Kulasegaran gets councillor post

Two months ago, there were rumours that Kulasegaran will be nominated as Ipoh Mayor, which received mostly negative feedback from the public and other parties/organisations.

He was instead appointed as a councillor, an action that still received flak from certain groups:

Ipoh Ratepayers Association (Irata) vice-president Victor Sankey expressed concern whether Kulasegaran could spare the time from his tight schedule as a parliamentarian to attend to local issues. “No doubt, his credentials qualify him as a councillor but he has enough on his plate as a parliamentarian,” he said Tuesday. Pointing out that local councils were the third tier of government and closest to the people, Victor said ratepayers had high expectations. He added that people were already annoyed that only 30% of the councillors’ posts were allotted to non-governmental organisations.

Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang was also sceptical if Kulasegaran could handle the appointment. He added that the Ipoh Barat MP’s appointment had also set a bad precedent.”A politician should not be given excessive power. Kulasegaran’s appointment is a form of monopoly.  “As there were other candidates applying to become councillors, it should not be monopolised by politicians,” he said.

Perak MCA organising secretary Dr Mah Hang Soon questioned whether Kulasegaran could carry out his duties as a councillor as he would be away in Parliament for more than 100 days a year.  “Being a councillor, he needs to be regularly available to the people,” he said.

Kula still insists that he can serve his community well, and will be quitting his legal profession:

Kulasegaran, however, said he would not face problems in carrying out his duties as both MP and councillor. “As I have vast knowledge on local council affairs, I am expected to play a pivotal role in Ipoh City Council,” he said. He added that he would quit as a lawyer soon to concentrate on his dual role.

As for me, I still believe another person should have been given a chance. Definitely there are equally or better qualified people in Ipoh? Kulasegaran can still provide input and assistance via his position as MP. The intentions may be good, but the perception of the public will be negative. Bad move for Pakatan.

Pas Youth sent away with tails between its leg

Well, we can always trust PAS to create problem for the triumvirate. DAP and PKR are more liberal and encompass general Malaysian values, while PAS only represents a section of the society.

This time, PAS Youth opposed the selection of performers for Sultan of Selangor Cup (annual football match between Selangor and Singapore) and threatened to organise a demonstration. The organisers chose Ella and Mas Idayu. I heard of Ella, but not the other singer, so don’t ask me. You can ask PAS since these guys said the ladies dress sexily and danced provocatively (like those middle east belly dancers?). I guess that depends on the eye of the beholder (PAS Youth may have some eyesight problems) since other Malaysians don’t seem to complain.

Their protest received condemnation from practically everyone. The singers gave them an earful.

Are they saying that if all artistes were banned from performing on stage, social illnesses would be eradicated?

The Sultan saw it fit to reply in anger. He said their action was “trivial”. My, is that an insult or what! All this would have made PAS to sweat.

The public  meanwhile, laughed at this jokers.

Khalil, alarmed at the controversy, plans to arrange meeting between PAS youth and the palace.

And today’s breaking news says that PAS dropped its plan to protest. It would only send a letter to the organisers.

Please wake up PAS. You are in Selangor, not middle east.

Selangor free water not free?

Service charge Rm6???? What the hell is that?

Menteri Besar Khalil says (The Star):

“If the usage is less than 20 cu m or RM11.40, he (the consumer) does not have to pay the water charges but he has to pay a RM6 service charge,

I never seen such charge before in my bill. Is this pulling wool over our eyes? Why announce free, when its actually not so. Free means no need to pay. Are they too stupid to understand this simple thing? Don’t be like those jokers who made the “free schooling” statement la.

Pakatan should be transparent announce how much they will subside monthly. Why Syabas need to collect RM6 when KDEB is supposed to pay on behalf of the rakyat.

We can use free water up to RM11.40, but need to pay RM6. Meaning, we actually can benefit RM5.40 only. So, should I collect this amount of water and sell it for a discounted price of RM4 or RM5?

Very interesting indeed. What if someone asks him back about 50 years track record? What guarantees are there that requests from these states will be given due consideration? One can just hope.

BINTULU: The Education Ministry wants Pakatan Rakyat state governments to disclose how much land would be set aside for the construction of new vernacular, mission and religious schools in the respective states.

Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said his ministry had yet to receive any plan from these states although the Opposition made lavish promises to the people during the general election campaign.

“Now, I want to see them fulfil their promises.

“Even in Penang, the DAP has yet to talk about allocating land for Chinese schools, Tamil schools, Sekolah Agama or mission schools.

Free Water in Selangor

I thought Khalil’s plan will fall flat, especially when Syabas said they could not come to an agreement regarding the payment period. However, in the last one day, the Selangor government, through Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) has managed to successfully negotiate a longer payment period.

Even though the free water plan is starting from June 16 and will be reflected from next month’s bill onwards, nonetheless its been successfully pulled off by Pakatan government. But for how long it can be sustained is a question mark. The subsidy is expected to cost RM1.1 million per month for 20 cubic metre per household (according to Malaysiakini). However, NST reports that its going to cost a whopping RM10.8 million per month! The Star provided its own figure of RM1.8 million per month. Looks like 3 parties with three different figures.

There are arguments that providing free water will make people more wasteful and less concerned about conserving water. Anything free won’t be appreciated easily.

What do you think?
