suggestions from friends, supporters and the grassroots. “We feel there is room for another Indian-based party and the MIUP can fill that vacuum with great success,” said Nalla, who was MIC deputy youth leader in the 1980s. MIUP, he said, became a registered party on Sept 14 and would be launched next month when the party line-up and manifesto would be announced.

The MIUP president said it had more than 100 registered members and was confident of recruiting 20,000 more over the next four months. Nalla said the party is independent but was open to discussions with Barisan Nasional or the opposition. Nalla said he was not forming the party because of the next general election. “I will contest only if my supporters want me to,” he said. Also present was former PKR youth chief Ezam Mohd Nor, who said he had turned up to support his long-time friend. “As the Gerak chairman, we are open to any party that fights corruption and we are confident this party will do just that,” he added.

Nalla sets up his party

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Parti Keadilan Rakyat Kepong division chairman Datuk S. Nallakaruppan announced the formation of a new party — the Malaysian Indian United Party (MUIP) — yesterday.

The 61-year-old businessman named himself MIUP president and said he hoped to sign up 20,000 members within three months. The party was registered on Sept 14. Nalla said when the party is officially launched at the Putra World Trade Centre next month, it would have about 5,000 pioneer members.  “My aim is simple. I want to help and upgrade the Indian community in general,” he said at his Taman Duta home. Nalla said he was willing to work with any political party, be it from Barisan Nasional or the opposition.

“We feel there is room for another Indian-based party in our political sphere and believe MIUP can fill that vacuum with great success.” Asked if he was planning to stand for the forthcoming general election, Nalla said he was considering it. Nalla was at one time a close associate of Keadilan adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He failed to be nominated for the Ijok by-election in April and was instructed by Anwar to withdraw from the contest for the party’s vice-presidency despite obtaining the second highest number of nominations. On May 25, Nalla quit Keadilan along with eight others, claiming Indians were given less opportunity in the party and that promises made to him had not been honoured. Nalla was invited by Anwar to join Keadilan in August last year.
