We seem to have a case every year. Lucky that the statistic does not increase like our UPSR 7A achievers.

NIBONG TEBAL, Sun:

A 12-year-old girl is believed to have committed suicide at her home here yesterday over what she felt was a poor result obtained in this year’s Primary School Assessment Test (UPSR).

Subashini Sivakumar, a pupil of Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Ladang Sempah, is believed to have hanged herself with a blanket tied to the grille of a window at her house in Changkat, Sungai Jawi.

She was still breathing when found by her elder sister but died at the Seberang Jaya Hospital at 4.05am today, her father Sivakumar Govindasamy, 36, told reporters at the family home.

Subashini had expected to score at least four As in the examination but was disappointed with the four Bs, two Cs and a D she had obtained, he said.

“She was her usual self yesterday morning. She had breakfast, watched TV and played with her younger siblings,” Sivakumar said.

Subashini, the second of five children, was found hanged from the window grille at 1.40pm and as she was still breathing, she was rushed to the Sungai Bakap Hospital, said Sivakumar, who was at work then.

He said Subashini was crest-fallen after receiving her UPSR result on Nov 15 but he encouraged her to study harder.

“I did not scold her but said her results were good considering that she sat for seven subjects. I also promised to send her for Bahasa Malaysia tuition next year and present her with a ring for every A she gets in future.

“She seemed normal and happy after that. I cannot believe that she could hang herself,” he added.

Sivakumar also expressed disappointment with the delay in treatment at both hospitals, claiming that Subashini was left unattended until her condition worsened at 2am. — BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The MIC plans to create 5,000 Indian small businesses to create a pool of budding entrepreneurs who think big. MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said they wanted to instil the "think big" motto among the budding entrepreneurs.

"Who knows, some of them might even make it (to the Who's Who list) one day," he said in a statement. The Who's Who, published annually since 1849 by A&C Black, is the first biographical book of its kind and is among the world's most recognised and respected works of reference, with over 32,000 short biographies of living noteworthy and influential individuals from all walks of life.

Samy Vellu, who is also the Works Minister, said the MIC Economic Committee headed by Tan Sri Dr K.S. Nijhar had been tasked with organising the Business Development Seminar for Malaysian Indian Micro/Small Businesses on Dec 1. Themed Starting Small, Becoming Big, the one-day seminar is also jointly organised by the MIC's social arm, the Social Strategic Foundation (YSS), and National Entrepreneurship Institute.

Samy Vellu said there were many business loan programmes for micro and small businesses available from various banks. "The MIC's objective is to educate and provide adequate knowledge to micro and small businesses so that they are ready to tap into the programmes available," he said.

He said the party was aware that many Indian businesses were informal in nature with a majority of them not registered with the authorities and without any business plan. "In many cases, they don't even have basic accounting skills or current account. Many Indian microbusiness people don't have the know-how to apply for business loans," he said.

Samy Vellu said that while these small entrepreneurs survived in the market, their full potential was not realised nor were they maximising their income potential.

Those wishing to participate in the seminar can fax their registration forms to the organisers at 03-7960 5128 or contact the YSS office, 5th Floor, Menara Manickavasagam, Kuala Lumpur.

THE Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) marked the on-going festivals with a Food Donation Programme For The Poor, in the Petaling Utama Low Cost Flats recently. Speaking on behalf of the Residents Association was its secretary En Ismail Aziz. He said, "The residents consist of Malays, Indians and even some Chinese and any help is most welcome, and the celebrations will be enjoyed by everyone, in true Malaysian spirit".

More than 300 poor families around the Klang Valley, including the 25 families in Petaling Utama, benefited from the Food Donation Programme conducted by Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) in conjunction with Hari Raya and Deepavali celebrations. MHS pre-senting food parcels containing essential food groceries for various communities around the Klang Valley.

A more meaningful celebration: The recipients of the food donation programme pose with the MHS representatives.

The families that received the food parcels were those with monthly household income less than RM500. They also lived mainly in low cost housing areas and squatter colonies. The food parcels contained essential grocery items such as rice, canned foods, milk, etc. These food items donated were intended to supplement the supplies of these families during the festive celebrations.

According to MHS President, Datuk A.Vaithilingam, "this programme is another one in our on-going series of activities held throughout the year focussed on community development". He further added, "Hari Raya and Deepavali are major religious and cultural celebrations involving the Malay and Indian communities. And as we have always done in Malaysia, we tend to celebrate our festivals together, in the spirit of Muhibbah. Since both these festivals have come close to each other again this year, we have decided to run this annual programme for both communities again, as we did last year".

MHS also adopted the Petaling Utama Flats for its on-going Community Development Pro-gramme. The ATMAH Project team will soon start its tuition and human values classes there. En Ismail again thanked MHS for this effort, saying that "this effort and contribution will make a meaningful difference to the many young people who live in the area".

10,000 to petition Queen E for support
source

KUALA LUMPUR: About 10,000 people are expected to converge at the British High Commission on Nov 25 to petition the Queen of England to support a suit they filed recently.

The group will be led by the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF), which on Aug 30 filed a class-action suit against the British government for bringing Indians to Malaysia as indentured labourers and exploiting them for 150 years and thereafter failing to protect the minority Indians rights in the federal constitution when independence was granted. The sum sought was US$4 trillion (RM14 trillion) — or US$1 million for every Indian currently residing in Malaysia.

P. Waytha Moorthy, the lawyer who filed the suit, said HINDRAF was also seeking an unspecified sum in damages "for all the pain and suffering of generations of Indians in Malaysia over the years". "The cost of the suit is about RM5 million, as estimated by our British solicitors and barristers.

"Malaysian Indians are poor and cannot afford the cost, so we are appealing to the Queen to appoint her Queen's Counsel and solicitors to represent the minority Indians," said Waytha.

He said the suit was not a demonstration or a rally. "We just want to petition the Queen's help and we want the British to know that Indians here are supporting this suit."

The British High Commission said it was aware of the petition and would consider it. "However, Nov 25 is a Sunday and the commission will be closed. I don't know whom they will be giving the petition to," said its political and press affairs adviser Abdul Rashid Hussein.

HINDRAF representatives met Cheras police yesterday to apply for a permit to hold the gathering. The district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim, said police had not made a decision on the application. "We are studying the situation," he said.
