Straight contest in hulu selangor

The two independent candidates have pulled out from the by-election contest, so its a straight fight between Kamalanathan and Zaid. I think this favors BN since the independents would have grabbed some votes from pro-BN voters.

Saw interview of Kamalanathan by Ahmad Talib in TV3’s Soal Jawab from 10pm till 11pm. Looked very rehearsed. Kamalanathan spoke Malay well, related his childhood, challenging working life and background which will make it easy for the rural area and those from low income background to relate to him. Good strategy. Kamalanathan talked about studying via correspondence, making some wrong decisions in choosing subjects, working in Sg Siput for about RM450-RM500, and so on  – things that can do well to highlight his humble background.

BUT, most disappointingly, there were not tough questions for a future MP to answer, just a “you ask, I answer” routine. Why talk about building UiTM campus? Why not UM or UPM, USM or any other of the IPTAs campus which will be open to all races? 1Malaysia ? Hmm… He also highlight one important point – Hulu Selangor has lots of land which BN can make use of (yup, he said that) to develop the place.  But what about sustainability? What kind of development is envisioned? How about environmental issues? He also mentioned about basic infrastructure (I presume its water, house, roads, electricity) as the main area of concern. Indirectly its pointing back to BN.

TV3 showed Kamalanathan making roti canai today, and having breakfast at a stall. Still no signs of Zaid in the prime time news.

I also remember Shafie Afdal talking in TV3 news about some “views” from the Orang Asli community regarding the upcoming law on land. Wah… it sounds totally different from what I read in the Sun the other day.  If the Orang Asli campaign well, can see BN lose significant votes here.

Hindraf meanwhile has given both candidates a list of things to be done, mostly involving proof in writing. They urge the voters to vote for the candidate who can fulfill the pledges.

Meanwhile, the “good news” about MAIKA shares takeover is losing its shine already. Vel Paari said it will take some time, and as some shareholders pointed out, the takeover will reimburse the invested amount, but what about the dividends and return from the appreciation of the ringgit? RM1 20 years ago will be worth much more now.

Today also saw PKR Hulu Selangor treasurer quiting PKR and joining UMNO, which may be the one that DPM Muhyiddin was mentioning yesterday. Another headache for PKR.

Election Commission removed offensive banners today, so hopefully the election will focus on benefits instead of personal attacks from now onwards.

Bigwigs like PM Najib and Tok Guru of PAS will be starting their work only towards end of the week, so not sure how this campaign will turn out. I feel more tricks will be pulled out of the bag by both sides as things get critical.

My feeling: BN still having upper hand as of today.

Samy Vellu spins story on Maika and Nesa

I can’t believe my eyes and ears. Did Samy Vellu just twisted his words  and blamed the loss of MAIKA shareholders on NESA’s injuction against  the sale of OAC for RM129 million? For many, many years, RM100 million did not give any returns and suddenly, a suit filed by NESA Coperative on 30th August 2007 is blamed for inability to reimburse the shareholders? What about the gap between 1986 and 2007 (a gap of 22 years? – where’s the profit/dividend, where the AGM reports? where’s…so many things?). Even if declared 10 sen dividend per year…

The press conference article appeared in Malaysiakini:

… As for Subramaniam, Samy Vellu accused him of holding up the sale of insurance company Oriental Capital Assurance Bhd to resolve the Maika Holding’s crisis.

Subramaniam is the head of Nesa Cooperative Bhd which purportedly took the injunction to stop the sale of the cash cow, an issue, Samy Vellu said, has been a thorn in the party’s ties with the Indians.

Samy Vellu who appeared annoyed, said the injunction prevented Maika Holdings from selling it to a prospective buyer who had since withdrawn his bid after the injunction was not lifted by Nesa Cooperative.

“The buyer had even given Maika Holdings a grace period of 10 days to get the injunction withdrawn and even paid a deposit of between RM13 million and RM14 million but the injunction was not withdrawn (by Nesa Cooperative),” he told reporters at a function in Kuala Lumpur.

He said since Subramaniam was the chairperson of Nesa Cooperative, the company’s action could indirectly be attributed to Subramaniam.

“Without him, I don’t think this (the injunction) would have happened,” he said.

Samy Vellu said he had tried to be “friendly” with Subramniam “but there was no solution on sight for the Maika Holdings sale.”

He lamented that the action by Nesa Cooperative had prevented Maika Holdings shareholders from getting back their money and now he had to take a bank loan to pay some of the shareholders who wanted their investment back.

“I feel sad for the shareholders some of who are very poor and they wanted the money,” he said, adding that if the sale had gone through, the shareholders numbering over 60,000 would have got back their initial investment and bonus shares.

And this press conference by Samy Vellu with Palanivel next to him was shown  on TV3 Buletin Utama just now.

Read excerpts from a letter published in Malaysiakini (Feb 12 2008) below:

X

… Maika Holdings raised RM108 million in 1981 from Indians, especially rural folks from the lower- and middle-income groups. These people were told to use their life savings – and even sell their jewelry – to invest in Maika Holdings because they were told the company would give them returns that were 10 to 20 times their initial investment. This, of course, is sweeter an offer than any licensed bank could make.

Samy Vellu, whose rhetoric needs no introduction, managed to fool these mostly not-so-well- educated individuals into parting with their money.

If you ask anyone who was in MIC at that time about how they organised groups of people to go out there to convince the masses to part with their money, you will be surprised. They even went to the extent of telling would-be investors to sell their properties and cattle to invest in Maika Holdings.

In other countries, this would have been considered a huge financial scandal, not just because of the amount of money involved, but because of the number of people involved in fleecing equally vast numbers of poor and less-educated citizens.

The RM108 million then had a buying power that was 10 to 15 times its value today. In today’s terms, it would be valued between RM1 billion and RM1.5 billion. Shortly after the initial investments were collected, the recession in the mid-1980s enabled the cash-rich Maika Holdings to go shopping for properties and collect fantastic deals.

If those properties were still in the hands of Maika Holdings, the company would be worth some RM3 billion to RM5 billion today. But those properties were sold at below-market prices through shady deals in which more money was transferred under the table than through actual and legal sales agreements.

Some of us may also remember the Telekom shares scandal, in which Maika Holdings was extended an offer to buy Telekom shares during its initial public offering (IPO). But Maika Holdings did not buy the Telekom shares. Instead, Samy Vellu bought them through his personal company, because Maika Holdings, supposedly, did not have the money to do so.

Maika Holdings could have made RM30 million, but this opportunity was hijacked by the sole defender and representative of the Indian community.

Telekom was only the first privatised government department. Since then, many other government agencies and departments have been privatised. As with Telekom Malaysia, shares were offered to Maika Holdings, but the offers were hijacked over and over again by Samy Vellu and his gang.

Using the Maika Holdings money, the gang bought into well-run companies and turned them upside down by appointing their own people to run these companies, squandering away the profits with luxurious parties and lavish parties, and, finally, by closing down these companies. They plundered in epic proportions.

To date, Maika shareholders have received almost nothing for their investments. The Maika Holdings scandal has cost many their life savings, property, opportunities to send their children for advanced education and so much more.

Recently, during a political speech, Samy Vellu announced that he will return RM1.30 for every RM1 invested in Maika Holdings and set a deadline of 100 days to do so. At the end of the deadline, however, he conveniently turned around and said that he has nothing to do with Maika Holdings because Maika Holdings is a business enterprise and he is only the president of MIC.

The managing director of Maika Holdings, Vel Pari, the son of Samy Vellu, then said that he did not know of any such deadline and, as such, is not bound to honour any kind of commitment.

Those who had the courage to go to Maika Holdings’ annual general meeting last year were met by thugs who intimidated and harassed anyone who raised questions about the management.

NESA filed the suit due to the way the AGM was held. Read about it here and see pictures of an injured man at the shameful AGM here. You can read more on the AGM at this website. Also read this article in Aliran magazine.

Due to the injuction (for TWO long years, what  have the MAIKA leadership been doing? Never discuss with NESA?), nothing seemed to happen. There were claims by Samy Vellu that that those who turn up at MIC HQ will be reimbursed by him but did it materialise?

Due to the delay of two years, Salcon, the company that wanted to buy MAIKA cashcow OAC pulled out.

Samy Vellu super interview

Among all the interviewees in NST Live, past and even the future, Samy Vellu will emerge as victor. Simply the best interview replies I’ve heard so far. No quarters given. Hard hitting….but in the end, does it serve any purpose to be antagonistic?

Samy takes on all comers, including queries on his ‘planted’ hair

KUALA LUMPUR, Mon:

MIC chief Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu held nothing back when he engaged NSTLive readers during a two-hour session this morning. He was straight forward to the point of being blunt with readers who asked questions which he had answered many times before. But he was also indulgent, giving a detailed reply to a question on his his hair — is it real or planted?

He brushed off questions on the MIC leadership succession plan, saying he not dictatorial like Adolf Hitler.

The colourful former works minister also let NSTLive readers in on what makes him happy — Indian food and singing. And after a lifetime in public life, Samy Vellu has one regret: that Indians don’t understand what he has done for the community.

Extracts from the NSTLive session. For the full version, visit www.nst.com.my

ON MAIKA HOLDINGS
Kumar: Datuk Seri, do you know that Maika Holdings is the only company which started with more than RM100 million hard cash yet it went down the drain under your very own eyes and stewardship. Is this among your achievements?
Samy Vellu: My friend, you are sadly mistaken, it has not gone down the drain. The money is still there. Maika Holdings owns more than 70 per cent of United Oriental Capital insurance company. Why don’t you read and understand all this?

MIC
MSMRK: Do you think MIC can still survive in the next general election?
Samy Vellu: Very few people know the grassroots (referring to its working class membership) nature of the MIC. We have survived even the times of emergency. I don’t see any reason why we cannot survive under new brilliant leader (Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

IQBAL Hassan: What have you done to date to hand over to the next leader of MIC?

Samy Vellu: The MIC has a president, deputy president and vice presidents. They were elected democratically by the members and I am surprised you don’t know who they are.

Tamilselvan: Do you agree you “finished” your opponents in MIC with iron fist, like what you did to Muthupalaniappan recently?

Samy Vellu: I don’t think you understand politics. You talk through your nose rather than talking through your mouth. Nobody finishes no one in the party. Muthupalaniappan is still safe and going around giving a lot of statements against everybody. I’m not Adolf Hitler. I’m just an ordinary Samy Vellu.

Raja: Datuk, years ago you told Tun Sambanthan to leave because of his age? Why are you still holding on to power?

Samy Vellu: Thank you Mr Raja. I have already decided and fixed my time to leave. Not because of my age. But, I want to hand over to a younger man. But please do remember, old is gold.

ON PPP’s DATUK T. MURUGIAH
Josephine: We like you so much but don’t overstay as we need new leaders. Maybe people like Murugiah to lead MIC.

Samy Vellu: I don’t want to say anything about Murugiah (Refused to take questions on Murugiah as it would seem to be interfering in the affairs of a component Barisan Nasional party).

ON HINDRAF

Paul Nathan: There is widespread belief that Hindraf was born of the failures of the MIC, especially under your long but dictatorial and corrupt leadership.

Samy Vellu: I think you have an affected mind where you do not understand how Hindraf came into being. They just want to tell the government on the dissatisfaction of the community on a piece of paper with some 18 or 19 requests and changes that they want. Whereas, the MIC, had carried out for the past 29 years several matters for the government with research papers where it has mentioned about the community’s backwardness, their educational backwardness, the poverty ratio of 30 per cent, the Tamil schools… In 1983, I started building Tamil schools after having studied the conditions. Many of the news of what was done was mostly published in the vernacular papers. If you can’t read Tamil, it is not my mistake.

ON PERAK

Kumar: What is your take on the political limbo in Perak?

Samy Vellu: Well, I must say, it is not the mistake of BN. It’s the PKR who started and went on a long campaign to rob members of parliament and form a government on Sept 16. I think the best solution will be to test their strength within the assembly.

Trey: Is MIC shameless? Why is your party fighting to be the speaker of the Perak assembly?

Samy Vellu: We are not fighting to have the MIC speaker. He is a BN speaker who represents the BN majority. I’m sorry to see your ignorance.

Kumar: To recap Datuk Seri, MIC was rejected in Perak?

Samy Vellu: If you feel that MIC was rejected, you are wrong. But, it is the policy of the BN government to provide opportunities for every community and that is the reason the BN leadership of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has approved this appointment (Speaker Datuk S. Ganesan).

ON INDIAN REPRESENTATION in CABINET

Nothing but wind: Many say that it was you who wanted one minister for MIC. Is it true?

Samy Vellu: It is not true. It is already been there before I became president. It was done by my predecessor. After I took office, we had one minister, we have talked to the BN chairman many times to increase it to the previous status quo of two. But, we had three deputy ministers, three parliamentary secretaries during my time.

ON SINGING
BRE Anthony: Dato Seri, you have a good voice and sing very well, do you practice in your house with karaoke?

Samy Vellu: I don’t do karaoke but I do sing sometimes. Singing makes me happy.

ON HIS REGRETS
SRS: What are your regrets if any in political life

Samy Vellu: SRS, the regret is, that people don’t understand what has been done for them. Under my leadership, the Indians have progressed very well and today in this country, only 30 per cent of Indians still under poverty. The MIC is continuously pursuing the matter with the government.

Samy hounded by MAIKA investors

MAIKA will be an albatross around the neck of MIC for as long as the investors are not refunded and those responsible are bought to justice. Samy can expect more such receptions as long as MAIKA issue can be used to raise the emotions of the community. Just mention MAIKA, and you most likely will see the amount of anger, contempt and hurt that people seem to register. Whether the person was actually a victim had become irrelevant. It (MAIKA) has spread like a virus, affecting the community in general.

If we remember correctly, Samy Vellu announced that the investors will be refunded with some amount, but its going to be a year now. Habuk pun tarak. When people want to ask, these guys ran away (that’s what I understand from “drove away”).

Well, if anyone have more information on the incident, please share. Meanwhile, read the article that appeared in the Star:

JOHOR BARU: A commotion broke out in a temple compound here when a group of people claiming to be Maika Holdings investors could not meet MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu yesterday. The group of about 50 had waited for more than three hours and became agitated when Samy Vellu refused to discuss their grievances over the losses they claimed to have suffered.

The protesters had initially gathered at around 9am outside the SJK (T) Ladang Ulu Tiram in Ulu Tiram near here. However, they rushed to the Arulmigu Thiru Murugan temple about 2km away when they found out that Samy Vellu was there.

At the temple, tempers flared between the protesters and MIC vice-president Datuk S. Sothinathan when they accused one another of speaking disrespectfully. The protesters calmed down and agreed to move out of the temple compound when they were told that the matter would be discussed outside.

The MIC leaders, however, later drove off.

Spokesman for the protesters, businessman K. Selvakumaran, 48, said they were upset because Samy Vellu had not responded to their questions about Maika Holdings.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Roslan Zainuddin said that the situation was under control and the protesters had dispersed peacefully.

Alex lodges Police Report against Samy over Maika

Earlier, Alex, the Klang MIC Division chairmen condemned Samy Vellu over the running of MIC. Now he goes one step further and makes a police report over Maika shares handled by MIC and Samy. NST carried an article (below), but copies of the report are shown online at Malaysia Today. He is reported to have said that documents are available to support his claims.

As usual, the reports will be investigated at their own leisurely pace. Meanwhile, what will happen to Alex? People who raise hands in MAIKA AGM also “kena hentam”, what more of own party man making police report?

Alex to lose MIC post in next few days?

Report against Samy Vellu

source
KLANG: The MIC division chief here Alex Thiagarasan lodged a police report on Thursday against party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
He said the allegations were in relation to Samy Vellu’s role in the Maika Holdings and Telekom shares scandal.

He also took a jab at former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying he was also responsible for what had happened as he did nothing to stop it.

“Samy Vellu is not an asset to MIC or Barisan Nasional.”

Thiagarasan said he was fully aware his actions may get him the sack, but even so, he would see to the end of this struggle.
Thiagarasan said he had all the evidence to incriminate Samy Vellu and was ready to hand it over to the police.
