But Welsh predicted Abdullah's Umno, BN's lynchpin, could lose up to 15 parliamentary seats in upcoming polls and its senior coalition partner MCA could drop about six seats. 
The ethnic Indians are also discontented. At least 30,000 of them defied police warnings and held rare protests in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week against what they see as racial discrimination.

Less pay, bonuses for employees next year
PETALING JAYA: Employees may not enjoy the same salary increase and bonuses they received this year come 2008.
This was revealed in the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) Salary and Fringe Benefits Survey for Executives and Non-Executives 2007 here Thursday.
Speaking during a conference, MEF president Datuk Azman Shah said this was due to various uncertainties in the global market.
"Increasing oil prices and costs, coupled with business uncertainties in the global market, are making a huge impact.
"Our findings have forecast that both salary increase and bonuses for executives and non-executives may not match that of 2007," said Azman.
The survey was carried out among 233 companies nationwide who are members of the MEF.
Azman said on average, employees were looking at a 5.74% (non-executive) and 5.69% (executive) salary increase next year compared to 6.25% and 5.77% respectively this year.
"Even the average forecast bonus in 2008 for non-executives and executives is lower by 0.26 months and 0.31 months respectively compared to 2007," he said.
There was, however, some good news for employees in several industries.
The survey forecast that executives in the construction, banking, petroleum, electrical and diversified industries will receive a high salary increase, as will non-executives in diversified, wholesale, business services, electrical and petroleum industries.
Azman said the survey also found more companies adopting performance-linked wage systems, rather than just focusing on seniority.
However, he warned that a high monthly turnover of employees could be expected next year.
He attributed this to the tightening of markets, more professionals being snapped up by foreign firms and a surplus in foreign workers.
Azman later launched two MEF publications – The Analysis of Collective Agreements and Awards On Terms and Conditions of Employment 2006; and Leave and Absenteeism in Employment (Cases, Commentary and Materials).

PUTRAJAYA: People have been urged not to blame the Indian community for the illegal gathering organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) last Sunday.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who is the Education Minister, said Hindraf did not represent many Indians. “Our enemies are not the Indians, so everyone must remain rational,” he said after chairing his ministry's post-Cabinet meeting here yesterday. The majority of Indians love the country and want stability, he added.
He urged Hindraf not to play with fire. “Who in their right mind would accuse us of demolishing a temple every three weeks or say there is ethnic cleansing.”
Meanwhile, in Sungai Petani, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Datuk Johari Baharom said the Government planned to seek compensation from Hindraf and those involved in the recent illegal gathering for damage to public property.
In CAIRO, Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said several groups of students who met him expressed their anger over Hindraf leaders’ move to ask Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II to intervene in Malaysia’s internal affairs.
He said they were angry that Hindraf had ignored the Yang di- Pertuan Agong in highlighting the problems faced by the Indian community in Malaysia.
Hishammuddin: No need to get emotional over Hindraf
PUTRAJAYA: Malays have been advised not to get emotional over the accusations made by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).
Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said although the contents of Hindraf's letter to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown incited racial and religious sentiments, they were also "illogical". "It did not represent the views of all Indians in Malaysia. In this matter, our enemy is not the Indian community. Hindraf doesn't represent all Indians, so be rational. "Don't get emotional. Don't get trapped in Hindraf's political strategy. There are masterminds behind them who are just out to create a confrontation," he said yesterday.
Reading from a copy of the letter purportedly signed by Hindraf's legal adviser P. Uthayakumar, Hishammuddin said the group had accused the Malaysian government of being backed by Islamic terrorists, and of carrying out ethnic-cleansing and a mini-genocide of the Indian population.
"Who in their right mind will say that we have a shoot-to-kill policy against Indians, that one person is killed every two weeks while in police custody, or that every three weeks one Hindu temple is demolished? "They have a clear objective which is to cause trouble. Unlike other protests, this clearly touches on race and religion." He said Umno Youth would not be cowed by or taken in by Hindraf's claims which were aimed at sowing dissent.
He added that whatever grievances the Indian community had, they were not the only ones sounding out a "cry of desperation". "We hear this cry from all races too. Our policies address all races and such issues have been and will continue to be addressed. But we can't satisfy everyone overnight."
Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the party should take legal action against members of Hindraf for alleging that Umno was responsible for the killing of Malaysian citizens during the Kampung Medan incident. He said this allegation was not true. "We have to set the record straight, otherwise many people will have negative perceptions of Umno," he said. Khairy hoped Umno members — particularly Youth members would react in a mature way to the provocation.
He acknowledged the possibility of foreign influence being behind the group. "I deny the allegation that Indians are treated like slaves in Malaysia. The Barisan Nasional government is for everyone," he said. Khairy added that certain quarters wanted to show that the people are upset with the government since elections would be held soon.
He also reiterated that Hindraf members did not represent the majority of Indians in Malaysia as those who participated in the illegal rally numbered a few thousand compared with the millions in the country," he said. "I am sure that the majority of Indians support the government and Umno."
In Sungai Petani, Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said the police would file a suit against Hindraf for the damage it suffered while handling the illegal assembly. Besides damage to properties owned by the police, many policemen were also injured in the illegal gathering on Sunday, he said, adding that the police were assessing the damage.

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Yang Di-Pertua, I would like to touch on a matter regarding the Ministry of Education, which are Christian missionary schools like Convent, La Salle, Methodist, and so forth. I was made to understand that the Board of Directors at these schools are partially administered by churches in foreign countries, for example in the Vatican City. I was also made to understand that the application to build a 'surau' in some of these schools had to go through the approval of these Board of Directors whereby they are partially administered by the church. Therefore, it shames me that the school administrations are still controlled by the church. I was also made to understand that many Muslim parents send their kids to these schools, and that they have complained that sometimes, the school is started with church songs. I do not know if this is true, but what I discovered from these parents are the display of religious symbols. I feel disappointed that in an Islamic country, Malaysia, if I go to a convent school, the statue of St. Mary is displayed in the front of the school.

I do not understand the Ministry of Education, did the officers not see that, or is it our policy to allow such a thing? Nevertheless, I, as a responsible person to my religion, race, and country, I state my views that these statues need to be demolished, these crosses need to be destroyed and church influences in these schools need to be stopped. Also, the funds that are collected at these schools. Do we have a report? If possible, the ministry should reveal the funds for these schools. I was made to understand that these schools are also sponsored by the church.

About 100 people had gathered outside the Giant hypermarket in Section 13, Shah Alam, on Sunday to vent their anger.
The crowd had been irked by an incident where the hypermarket’s security guards had allegedly assaulted an Indian youth and insulted the Hindu religion. Armed with placards, which among others read ‘Don’t insult our religion’, the demonstrators demanded that Giant apologise and sack the security guards involved.
The technician filed a police report on Nov 19 with the Section 11 police station in Shah Alam after he was released. It could not be ascertained how long Sashindran was detained. According to the report, a copy of which was obtained by Malaysiakini, Sashindran claimed that the security guards had also erased a religious marking on his forehead. Apart from this, they also allegedly snatched his locket containing a picture of the Hindu deity, Lord Krishna, and threw it away. ‘Mental torture’ “I placed the (car accessories) on the counter to pay but then received a phone call from my uncle. I answered the phone away from the counter and upon returning was stopped by the two guards,” Shasindran stated in his report. “Then I was brought into a room where they beat me up and forced me to confess to stealing (the car accessories) when I did not even do it,” he added. However, Shashindran claimed that he made a confession after being subjected to ‘mental torture’ by the two security guards. “That is when they placed the items which I had supposedly tried to steal into my sling-bag and took me to the police station,” he added. Contacted today, Giant marketing director Ho Mun Hao denied Sashindran’s account of the incident. He claimed that the CCTV recording at the outlet “clearly showed” that the technician was attempting to shoplift the items. “If he wants to bring it to court, so be it. We have evidence that he did steal those items. He is cornered and (that is why) he is trying to turn the matter into a race issue now,” he said. ‘Death threat’ According to Sashindran, his ordeal did not end with the security guards. He alleged that a police officer at the Section 11 police station had also threatened him when the security guards took him there.
“He (Azami) said he can shoot me and dump my body anywhere and my family or friends will not find out about it. It was an attempt to get my confession and I did (confess). I feared for my life,” he said. Shah Alam district police chief Noorazam Jammaludin told Malaysiakini that he would call for an internal probe to determine if Azami had acted irresponsibly when questioning Sashindran. “We also sent Sashindran to the Klang Hospital to do a medical check-up to see if he was indeed assaulted by the two Giant security guards,” he said. Sashindran has since been charged with theft and is currently on bail pending trial. |
In the Nov 16 incident, R Sashindran, 22, was allegedly beaten up by two security guards after they accused him of trying to steal car accessory products. 
In his Nov 19 police report, the youth claimed that “Sergeant Azami Saari” had threatened to kill him if he did not confess.
