Youth wings to tackle community’s woes

source

KUALA LUMPUR: The youth wings of the MIC, People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Indian Progressive Front (IPF) sat down together for the first time yesterday to discuss and join hands in tackling problems faced by the Indian community.

At the meeting chaired by MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran, they decided to form committees at division, state and national level to address the issues of temples, Tamil schools and job opportunities in the civil service.

“Any problem which cannot be resolved will be brought to the attention of MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to bring it to the Cabinet,” he said after the two-hour meeting.

PPP youth chief T. Murugiah and IPF youth chief R. Ravishankar were also present.

“The opposition parties are saying that we have not done anything but who is responsible for the benefits enjoyed by the community for the past 50 years?

“It is MIC with the support of PPP and the IPF who had fought and obtained land for temples and Tamil schools,” he said.

Vigneswaran said opposition parties like the DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat were using these issues to woo Indian votes.

“The issue is not really who cares or does good for the community. I believe the Indians will not be hoodwinked by such tactics.”

SJKT Tepi Sungai classes in storerooms

Bravo! Another entry for Book of Records! Maybe can give broom award as well for the relevant officers.

Since May 2003, classes running in MPK's (municipal council) storerooms and under trees??? 4 and a half years!!! This is indeed a shameful matter.

Post-Hindraf Rally, I think this issue will be settled soon since new building is slated to have ground breaking ceremony next month.

My twisted mind seems to say that the fire may be on purpose to facilitate building of new blocks or the urgent need for the piece land which houses the school! ๐Ÿ™‚

Storerooms serve as classes

KLANG: It is a first that no school wanted to achieve.

But SRK (T) Tepi Sungai has become the first school to operate fully in a local council's storerooms after an 11pm fire on Saturday.

The fire destroyed a classroom in the only functional block in the school. This has prompted the authorities to declare the block out of bounds.  With this, all six classes, the office and the staff room will now be located in the Klang Municipal Council's storage building.

A section of the school had collapsed in 2003 because of termite infestation and other buildings were subsequently declared unsafe.

The two-classroom block, housing Years Five and Six classes, and the canteen are the only structures still functional. Following the termite infestation, four classrooms, the office and the staff room were moved to the council's storerooms.

Education Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka P. Komala Devi said the ministry would be providing the furniture for the classrooms, using funds allocated for emergencies.

A new three-storey block would be built later. Komala Devi, MP for the area, said the ministry had allocated RM1 million for the new block. She said a ground-breaking ceremony for the new block would be held on Jan 21 and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu would be present. Samy Vellu had also ordered contractors to set up temporary classrooms for the pupils.

Parent-Teacher Association chairman M. Valiyedam, 58, said the earlier move to the storerooms was supposed to be a temporary solution but they had been there for more than four years now.

On the fire, district police chief ACP Mohamad Mat Yusop said police were investigating the incident.

Fire razes Tamil school's last building

By WANI MUTHIAH

KLANG: Until Saturday, there was only one building standing at the SJK (T) Tepi Sungai, a ramshackle structure housing two classrooms. Today, even that is no more.  The building was razed by fire that night.

Tables and chairs as well as the ceiling of a classroom were destroyed in the fire, which is believed to have occurred at about 11.30pm. In May 2003, part of the 100-year-old school building collapsed, and was demolished later after being declared unsafe.

Besides the two classrooms that were razed, the pupils have been having their classes at the nearby Klang Municipal Council (MPK) store as well as under several big trees in the school premises.

According to Education Ministry parliamentary secretary Komala Krishnamoorthy who went to the school yesterday morning, a security guard stationed there claimed two men had questioned him about the school at about 9pm on Saturday night. She added that the school's back fencing had also been cut. "The Fire and Rescue Department will be sending a team over on Monday to find out how the fire started and if it was arson," Komala said.

She added that MPK had agreed to clear more rooms in its store to be used as classrooms until the school's new building is ready.

"The ground-breaking ceremony for the new building will take place at 9.30am on Jan 21," Komala said, adding that the Government had already allocated the necessary funds for the construction of the new school building. The school's parent-teacher association (PTA) had requested a three-storey building with 16 classrooms, a computer lab, staff room, resource centre, library, canteen and a kindergarten on the 0.4ha site.

Meanwhile, an official from the South Klang Fire and Rescue Department said one fire engine and four personnel were despatched to the scene of the fire. He said the fire was brought under control in less than an hour.

Diehard fans honour MGR

By : R.S. Kamini

KUALA LUMPUR: He was the only actor that Indian movie fans idolised as "God".

Even 20 years after Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran's death, Indians all over the world still worship the legendary actor.

Popularly known as MGR, the actor-turned-politician was not only famous for his evergreen movies and songs, but also for his charitable nature and leadership capability.

B. Saroja Devi, an actress who was introduced to the movie world by MGR, said she was one of the lucky few who had the opportunity to know him personally.

"He was never greedy for fame. He was polished and spoke softly and lovingly to everyone, including his co-workers and film crew."

She said his virtues were reflected in his movies.

Saroja Devi said every Indian should live by his moral teachings.

"He is the only actor whose picture is hung in every home and business premises in south India because our people loved him and admired him.

"People see him as God because he made a difference in their lives."

Saroja Devi was attending a soft launch of the inaugural MGR Festival (MGR Kalai Vizha) by Datin Seri Indrani Samy Vellu at Wisma Tun Sambanthan here yesterday.

The three-day festival, which began yesterday commemorates the actor's 20th death anniversary tomorrow. It is part of efforts by MGR Clubs all over the country to spread awareness about the Indian icon among the younger generation.

MGR made his film debut in 1935 in the film Sathi Leelavathi and followed it up with hit movies such as Nadodi Mannan, Rajakumari and Ulagam Suttrum Valiban.

Besides acting for 25 years, he also directed and produced his own movies before entering politics and becoming the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

The festival's organising secretary, S.P. Manivasagam, said the event was the first of its kind in the region.

He said there would be an exhibition and performances at Wisma Tun Sambanthan and Wisma Peladang.

Most of the programmes, including the song and dance sequences, will be presented by youngsters.

"He should not become foreign to Indians, so we have to make an effort to ensure that his name and work are not forgotten, especially by the younger generation," said assistant organising secretary Solai Baskaran.

He added that MGR Clubs in Malaysia usually organise charity functions to commemorate his death anniversary every year.

Hindraf 'does not speak for majority of Indians'
By : K. Harinderan

KUALA LUMPUR: Claims made by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) do not represent the views of the majority of Indians.

Social Strategic Foundation executive director Datuk Denison Jayasooria said the organisation wanted to trigger religious sensitivities by using words like ethnic cleansing. "This is simply wrong. Their ploy will diminish the status of Indians." Jayasooria said this proved that Hindraf's motives were far from the truth and questionable. He said Indians had to be cautious and not be exploited by these claims which were baseless.

"I believe that Indians can distinguish between what is true and what is not." Jayasooria said it was up to the police to investigate Hindraf's claims. He said the government had helped many Indians become successful through various opportunities. "This clearly indicates that there are opportunities for Indians to progress in the country. "This has been achieved by addressing problems through democratic principles." Asked how Hindraf's claims had affected the Indian community, he said the government had responded by investigating its claims through organisations like the police and MIC.

"If Hindraf leaders claim to be followers of Gandhian principles, the act of throwing stones and opposing authority would not have happened." He said Malaysia was a proven model of a multi-racial democratic society which applied the due process of law and parliament to formulate laws and policies for its citizens. "Hindraf can destroy this process by taking the law into its own hands," Jayasooria said, adding that the country had no room for extremists. Jayasooria was commenting on a report yesterday which quoted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan as saying that the police were investigating Hindraf for allegedly stoking hatred against the government and inciting racial unrest.

Meanwhile, Putera MIC national co-ordinator P. Kamalanathan echoed Jayasooria's sentiments that Hindraf's motives were unfounded. "Its leaders have disgraced Indians and the country. They have been ungrateful to our forefathers who worked hard to develop peace and unity in the nation." On Hindraf's claim that Malaysia may go the way of Sri Lanka, he said although there was dissatisfaction among Indians here, there were specific avenues to voice grievances to the government. Kamalanathan believed that Hindraf had not exhausted the avenues to negotiate with the government.

Malaysian Hindu Youth Council president K. Rasaselvan said Hindraf's actions smacked of desperation as it was using racial and religious issues to gain support. "This has hurt the relationship between Indians and the government. "Unrest can never solve anything. This is all that Hindraf has managed to achieve."

Batu Caves illegal assembly case sees A-G laying charges

source

By WANI MUTHIAH

SHAH ALAM: Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Patail made a personal appearance at the Sessions Court here to lay charges against 26 people who allegedly took part in an illegal gathering at the Sri Subramaniar Temple in Batu Caves on Nov 25.

One of the charges was participation in an illegal assembly which led to an attempted murder. The high-powered prosecution team comprised Abdul Ghani, A-G’s Chambers’ prosecution head Datuk Yusof Zainal Abiden and Selangor prosecution chief Nik Suhaimi Nik Sulaiman.

The 26 were charged with being in an illegal assembly and using criminal force on policeman Dadi Abdul Rani with the intent of causing death, under Section 149 of the Penal Code that was punishable under Section 307 of the same code.  They were also charged with participating in an illegal assembly and causing damage to public property. Both are non-bailable charges. Ten of them claimed trial to a main charge under Section 27 (5) of the Police Act 1967 and an alternative charge under Section 143 of the Penal Code for taking part in an illegal assembly.

A drama started at the outset of the proceedings when three volunteer lawyers from the Bar Council discharged themselves after one of them had a fallout with Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) lawyer P. Uthayakumar.

Later, Abdul Ghani said the accused were all charged under non-bailable charges and that Judge Azimah Omar had to hear all arguments before using her discretion to allow them bail. Azimah agreed and adjourned the case to today and ordered the accused to be held in police custody. She said she would not use her discretionary powers to release the accused on bail without hearing to the arguments of both sides.

Prosecution and defence teams trade words during tense proceedings

  •  They were also charged with using criminal force on a policeman with intent to cause death.

  •  Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Patail himself led the prosecution team.

  • Seventeen lawyers appeared for the defence.

  •  Three volunteer lawyers from the Bar Council for the defence discharged themselves after one of them, Rajpal Singh, disagreed with Hindraf lawyer P. Uthayakumar’s racial slant.

  • Judge Azimah Omar told the defence lawyers not to be emotional.
  • 26 also charged with damaging seven vehicles

SHAH ALAM: In the strongest move yet against supporters of the Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf), 26 of them were yesterday charged with attempted murder.

This comes a week after they were charged with illegal assembly and rioting at the Selayang court. All the accused, between the ages of 18 and 45, were picked up by the police from their homes in the Klang Valley and Perak, as early as 2am yesterday. They were brought to the Shah Alam Sessions Court yesterday at 3.20pm in two police lorries. Out of the 26, 10 were also charged with illegal assembly.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail led the prosecution. Also in the team was the head of prosecution in the A-G's Chambers, Datuk Yusof Zainal Abiden. All 26 were jointly charged with using criminal force against a policeman, Dedi Abd Rani. They were also charged with causing disturbances by damaging seven vehicles — two Proton Wiras, Proton Waja, Kia Pregio, Perodua Rusa, Toyota Hiace and Rover Defender. Both offences took place in front of the Sri Subramaniam temple at Jalan Besar, Batu Caves, between 1am and 8am on Nov 25, 2007. The 26 were said to be part of an illegal assembly which was waiting to join up with other Hindraf supporters at a rally later in the day at Jalan Ampang.

For the charge of attempted murder, the accused face a maximum 20 years' jail with fine, while for charge of causing mischief, they face a jail sentence not more than five years and a fine if convicted. All claimed trial to the charges.

They were represented by a team of 17 lawyers led by G.K. Ganesan and M. Manoharan from the Bar Council. Manoharan also informed the court that none of the 26 accused was given food or drink when the police picked them up from their homes. There was also a shouting match during proceedings when Manoharan submitted the attendance of Abdul Gani may intimidate Sessions Court judge Azimah Omar who was hearing the case. Abdul Gani said the defence should not make this an issue and also not insinuate that race was an issue. Azimah assured Manoharan she was undaunted by Abdul Gani's presence and that she was only interested in seeing that justice was done. Abdul Gani objected to bail as the offence for attempted murder and causing mischief were non-bailable. Ganesan said the defence was not prepared to submit on the issue of bail and asked that the matter be heard today.  Manoharan pointed out that there were irregularities to the charges framed by the prosecution, but was unprepared to submit on the matter and asked for a postponement. Azimah allowed the matter to be heard today while the accused remain under detention.

Before proceedings ended, there was a tiff among the defence lawyers when P. Uthayakumar (legal adviser to Hindraf) told the court that the charges were malicious and that the Indian community was being persecuted while no such treatment was dished out to supporters of the coalition for clean and fair elections, known as Bersih. Supporters of Bersih held a rally on Nov 10 before presenting a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

At this juncture, lawyer Jaspal Singh, stood up and told the court that he did not agree with Uthayakumar's argument and he was discharging himself from this case. He alleged that Uthayakumar was causing more problems for all 26 accused. Jaspal left the court room followed by counsel Suraj Singh and Jaya Murugan. Outside court, a Light Strike Force team was on standby as there was a large crowd of family members and friends who were denied entry. No untoward incidents were reported.

    Bickering over language

    source

SHAH ALAM : Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail yesterday chided the 17 defence lawyers, charging that they were causing more problems for their clients by bringing up trivial issues.

Defence lead counsel M. Manoharan had earlier told the Sessions Court that Gani's presence was to intimidate judge Azimah Omar. Manoharan then made an issue of Abdul Gani's submission in English, arguing that as a government servant Abdul Gani should have used Bahasa Malaysia. Azimah waved away the objections .

At this juncture, one of the accused, M.K. Suman, 20, told the court that he had already been charged with illegal assembly — at the Selayang Sessions Court last week. Abdul Gani checked on it and apologised to the court for the mistake, but counsel P. Uthayakumar would not let him off the hook until he apologised to the accused. Azimah told him not to make an issue of it.

Abdul Gani then accused the defence of turning the proceedings into a racial issue. Then, during the bail application, counsel G.K. Ganesan said he was not prepared with submissions in Bahasa Malaysia as his submissions were in English. An exasperated Abdul Gani stood up and pointed out that earlier, the defence had wanted him to submit in Bahasa Malaysia and now Ganesan wanted to submit in English.
