Here’s a link to Malaysiakini’s video, taken by Indrani Kopal. I quote their caution:

Below is a slideshow of the photos at the Serdang Hospital.

There’s some photos at YB Manikavasagam’s website as well.

Unverified sources said that Samy Vellu was busy answering calls regarding this death while he was at the SJKT Vallambrosa school. It seems that among the suspects who tortured the detainee was a Indian inspector. Not sure on how valid this information is.

Meanwhile, the family of deceased lodged a police report and denied saying that the deceased was an asthmatic patient.  Some representatives from DAP, PKR, MIC and Makkal Sakthi were present there as well offering their support. MK reported that about 80 people were present at the Seri Kembangan police station, venting their anger ath the police.

They held up banners with pictures of the deceased, showing the injuries he sustained while in police custody.

The banners read: “police are licensed killers”, “police are killing Indians” and “police are thirsty for Indian blood” in Malay and English. They also briefly chanted slogans.

Talking to reporters later, Kugan’s family members said that the deceased did not suffer from asthma and could not have died from breathing difficulties, as claimed by the police.

Makkal Sakthi asks Obama to close Kamunting

This is just a symbolic move by Makkal Sakthi. But what caught my attention was their tactic to just have four people gather to hold a banner, meaning there’s no need to apply for a police permit. Smart fellas.

And guess what,  there were 100 policemen there!!! How nice if these guys were deployed in crime infested areas in such short time. Sure can catch some criminals.

By the way, their rep in New York is also expected to pass a petition to Barack Obama

The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) has sought the help of US president-elect Barack Obama to close the Kamunting detention camp in Taiping, Perak.

Four Hindraf members made the plea in a press statement issued today, saying that the movement welcomes Obama’s decision to close the camp for suspected militants in Guantanamo Bay.

The four held up a banner outside the US Embassy in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, in a 15-minute demonstration this morning.

The assembled police force of about 100 personnel was surprised at the ‘small’ turnout. However, this was Hindraf’s bid to get around the restriction on gatherings of more than four people, which require a police permit.

In the statement signed by S Jayathas, Hindraf also congratulated Obama on his inauguration – scheduled for 1am tomorrow, Malaysian time.

Hindraf – banned by the government on Oct 15 last year – also said it counts on his support to help Indian Malaysians who “are being suppressed by the Umno-led government”.

R Shan, the movement’s representative in New York, is expected to hand over a petition to Obama in Washington today.

A similar petition will be submitted to Najib Abdul Razak when he becomes the prime minister of Malaysia in March.

Yup, you read it right. The Indian community are questioning why the Penang state government is not allocating any funds to the Penang Chinese Town Hall for the Chinese New Year celebration this year. This was the report in TV3 at 8.27pm just now! There were 3 or 4 interviews with some Indian fellas. The first guy (PIBG rep of some Tamil school) seemed to be reading from a paper.

Its good that our community is concerned about Chinese New Year. This is the spirit we should have – concern for other Malaysians.

Kampung Pandan Indian settlement eviction looms

While most of us are counting the hours to celebrate Ponggal, all’s not well with Kampung Pandan folks. Their relocation issue is still unsettled. The latest eviction notice by DBKL gave today as the deadline. Over time, many folks have left, but the remain families are sticking to their guns.

SOME 250 Indian families in the Kampung Pandan Indian settlement are worried that they would not be able to celebrate Ponggal (Harvest Festival) tomorrow as they have received final notices from the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) to vacate their houses by today, reported Malaysia Nanban.

The families had been living there for the past 70 years. In earlier letters to the residents, DBKL requested the residents to move into rental houses built by the city council in Bukit Jalil, Puchong.

The residents, in their counter offer, asked for houses in the Sri Alam, Sungai Besi area. DBKL rejected the request. The residents complained that the units in Bukit Jalil did not have the necessary facilities such as Tamil schools, temples and halls.

The residents are hoping that Federal Territories Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan would look into the problem and find an amicable solution.

After the folks supported PAS in the elections last year, the DBKL sent eviction notices in June, giving one month for the residents to move out. The temple was demolished earlier. The residents organised a protest.

Now, after 8 months, there’s still no progress. The offer to relocate them to Puchong is on the table. But Kg Pandan to Puchong is so far away. How do we expect the residents to manage the extra expenses? Kids go to school in nearby schools, most of the residents should be working around KL centre. Puchong to KL is a jam-packed road. Can’t rely on public transport. Need to wake up much more earlier. Need to change schools (BTW, the Tamil school will be relocated or wiped off the face of earth?) So much of hassle and expenses.

The residents were asking for low cost houses in the same spot, but I doubt it will be granted. The place is surely meant for some mega development by big players. Not for low-cost residents. Now, they want the alternative accomodation to be at Sg Besi (which is also a bit far) citing lack of facilities (no temple, hall, school) at Puchong. DBKL rejected the request.

The elected MP can only shout and support so much. In the end, the responsibility lies with the Ministry and DBKL.

Samy Vellu and previous BN MPs have tried before, but nothing much happened. What can Saravanan do now?

MIC Youth asks for resolution on Sri Lankan war

Two months ago, MIC Youth led a protest of BN coalition partners at the Sri Lankan embassy. Today, they upped the ante and demanded a similar resolution as the one against Israel to be passed against the Sri Lankan government.

Their advisor Vel Paari said they will submit a memorandum to PM Badawi to ask for tabling of a motion in the parliament. Question is how much support the coalition will give.

The Malaysian government should initiate the passing of a resolution requesting the United Nations to intercede immediately with the Sri Lankan government to stop Tamils being killed indiscriminately in its war with the Tamils in Sri Lanka, said MIC Youth advisor Vel Paari.

In a statement today, he said what is happening in Sri Lanka is similar to the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians.

“The Sri Lankan military is killing innocent Tamils. Untold number of children are the victims of their savage attacks. In these awful atmosphere of death and sorrow we request the Malaysian government to initiate a resolution to request the United Nations to intercede and stop such massacres and carnage.

“There should be immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka. Those affected by the savage attacks of the Sri Lankan forces need to be evacuated to safe-zones and be provided with necessary medical care and other assistance. The world body must ensure that the Sri Lankan government ceases all its military activities and peace be returned to the areas inhabited by the Tamils,” he said.

Many nations including Malaysia, said Vel Paari, have condemned Israel for its military actions in Palestine.

The same kind of savagery is being carried out in Sri Lanka and so nations, including Malaysia, should condemn Sri Lanka for its military actions, he added.

He said MIC Youth is meeting this week to discuss and prepare a memorandum for submission to the government.

The memorandum will be presented to Prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and copies will be submitted to all the component parties of Barisan Nasional.

“It is worthwhile to recall here that Umno Youth had requested the government recently to initiate a resolution in the Parliament to not only condemn Israel but also to request UN to initiate some form of action to stop the war and resume peace talks by the parties involved.

“We, on our part will urge Umno Youth to do the same in respect of the affairs of the Tamils in Sri Lanka,” he said.

“Those affected Tamils in Sri Lanka are the same as Tamils in Malaysia. In terms of race, religion, culture and language we have common links and heritage.

“We, Malaysian Indians have a moral responsibility to question the actions of the Sri Lanka government, and need be condemn its actions without any reservations,” he added.

Vel Paari also pointed out that BN component parties, apart from MIC, such as Gerakan and PPP, have many Indian members.

“So as component parties of BN, we have every right to request the Malaysian government to initiate such a resolution requesting the UN to intercede in the affairs of Sri Lanka and to stop innocent Tamils from being killed indiscriminately,” he said.
