THE Selangor government will set up a foundation to help the children of estate workers in their studies so that they will not be dependent on estate jobs, said Tamil Nesan.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said the state government realised that estates had to make way for development in future and there would be less estate jobs.
He said the state spent about RM1mil last year on the education of estate workers’ children and RM2mil had been set aside for the purpose this year.
Last year, he added, the state government worked with MIC’s Social Strategic Foundation to train children of estate workers acquire vocational skills at the Inpens International College in Klang.
The daily also reported that all MIC branch chairmen in Johor had been asked to register Indian youths who attained the age of 21 as voters.
Johor MIC chief Datuk K.S. Balakrishnan said the chairmen must identify the youths and get them registered without delay

IJOK: Entertainment figures have descended here to lend a carnival-like atmosphere in the campaign of the Ijok by-election.
Superstar Mawi made an appearance to the delight of the folks here a few days ago but it was the unexpected “re-appearance” of the legendary Maradur Gopalamenon Ramachandran (MGR) on Thursday night which was talked about.
The real MGR may have died 20 years ago but thanks to local impersonator M.G. Lakshmanan, the former chief minister
who became famous as a movie star, the actor was brought back to life to campaign for Barisan Nasional’s candidate K. Parthiban.
Evening of stars: (From left) Raja Raja Cholan, Samy, M.S. Britto and local MGR impersonator M.G. Lakshmanan belting out a number in Ijok on Thursday night. The “new” MGR went by the name of “Malaysia MGR.”
More than 500 people attended the cultural show organised by the Malaysian Indian Artistes Association at the SK (T) Batang Berjuntai field.
Judging from the response of the crowd, they were thrilled.
When MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Parthiban arrived at the show, the song Neenga Nall Irukanum, Naadu Munnayrum (You must be in good health and the country will prosper) was played and the people gave a thunderous applause.
Other artistes who performed were local well-known singers Raja Raja Cholan, M.S. Britto, Pa Maheswaran and Jayashree.
Samy Vellu himself belted out two oldies – Aacham Enpathu Madamaiyada (It is stupid to fear challenge) and Aganthamam Un Malaiyum, a love song – getting tremendous applause from his audience.
In his speech, he said Parthiban had good education and was of impeccable character.
A few days ago, the Mawi concert in Bukit Badong drew some 3,000 people.
An Umno state youth leader said: “We just want the folks to lighten up. Mawi is a good choice because he is huge.
“Of course, we don’t expect voters to choose us just because we brought Mawi here but it sure brings in the crowd.”
New data system for schools
April 22nd, 2007after so many years on IT implementation and initiatives, we are now only rolling out a computer system?
What were the ministers and ministry in the last 10 years doing? How was planning conducted without up-to-date data? We are talking about MSC, broadband access, wireless network, and yet no computerised student information system is available?
The joke is, the system is NOT online yet!

BANGI: Less bureaucracy and paperwork are on the cards for teachers.
The constant filling of forms and duplication of data, long a sour point for teachers who complained it took them away from teaching, will be a thing of the past with the Education Ministry’s new and improved Student Information System.
As of this year, the system, better known by its Malay acronym SMM, has finally been installed in all primary and secondary schools in the country, Education Ministry Schools Division director Noor Rezan Bapoo Hashim said yesterday.
However, the current system in schools is still not online, and thus cannot be accessed by education district offices and state education departments.
The ministry yesterday launched a pilot project in 10 schools which combined the SMM system with a computer platform called Smart Thin Client, which will have the capacity to go online and make it easier for schools to store their students’ information. “It is a proven technology that helps us save costs and also help the teachers eliminate time spent on updating records and provide the ministry with timely submissions,” Noor Rezan said.
“We are happy with the results and will now deploy SMM on the Smart Thin Client to the 10 schools involved in the project, with the possibility of implementation nationwide if all goes well,” she said at the launch at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan 6, Bandar Baru Bangi here.
The SMM was first implemented by the ministry in 2004, and the ministry installed it in schools in stages, upgrading and improving it while it went along.
It maintains the student learning data for all the primary and secondary schools, storing the learning records and personal information of students as well as teaching staff.
Noor Rezan said if the pilot project was successful and approved by the ministry, all schools could be online by 2008 and information could be easily retrieved by education district offices and state education departments.
It is a mammoth task as there are around five million students in Malaysia, and the the figure is increasing, Noor Rezan said.
Currently the SMM, on its own, is installed on one computer in each school and only one teacher can access it at a time.
It cannot be installed on many computers due to the processing load and the difficulty in maintaining all of them individually.
With the new and improved system, now loaded on the Smart Thin Client platform, there is one network which links the computers in the school and does all the processing, relieving the burden on the individual computers.
The platform means that teachers can access the SMM database through any computer linked by it in the school.
This will also translate into big savings in upgrading and maintenance costs.
It will also allow teachers and headmasters to provide up-to-date information on their students faster and more accurately.
