Criminal Councillors in Ampang?

It seems that two nominees to a Selangor municipal council have been accused of having been involved in criminal activities just few days before they are to be sworn in as Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) councillors next Tuesday. Those two candidates are being investigated by the police following complaints by the public. NST reports that three of them have problems.

At least three candidates, already issued appointment letters as
councillors, are being scrutinised following claims by an Ampang
resident that two had police records for robbery and involvement with
the underworld. Another is alleged to have served time under preventive laws. Checks with the police confirmed that at least one had a criminal record

I have to blame the committee (including Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin) who vetted the nominees. The naming of councillors were delayed for three over months due to different selection process as compared to previous government.

Khalid had said that the three-month delay was due to the time taken to vet the list, which was sent to the respective councils last
week

However, all candidates should have been vetted by ACA, police, Insolvency Department, Bank Negara, Syariah court (for muslims), MPAJ and the rest of the cavalry. This would have ensured a better selection of candidates. Candidates who won’t be disputed.

Now, Khalid Ibrahim says it will take another 6 months to vet the candidates, and those found guilty will be removed.

Over the next six months, we will check the backgrounds of all the 288 councillors selected by the state government

Zuraida also clarified that:

Zuraida said a committee had vetted the list based on certain criteria and quotas. “We had submitted names of people who have worked hard and shown consistent performance. “The two nominees in question were genuine in helping us. They did not take a single sen from me,” she said. Zuraida added that the nominees would be removed if there was evidence of criminal activities.

Meanwhile, MPAJ boss created an escape route by denying any knowledge:

MPAJ president Mohammad Yacob said he was shocked by the allegation. He said the council did not have any details of the nominees because the state government provided the list.

Cronyism in PKR led Selangor?

Frankly speaking, I can’t accept the ridiculous reason given by Rusli, Anwar’s younger brother that both Anwar and MB Khalid Ibrahim never knew of his appointment as Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad’s (KDEB) special advisor in APRIL, just a month after general elections.

Rusli said that in April, he was appointed special advisor to KDEB
president Abdul Karim Munisar with no executive power and is not a
member of the board of director in any companies held by KDEB

Its not a matter of knowing or not knowing, but a critical issue of public perception. Surely the brother is not so stupid to realise the implications when people hear about his appointment, given that KDEB is state owned investment arm. This is the sacrifice that people in politics have to make. When a person joins politics and hold (virtual) power, the whole family plus relations suffer due to the public’s expection of ethics. He should have not accepted the position in the first place.

If people can question Mahathir, Badawi, Samy Vellu, Ong Ka Ting, Ling Liong Sik, etc., surely can question Anwar! This is not “baseless accusations” but the perception created in the eyes of the public.

Even though Rusli has resigned, the damaged has been done. More ammo for BN and especially Toyo’s Selangor BN.

PKR crisis in Selangor

Looks like Khalil manages to find another issue to be embroiled in. He seems to be in the papers for all the wrong reasons nowadays.

Before ACA concluded their inquiry, he announced that his aide is suspended. The guy was not informed prior to the announcement it seems. The aide, Yahya Mat Sahri had quit the post and also as Selangor PKR secretary. I understand that the MB wants to show that there will be fair and unimpeded investigation, but he should have informed the affected party.

Meanwhile, several division heads in Selangor PKR are unhappy that key positions such as councilors were not being given to the party warriors, but instead allocated to professionals.

We are angry that many of our pejuang (party warriors), especially division heads, were not appointed into the government, including as local councillors.
We are not happy as the people we named were not only qualified but were with the party during reformasi (reformation) time and even braved teargas and beatings for the party,

Fathers Day at Istana Negara

Following is report from Malaysiakini on the HINDRAF-organised Father’s Day gathering at Istana Negara today. Earlier, it was reported that YB Manikavasagam and YB Sivarasa were among the 6 people arrested at the gathering.

Interestingly, Ronnie Liu ACCEPTED the bear on behalf (of the KING?). I’m not sure who he is representing, definitely not the King.

I think Hindraf have to look beyond flowers, teddy bears and other gifts, as it may be shunned if seemed to be not effective. There should be some brainstorming session to ensure it gets continuous support from the Makkal. Makkal will forget the suffering and sacrifices of the Hindraf 5 if not constantly reminded, but there should be variety of ways to maintain the momentum. Perhaps some sort of branding and merchandising strategy – T-shirts, caps, car stickers, badges could be created. They can get support in the Pakatan states, so that’s a good starting point.

The intention of 48 children of ISA detainees to present Father’s Day gift of teddy bears to the Agong was dampened by the police and a no-show from palace representatives.

Chanting “Daulat Tuanku”, the children carrying teddy bear bouquets accompanied by about 30 adults were stopped from approaching the palace by police who formed a barricade 500 meters from the palace gates at around 10.40 this morning.

Policemen, already alert after an earlier arrest of three opposition parliamentarians, were quick to gather around the crowd. A senior police officer approached event leaders who were Hindraf leaders – RS Thananenthiran (national coordinator), S Jayathas (national information coordinator) and A Vathemurthy (Perak state coordinator) – requesting that the crowd to disperse immediately.

Thananenthiran then shouted that “We are Malaysian citizens who would like to present a gift to the father of all Malaysians.”

There were continuous pleas from the crowd which argued that as Malaysian citizens they should have the right to gather in front of the palace without a permit.  “Tourists are allowed to gather and present gifts, so why can’t we? This must be changed. We have all the right to rally peacefully,” said Vathemurthy.

The heat under the strong sun caused some of the children – from five to 15 years of age – to begin crying in discomfort.

Thananenthiran then asked the police to be compassionate with the children. The police officer fired back that although he loved children, they were being only being ‘utilised’ by Hindraf leaders. » Read more: Fathers Day at Istana Negara

Selangor Free Water

I have a gut feeling that this “free water” (actually the first 20 cubic metres only) thing may fall flat on Khalid’s face. The new government needs to scrutinise the laws properly before making any announcement. We have seen how the Bandar Mahkota Cheras saga dragged for weeks, until the federal government made use of the opportunity to help gag Grand Saga. They could have done it earlier, but didn’t. They waited perhaps until PKR’s inability to solve the crisis is revealed.

In this case, Syabas says no letter has been issued to them till yesterday, but today KDEB said letter had just been released. Then there’s the question of who can actually issue the directive. Is it the federal level ministry or the state government?

Whatever it is, the state opposition will be waiting with claws sharpened to pounce on the smallest mistake by PR government.

If Khalid fails to keep his words, the rakyat won’t be interested to listen to his excuses, just like now the rakyat not interested to listen to federal government’s excuses on fuel price increase.

Khalil may well be the first to be forced out or resign if he goes around simply promising things.

As for me, I don’t mind getting bill with discount 🙂

You will get 20 cubic metres of free water from this month. This is the guarantee given by Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to consumers following conflicting statements over the past few days.
“The state government guarantees that residents will enjoy their first 20 cubic metres of free water starting from this month as has been announced before,” Khalid said. » Read more: Selangor Free Water
