PAS leader supports HINDRAF Raya visit

I think the comment by Pas leader Abdul Hadi Awang is to offset the religious tone made by UMNO leaders and their related NGOs. The visit by HINDRAF to Hari Raya open house is being labeled as “insult to PM”, “insult to Islam’, “insult to Muslims”, “spoiling country’s image”, “causing anger among the Malays”, “rude”, “treachery”, “irresponsible”, and many more negative comments. Thus, this is seen as trying to incite the Malay community to go against HINDRAF. By having PAS support, this attack is somewhat nullified.

The Pas chief said the action by the the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) at the prime minister’s and cabinet’s Hari Raya open house on Wednesday was part and parcel of democracy. Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said it signalled a change in the democratic practices in the country that should be viewed positively.

“I don’t think it was rude. That’s democracy. In the United States, people demonstrate in front of the White House. It’s not like they caused a commotion or started fighting,” he said after the party’s Hari Raya gathering at the Tarbiyyah headquarters yesterday.

His comments were dismissed by Information Minister Ahmed Shaberi Cheek who said:

Describing Hadi’s understanding of democracy as off tangent, Ahmad Shabery said it was unbecoming of the PAS chief to liken the action by an illegal group as a normal practice in a democratic country like the United States.

“Do not liken demonstrations in front of the White House with the action of Hindraf supporters who had disrupted an Aidilfitri open house. It was the time for the Prime Minister, his deputy, and ministers to meet the people.

“The action had tarnished the hari raya celebration and the goodwill spirit advocated by Malaysians. We should not misuse democratic practices.

“Just because he is eyeing for votes from Hindraf supporters, he (Hadi) is willing to forget the sanctity of hari raya celebration,”

50 percent bumi housing quota in Kedah

I fail to see the logic of this move by PAS-led Kedah. This Pakatan Rakyat state announced that its new policy is to have 50% bumiputra quota for housing schemes. The Menteri Besar said that it was to compel developers to build affordable homes for all Kedahans, while EXCO Phahrolrazi said:

among the policy’s main objectives was the need to check racial polarisation as racial homogeneity could be observed in some new housing schemes.

He said housing schemes should have a healthy mix of people from various religious and racial backgrounds to promote racial integration, tolerance and understanding.

The Menteri Besar, Azizan Abdul Razak, was also quoted in NST that the policy would not deprive other communities of the right to own houses. He said that this decision was made because it was found that many Bumiputeras could not purchase houses because the quota was already taken up.

A majority of 1.5 million people (out of the estimated two million people) are Malays and the rest a mix of Indians, Chinese and others, and we have proof that when a Bumiputera wants to buy a house, the developer would say they have been sold.

In other words, the MB says that developers are lying in order to maintain a certain exclusivity for the housing projects.

The MB disagreed with the comments made by Housing Developers Association of Malaysia (Rehda) Kedah/Perlis chairman Ricque Liew that property developers in Kedah might have to close shop if the state government did not revoke the policy.

Liew had said that the state government should stick to the national policy where the Bumiputera quota was fixed at 30 per cent because even some Malays did not want to buy Bumiputera lots as they could not make much of a profit when they sold them later on.

He had said that the value of Bumiputera units did not appreciate much and buyers often had problems reselling them as they must sell to Bumiputera buyers only.

Liew added that “such a policy will only restrict the Malays from making a profit at market value.”

Now, the idea that this policy would not deprive other communities is a joke. You are taking a bigger slice of the pie, and there’s no indication that the pie is getting bigger. So, essentially, you are reducing the leftover pie. Unless there is proof that non-bumiputra units are not sold completely, indicating lack of interest, its pretty clear that this is a discriminatory and depriving policy. So, I hope the MB can clarify.

Secondly, why not get rid of the such handout mentality, and just have a policy based on income-level? In this way, the poor Chinese, Siamese, Indonesians, Indians and others can also benefit. Isn’t that more fair, even in Islam? Hopefully the mufti or other learned people can explain better?

Let’s see now what Pakatan Rakyat team members (DAP and PKR) have to say. Also, Waytha of Hindraf may want to issue a media statement on this. Then, it will be the turn of the opposition parties – MCA/Gerakan/MIC to attack PAS. There’s a caveat though, there must be numbers to substantiate the demand for houses in Kedah for both bumiputra and non-bumiputra lots in the past few years.

JAG condemns Kedah restriction on female artistes

I’m always worried when read about PAS-led states. They are the weakest link in the Pakatan Rakyat since they are theological-based while the other two are secular. At least in BN, its all racial or secular based.

Now, the Kedah government announces that women artistes can only perform in front of female audience but there are restrictions for open space performance. Now, if this was limited to Islamic functions or those involving Muslims, I won’t be bothered as its within their religious aspect. But this rule cannot be extended to other races who have their own beliefs. Why should one follow rules based on other religion, something which they don’t believe? Surely comical to say the least.

JAG (Joint Action Group for Gender Equality) are rightly angry with this and claim that is a rule that violates the Constitution since its gender discrimination.

It violates women’s right to work and express themselves and denies the significant contributions of women in arts and entertainment and attempts to silence women’s voices.

“The involvement of women in the entertainment profession is not alien to Malaysian culture.

Not to mention it attempts to stop one from earning a living, denies opportunity to be in a profession that one likes, and also attempts to stiffle development of the arts and entertainment industry.

Imagine THR Raaga concert with only the guys, or Jaclyn Victor banned from shows in Kedah.

Kedah government better clarify their rules and perhaps discuss with Pakatan Rakyat top guns first before going around making rules that infringe on others’ rights.

I think PAS will be the downfall of the Pakatan Rakyat. Not BN, not Anwar Ibrahim, not the Indian community, and certainly not Mahathir.

Malaysiakini reports that the state government had imposed an indefinite ban on rock, pop, reggae, and dangdut shows. Hmm…bad news indeed. So, no THR Raaga concert in Kedah?

According to the state government, such concerts have a negative influence on youths. The Star newspaper today quoted state executive councillor Dr Ismail Salleh as saying that the administration does not “condone any gelek-gelek (gyrations) on stage.”

Ismail said the state is currently formulating a comprehensive guideline for concerts and informed that the ban will remain until further notice.

However, he added that the state government is not opposed to entertainment but stated that concerts could have a negative influence.

But PAS Info officer Mahfuz Omar himself was in the dark about this ban.

SIS meanwhile are asking Pakatan Rakyat to state their stand. Another headache for Anwar and his team.

Ini PAS memang problem…

Hudud laws anyone?

Nik Aziz sure knows how to trump his fellow party leaders. His statement on suggestion that hudud and gisas laws to be used by a merged UMNO – PAS. As reported in Malaysiakini, MCA was the first one off the blocks to oppose this suggestion. This was stated by its Youth secretary-general, Wee Ka Siong. The deputy education minister has described Nik Aziz’s idea as “totally unacceptable by MCA”.

I am disappointed and gravely concerned with Nik Aziz’s statement to implement hudud and qisas laws as it would mean the creation of a theocratic Islamic state.

I urge Umno to object against PAS’ proposal as it is a matter of principle.

So far, Gerakan and PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak), two small parties in the coalition had come out with statements that cautions the UMNO-PAS discussions.

Have to wait another few days for MIC, but its politicians who blog already have something to say. Check out Murugesan‘s blog. Not sure about Saravanan.
